Nest 25 - Seawright - 2017 season
« on: April 08, 2017, 07:56:57 AM »

Nest #25 is on private property, in a rather short Tree, or maybe it is just that the Nest isn*t that high up from the ground rather than the Tree being short.
From the beach, the Nest & Tree are plenty high.
The Tree is on a high bank, overlooking rock shelf beaches that go out a long way at low tide.
The bank the Nest is on is on the shore of Little Tribune Bay, & you can see Tribune Bay, the other side of the bay where High Salal housing group is, & you can also see Helliwell Provincial Park & Lasqueti Island with her Sisters Lighthouse that we also see from the cam.
In other words, this is a fabulous spot for a Nest.
There are so many other Nests in this area, but it is a very large area.

i believe the previous year, wren discovered at least one Eaglet in this territory?
She gets lots of good observations & fotos from the water!
Last year, there were two Eaglets at this Nest!
Read last season*s observations, & see all wren*s great fotos, plus find links to past seasons here.
wooohoooo!

i got a call a few days ago that there were BIG BIRDS hanging out near this nesting territory.
Later on this day, the weather co-operated & we had a beautiful sunny evening to go check this out!
Sure enough, LOTS of big Birds.
& they kept changing, one flying away & another arriving.
i believe there is a dead Sea Lion on the beach below the bank, but we never got our eyes on this.
There are always dead Seals & Sea Lions after the Herring fishery here.
What a treasure trove.
Portrait time!
This first one, four turning five right now?

Lovely sweetie.  :hearts2
Just finishing their first year of life & survived to tell the tale!
i LOVE the tail & back feathering!

Same individual.
Look at the back feathering here!
Lovely brown eyes & dark beak still.
(Darn, these fotos are squishing again. Click on the foto to see it properly.)

& then this tiny one catches our attention, buzzing away in the sunshine, perched on a Maple Tree bud, showing you how small he is.
He was chasing another small Bird away.
Look how grouchy he looks!
Looks like pollen on the tip of his beak.
Even his head feathers look cranky.

Another beauty hanging out around the carcass on the beach.
The pair seemed to be incubating, female on the Nest, male flying all over & alerting due to all the scavenging visitors.
Poor nesting adults, run ragged.

July 8... A little jaunt down the beach to this territory. This eaglet was audible from the beach access, by the Little Tribune nest.

11:39 am

The sounds get louder... And sure enough here's an eagle carrying something... I have my lens focused on the branched eaglet... and the eagle lands to the left! Into the nest.

Into which the branched eaglet does not follow.
And from which now comes another set of sounds... As the adult eagle bolts back out. Two seconds and it's done.

There's a second eaglet in the nest!
There! Now visible above the rim.
11:43

Here's the huge nest tree, on a small bluff above the beach. On the left is the nest, almost all hidden by live branches; on the right is the branched eaglet, quite far away. Still complaining...
11:45

Another view of the branched eaglet.

Just as I made my way back down the beach, there was another food drop! Happened really fast once again. Lightning drop into the nest, branched eaglet kicked a fuss but did not leave his or her perch.

I just had time to catch a blurry shot of the eagle carrying a fish. Click on the picture to see it better.
