Nest 21 - Whaling Station Bay - 2017-2018 season
« on: December 30, 2017, 10:41:16 AM »

This is where we*ll post observations, fotos, videos & discussion of the Nest #21 territory.
This Nest is in a one of a kind spot, overlooking a huge marsh, & has a very interesting territory that includes Cape Gurney & lovely dry earth flora that is quite different from other areas of Hornby.
Lots of Pine Trees grow here, & Arbutus, which like the drier zones.
It is a lovely place to walk around.
There are some very interesting houses in this neighbourhood.
These Eagles have a HUGE shore territory.
It includes the east arm of Whaling Station, Cape Gurney, & the shore towards Helliwell to where the Helliwell pair Nest.
i think wren spots lots of interesting shore/water Birds at Cape Gurney, & once she even spotted a Humpback Whale!
i have a friend who lives on the Marsh, & she sees Eagles bathing there, that might be this pair, or could be the Helliwell pair.
In the time leading up to & during Herring Spawn season, Eagles dot every Tree in this neighbourhood.

We had gone for a lovely walk on Whaling Station.
The Sun was out, but at the high tide line where we walked, we were in shade.
There were lovely Ducks & shore Birds at the water line, which was a good ways away, so we stayed up high to give them space.
Collected a FULL grocery bag of plastic!
That feels good.
Afterwards it was still sunny so we drove around Whaling Station to see if we could see any Eagles.
We spotted the Nest #21 pair in one of their usual perch Trees!
i*d say this first one is the male, lower down in the Tree.

Thank you for showing us this part of Hornby and the eagles who live in that area, booni.

Got a couple of excited e-mails from a neighbour of this Nest today!

Am up on Hornby until Wednesday next week.  Went to check the old nest tree to see if they were rebuilding, nothing in the big ďYĒ where it was, just about to leave when I see wings flapping and it appears they are rebuilding but higher up on the left hand side as you view it from the veggie garden.  Going back out with binoculars.

Sorry, was so eager to report, but although they are definitely in the tree, I canít see a nest, without binoculars It looked like one but now I see it is just branches.  There was one eagle lower down and the one I saw flapping higher up on the left.  Now I just see the one lower down.

i had an excited encounter at Jackie Hildering*s talk last night & this morning i found this message in my e-mail!

This time I got the binoculars first!  They have rebuilt the nest in the same tree.  It looks a bit flimsy, but a white head is sitting on the right hand branch above the nest.
I kept hearing them when I arrived on Wednesday but only got out to check this morning.  Such good news.

This Nest had completely collapsed, & they have built it up again already in just a few weeks.

Hind view of the rebuilt nest.
Reminds me of what to look for: not always green twigs visible, but the bright broken ends of the wood, even dead branches, contrasts with the grey sides. This golden orangey colour only shows for so long; it fades after some months exposed to the weather.

March 19, 3 pm

I heard 2 different adult eagle nearby. I couldn't see any sign of someone on the nest yet, but from that side it's hard to tell... We'll see.

Another report from the neighbour of this Nest!
From the distance where she takes these fotos, you can really see the Nest growing in these three fotos she has sent so far.

Just back on the island and went to check, they have really built it up now and I saw both of them landing in the nest while walking the trail under the tree.  Thought Iíd send this in case you havenít had time to come and check.
