Observation post by wren in Nest #6 Savoie Farm topic - Last week I had a phone call from one of the neighbours of this nest.

She told me that there were dozens of eagles around, being very noisy, locking talons and whirling in mid-air and crashing into her rose bushes.  eek!

I was thinking that this might be because there was a dead seal or sea lion on the beach near the nest.

So last Friday, May 11, I went to have a look.

Right away I found Mom Savoie sitting on a branch beside the nest. The air was full of very strange sounds!
I started filming right away, before I even set up my tripod, because I was worried about missing those squeaky youngster sounds.
So in this video you get a shaky jumpy image of Mom Savoie by her nest, then the nest itself. Turn up the volume and listen to what I heard.

Observations continued by wren - Sure enough... There is a dead something on the beach; looks like a large seal.

Here you see 2 youngsters hanging out, one standing on the carcass, the other one to the side. Once in a while you can hear some of the other eagles carrying on in the background. Listen carefully around 30 seconds and again at 58 seconds into the video... Somebody is making a strange cross between a trill and the way Semi talks!

wren - May 11, 4:14 pm.

Somehow Dad Savoie has appeared beside Mom. Maybe he's been there all along, sitting on the nest, out of view? So now he's perched on the rim of the nest and his head is just visible in this video.

So, I've been there for 15 minutes and the place is full of eagles, but this is the first time Mom and Dad are alerting. There is an adult or sub-adult flying right near the nest.

Mom and Dad have been completely ignoring everyone else. The altercations I saw were all between visiting adults and sub-adults! The youngsters sound off a lot but they don't seem to be chasing each other too much; just a bit of posturing right by the dead seal. During the hour I spent there, Mom and Dad went on an obvious chase just once. The rest of the time they just watched from the nest or from their babysitting tree, sounding off only once in a while.

So in this video, you hear Mom Savoie's gull calls; the closest trills are Dad's. There is also another adult trilling in the distance, probably the one they're worried about.

If you turn up the volume, you also hear at least 2 youngsters in the distance.
At the very end of the video is a very strange sound, like the sound of some dogs fighting. That sound came from the edge of the water - quite far away, and it was loud enough to register well on the recording.
There were no dogs on the beach.
I'm thinking that the sound may have been from a pair of otters. They look cute but when they are fighting or mating, they sound fearsome!
At the same time as the growling snarling sound, you can hear that youngster who sounds a bit like Semi again.

wren recordeded an excellent example of a young Eagle making a *rusty hinge* trill.
Listen to the video at one minute in.
You can see the youngster make the call, then another youngster replies.

Thanks for recording this video Sparky!

As this video starts, Mum is flying into the Nest with a small fish in her foot.
She seems to be making *food coming in calls*, or maybe there is a visitor nearby, wanting her fish?

Here is some video i took at the Brigantine Nest.
Mum had been on the Nest, causing the two Eaglets to screep at her, then she flew to this water side perch Tree.
i don*t know if this type of calling is a type of alarm & at the same time communicating to the Eaglets.
