Hornby Ground Observations That Aren't Eagle Related... 2012-2013

So, i am working in my garden, giving the Birds some space, but i have to keep walking past this youngster on my way to & fro, & they are still nearby, as given away by the calls.
Look at the bald patch under the chin as they lift their head to call.
Note the attempts at flight again in this video.

Oh, yipppeee, i heard calling nearby to the fledgling on the ground & spotted this second fledgling right over head of the first!



My last sighting of these lovely Birds who i enjoyed very much!
Hard to believe they all migrate south after this, even these youngsters.
Some showed up at the Wildlife Rescue place that beans works at.
i wish them well & i really hope they return next nesting season! ♥

Now here is what happened in the Barn Swallow Nest at the GasBar!

i didn*t know, but Barn Swallow Nests aren*t as common as they used to be on Hornby or Vancouver Island.
Not so many barns as there used to be, i guess.
So it was good to see this successful Nest.

If you ever get a chance, go to the Hornby Island Natural History Museum.
It is a wonderful place!
It is open more in the summer than in the winter, though it is open one day a week now.
In the summer, they have weekly talks about Nature.
This talk was about Whales!
& we had two very enthusiastic people telling us lots of interesting stuff.
They passed around some artifacts for us to look at up close.
This is an Orca tooth!

Thanks Booni, watching the Flycatchers from nest to fledge was fun. Barn Swallows pretty neat too, glad they have a safe place there. This whole topic is interesting, the museum sounds great, hope to check it out next time out that way.

August 22, 7:30 pm; the sun was setting.

We surprised each other near the Shingle Spit nest. Nose to nose, just about.

He was as curious as I was, so we had time for a good look at each other.
