Nest #32 - Ford Cove - 2011-2012 season
« on: November 09, 2011, 12:34:29 AM »
This thread is for stories and pictures about Nest #32.
This nest is on private land, a short distance to the southeast of the Ford Cove dock; but is visible from the beach.
The territory of this nest is near some of the best fishing grounds of the island.
This nest produced two healthy eaglets last summer, and two in the summer of 2010.

Click Here to see the chronicle of this nest from last season.

Here is winterwren*s map of the Hornby nests, so that you can see where it is.

Here is the second edition of my nest map.

This map sums up our observations of the nests of Hornby Island for the summer of 2011. The information was collected from direct observation by Booni and myself, and from conversations with the nests' neighbours.
Click on the map to see the larger size, and click again to explore details.

November 2, Ford Cove.
A pair of eagles perched behind the store: most likely the residents of Nest 32.

Monsieur on the left, Madame on the right. His feathers are ruffled by the south wind.

After a while they obligingly turn around.
Notice how Monsieur's primaries cross over his tail, and Madame's define a diamond shaper over hers. Remind you of someone?

Good fishing near a nest really makes a big difference, doesn't it?!

Thank you Wren! I miss this nest, as well as the others. I can't wait to get back. :)

i went down to Ford Cove to look for a Seal pup that had been spotted stranded a few days earlier.
i never found a Seal pup, but i DID find this Eagle on the tip of the breakwater at the Cove.
The dock was bobbing up & down in the wind, & there was a tied up boat drifting side to side in front of me, between me & the Eagle, making for challenging photography!
i had to time my shot just so.

While looking for the Seal pup, i found these interesting patterns in the sandstone at Ford Cove.

Oooo, I really like the last one. They are very interesting patterns. Gives me an idea. So does anyone know what creates these patterns?  :puzzled2

Beautiful sightings, Booni!  At first I thought those were mosaics created by an artist!  Very nice eagle image...  It must be fun to go out and find so many interesting things.  Thank you for sharing them!   :eclove

i got a call this morning that there was a HUGE Herring Spawn at Ford Cove.
So we went down there to have a look.
The water was the loveliest colour of milky blue.
i have never seen the spawn colour come right into the docks & boats like this.
Here is some video i took of the colour of the water.
The females lay their eggs on the seaweed then the males come along & depost their milt(sperm) into the water, causing the milky turquoise blue colouring.
