Olsen Farm Nest - 2017-2018 season
« on: October 20, 2017, 08:00:15 PM »

This topic is about the Olsen Farm nest and its neighbourhood.
There are actually two nests on the farm; the other one we still call the Heron Rocks nest because that's where most of its territory is. See the Heron Rocks topic for more information.

Here's what Booni wrote about this nest last year:

This is a fabulous nesting territory.
A beautiful grassy huge farm field on a long stretch of exquisite shoreline.
You gotta walk a long way over a bouldery beach to get to this Nest.
i have only seen the Nest area from above, on the road, or from the water & one time in a few quick views from someone*s video they took while paragliding!
Last year*s [2016] topic, & links to previous years,
plus that cool video can be can be found here.

This summer (2017) the nest produced one healthy eaglet.

Today I saw my first immature eagle of the season!
I often stop at the top of Ford Cove hill on my way home from work.

This time I glimpsed a Northern Harrier coursing between the huge maples at the top edge of the field!
Out came my camera... Maybe that Harrier would come back?
This bird came in instead!

He didn't stay long... Flew off in the same direction he's come from.

Immature eagle. I can't decide if it is in its third or fourth year.

So far this season, I had only seen adult eagles; this is my first sighting of a younger one.

Yesterday i had to do a run down to Ford Cove.
My eyes are always drawn to the Olsen Farm fields, who might be there today?
i saw that there were small lakes/rivers in the field, & it looked like one Eagle was standing in there, while a youngster was perched in a Tree nearby.
There were also LOTS of Canada Geese, in another area, & a huge flock of Starlings reeling around in a large cloud.
On my way back, going up the steep hill, there was no one behind me so i slowed right down & had a look.
Now there were a good few Eagles standing in the water!
So i pulled over into my good spot & stopped & rolled the passenger window down.
i know if i get out of the car they will all fly away, so i have to clamber into the passenger seat & photograph out the window.
i take this first test video.

Seeing that youngster lands decides it for me.
i sit there properly & comfortably & get out my monopod to steady my camera & just enjoy the goings on as i film.
Time goes by & pretty soon i have a twenty minute video!
i*m surprised YouTube let me upload the whole thing.
Here it is!
i could watch this all day, obviously.

i tend to do a video now, because it seems to come out much clearer, & closer too!
But here are some fotos i took for the heck of it, too.
LOVE the reflection of the youngster in the water.

Today when i went by, there was an adult standing there.
On my way back, three adults, & one youngster perched nearby.
i shoulda stopped...

One by one, they all started to leave.
Not sure why.

i*m giving away my secret spot here.
If i were a REAL photographer, i would set myself up in a blind six feet from that little strip of water you can just see to the right of the mirror.
That is where the Eagles were.

Was driving up the hill past Olsen Farm, looking at the Birds in the field & the Eagles standing in the water again, when i could swear i saw a white Bird in with all the usual Canada Geese in the field!
Almost looked like some kind of Gull, but no, a Goose.
i think this might be a juvenile Snow Goose, which is pretty rare for here i think.

Olsen Farm Nest tree seen from nearer the Heron Rocks nest...
Two adult eagles at the top, a wet youngster drying wings just below nest level.

Louis Jobidon, our Humpback & Orca kayak photographer posted fotos of a Herring Spawn at Ford Cove & Heron Rocks!
The next day i went to check it out but didn*t see anything at Ford Cove.
Going back up the hill past Olsen Farm i could see the familiar gorgeous blue milky water there.

Twice I tried checking this nest from the road above. Last year I was able to see the head of an eagle during incubation time. Now with adjacent trees growing I have lost that view.

My first check was about 3 weeks ago and at that time I could see two adult eagles perched off the nest.
Yesterday I finally found a vantage point that showed me a good expanse of nest bowl, with finer grasses visible. Empty. So it's probable that these eagles are taking a break this year.

I had a distant but clear view of this nest when I last visited the Heron Rocks territory... July 4. It looked completely empty and I saw no signs of eaglets - white poopshots or bits of down clinging to the branches.

This confirms what I observed earlier, seems like these eagles are taking a break this year.
