The Recycling Depot - 2018-2019 Season
« on: October 10, 2018, 07:29:16 PM »

In 2014, i decided to start a topic for the Hornby Island Recycling Depot.
This is a really cool place, with innovative recycling programs.
There is even a Free Store!
You bring items that are not garbage, that are still good to use, & you can take anything that grabs your fancy.
The Recycling Depot is a great resource for a lot of the local Artists.
There is an excellent composting program.
As much as possible is diverted from the waste bins.
There is also wildlife here!
i love the Ravens that hang around.
& there just may be an Eagle Nest nearby, as i have often heard Eagle calls from the Depot.

Whooo!
Haven*t posted about The Recycling Depot in four years.
It*s about time.
The composting program attracts LOTS of Ravens & Deer.
It has been a fantasy of mine for a long time to photograph them.
People drop off their compost, & the Ravens & Deer come in flocks to feast.
There are lots of people coming & going, so i figure i might be able to get nice & close to them.
But i never seem to have time!
Or, when i do, there are no Deer or Ravens around.
On this day, it was pouring rain & there was plenty of fresh composte & plenty of Deer & Ravens.
i slowly got as close as i could in my car & then parked & rolled the window down & waited for the Ravens to return.
i didn*t have to wait long.
One was just outside my window, on the cement wall, the other was further away on the dark compost pile.
Here*s the one that was pretty much right outside my window.
Standing on the cement wall.

This is the one who was farther away, on the big pile.

The rain was fabulous because it was making their feathers shine!
That is probably my rear view mirror, making the fuzz at the bottom of the foto.

With Ravens, it is hard to get the camera settings just right.
Plus it was dark & pouring rain.
So i am experimenting.

They are wary & curious about me.
i just sit still in my car.

Yesterday was lovely sunny & warm & i went to the Recycling Depot & was just leaving, as it was closing, when i spotted the Ravens again.
So i parked & rolled down the window & just watched them for a while with my camera.

Figuring out my camera settings in this first one.
It is a bit dark, & yet all the right areas have cool lighting!
& i love the background, too.

Yesterday we woke up to snow!
& it was COLD.
It was on my list to do my recycling at the Depot, but i wasn*t sure i*d make it.
The snow kept coming & that can be a bad road to try to get up the hill to get there.
But the snow eased so i braved it.
There were barely any people there except the ones working that day.
But there were TONS of shiny Ravens.
i was sure i saw one playing in the snow as i was leaving so i pulled over & stopped & took these two videos.

Okay, that was a nice bonus catching the Raven playing & bathing in the snow at The Recycling Depot, however, my real reason for getting out my camera was that there were Eagles there!  :eceek
i had heard from a fella who works there that there*d been Eagles at The Depot.
i believe this has happened before, but not as much as now.
MARS posted that the Eagles have returned hungry this year.
When i arrived, i saw two Eagles with white heads & one brown youngster flying off into the Trees.
There were also tons of shiny huge Ravens, but this is not unusual.
There is a composting program there, & the Ravens & Deer find lots to eat.
But i have never seen Eagles!
i counted at least five.
Once i got out my camera, this was the Eagle i focused on.
At the Recycling Depot, almost everything is taken for re-use & recycle.
But for Absolute Garbage, there is the dumpster.
They are big containers, & the lids are closed when The Depot isn*t open.
The dumpsters, there are two of them & one is closed, are to the Eagle*s left.

When they are young adults, like this one, their yellow eyes have a blue-white tinge to them, like these ones have.

A magnificent Eagle, with an empty crop.

This one has a bit of a freckle on the beak under the eye.

Fortunately for me, photographing, very few people braved The Depot that day, due to the snow.
But finally someone pulled up to the dumpster, & the Eagle flew off after this last foto.

So i did my recycling & my perusal of the goodies in The Free Store, & then i got another chance to photograph.
There was a flurry of activity in the dumpster, Raves in & out, & Eagles right in there as well.
i photographed this Eagle without realizing what they had in their foot!  :eceek
Word was, one of the restaurants had dumped their food waste that day.
The yellow fence bars you from falling or driving into the dumpsters.

That Eagle flew off, so i started to leave when the Ravens in the snow caught my eye.
