It had been a long day.
The night before, i*d gotten a call from Sea Breeze Lodge, near the Tralee Point Nest, that an Eagle had taken a mother Mink & left four crying youngsters.
The family had watched the youngsters for an hour & a half & then reported to the Lodge.
So i got a call.
i went with my Seal pup tub, ready to scoop up four baby Mink.
i talked to them at MARS first, as this was new to me.
Wasn*t even sure if they would take Mink, but they do.
Well, the family had scraped the rocks with arrows where they*d seen the young ones so we went down there thinking the four would be an easy scoop, but there was no sign of them.
i found the arrows, though, pointing into a crevice in the rock that was now filling up with the high tide.
Well, we never spotted the young o nes, so i called MARS when i got home.
She suggested setting a live trap with fish in it.
i thought they*d be on milk?
She said even so, they*d be attracted to the fish.
i was done in, so i called Aaron & he had fish & took my live trap down to the beach, yay!
He said he saw Mink that he thought were the young, but that they were quite large.
Next morning he checked & he had a Mink!
He thought the Mink was behaving kind of strangely calm.
MARS had said to pop them in a tub with a lid, so Aaron did this & the Mink just jumped out & ran away.
So i told him to set the trap again.
That night we went back but no sign of the Mink & no one was in the trap.
& a pair of Eagles was looking down on the beach.
We decided perhaps the Mink were big enough & maybe old enough to be on their own?
So we gave up.
When i got home, i had a call from Grassy Point saying there was a Seal pup down there.
Since i already had the tub in my van i drove down there.
He was saying how well the pup blended in with the shore, & i could not spot them til he pointed them out.
Ah, actually this was a Sea Lion, but a small one.
They were behaving strangely, sort of just lolling on the furthest point as the water came in.
It is not usual for a lone Sea Lion to haul out here as it is too close to people.
So, something was wrong.
i don*t think we even have Sea Lions here at this time of year.
They go to where there is more food.
i called DFO & the Vancouver Aquarium & reported & sent them fotos.

june 23 2020 18:44 - Sea Lion

The fella estimated 90lbs. & i estimated 4-5 feet, so, small for a Sea Lion.
Perhaps this one was born nearby this year & was not thriving somehow?
Something about the eyes looks wrong to me.

Here too.

The eye again.
Something looks wrong.
The tide was coming in & the Sea Lion went off into the water & was kind of lolling & rolling along & then slowly drifted over to the left.
So i went back home.

Two days later i was down at Grassy Point & noticed Turkey Vultures on the point.
i was pretty sure i knew what was out there.

june 25 2020 11:27 - Sea Lion

There was also a sub-adult Eagle with black tail tips & a much younger Eagle down there, attracted to the Sea Lion.

Not yesterday, but maybe the day before there were Turkey Vultures & extra Eagles around, disturbing Em & Mr. Em.
So, this Sea Lion explains why.

Something not too long and furry looked like was lifted at the back of the nest. .. Then we had TVs and eagles in the terrratory  disrupting Mr and Mr Em.. They may have been after tor attracted to the sealion

Five days later.
i find an Eaglet in the shade, which is good for them, but not so good for fotos.

june 30 2020 14:38 - Eaglet in the shade

i went back a bit later when the light was better.
We can tell this is Em because she*s been splooted all down her back with a poopshot!
She*s drowsy with the heat & with raising these Eaglets!

Hi Booni,

Thank you for the photos of the eaglets.  Have they been named yet?

I'm sorry about the sea otter though. Nature is sometimes hard to watch  :ecsad
