Little Tribune Bay Nest - 2018 Season
« on: January 03, 2018, 07:04:46 PM »

Little Tribune Bay is a lovely spot!
A sandy beach with rocky shores on either side, a big River that comes pouring down through the beach when the rains get going in the fall & winter, & fronted by lovely grassy farm fields that sometimes have Cows grazing, & usually have Canada Geese as well.
The beach is clothing optional!
In spite of the people action in this territory, there is an Eagle Nest here.
There are very few large Trees down there, so the Nest Tree is relatively easy to spot.
i*m not sure if the pair here had Eaglets last year.
You can read last season*s topic, & there are links to all the previous seasons here.

It was a lovely sunny day so we went for a walk along Little Trib!
The lighting was perfect for photographing the Ducks that had blended in with the rocks when we first arrived.

Look at the floating bubbles behind the male in this one!

It took just the right timing to catch them with their heads above water.

I betcha the 'clothing optional' doesnt get much excercise at this time of year.  :eceek :eclol
There is something special about the way  photographs appear so crisp and clear on a cold and sunny winter day.  The colours also  seem much crisper.  :nod2  That blue drop is incredible!  :ty

Yesterday it was cold so we went seeking the Sun & a bit of warmth at Little Tribune Bay for our walk.
We were sitting on a log in the Sun & i was trying to photograph American Wigeons & Black Oystercatchers in the lovely light when i spotted a strange Bird flying over head.
i think they were a Peregrine Falcon!
Flying north over High Salal then disappearing.
There was a sighting with a foto recently near the ferry i believe.

Seeking Sun & warmth we went for a walk on Little Tribune Bay.
There were Black Oystercatchers!
This one only had one leg!

Kidding, of course, the other is tucked up against their belly, resting & warming.
You can see it in this foto.

Action shot!
One is stepping & the lower one is stretching both wings.

Love these Ducks, they never are still & it is hard to get their heads above the water.

We were leaving, but the Black Oystercatchers landed very close to us!

This pair was noticeably cozy when we walked the beach in the Sun on this day.
There was also a pair to the right of them in the corner of the Bay that landed together calling & displaying.

Little side trip to check on these eagles today.

A first distraction, down the path through the forest. A Swainson's thrush making its whistle calls... And perched right by the path.

Where the trees open up, there seems to be no evidence of any nest in either of the recently used trees.
Down to the beach for a better view... An adult eagle flies in from the shore and circles the area. I'm trying to figure out where he disappeared to, when I see movement out of the corner of my eye.
Some animal carrying a fish!

Ducks under a pile of rocks about 10 metres away.
Parks the fish in a safe place and peeks out to figure out what I am.
It's a mutual inquiry.

A mink!
Soaking wet. Must have just caught that fish. The tide is wayyy out, why take such a long trek in the open? Feeding babies in a den maybe?

We play hide and seek for a while.

Then after several peeks between the rocks, the mink decides that the two-legged animal with the big eye is not such a threat and comes out carrying that fish again!

And the fish is a Midshipman...
