Nest Tribune Bay Tennis Court - 2016-2017 season
« on: November 25, 2016, 10:21:42 AM »

This Nest is in the tallest Tree in the area, at the top of a small hill, overlooking the Tribune Bay tennis court & Tribune Bay beyond, with the cliffs of High Salal off to the left.
It is on the grounds of an Outdoor Education Center, where lots of kids go & have fun.
In the summer, the beach is packed with people, & the Bay with boats.
There is a huge grassy field, all along the beach, from to the left of this Nest, all the way to the right of Tribune Bay.
It is a fabulous location, though i do worry & wonder how the Eagle pair manage to feed their youngsters when there are always so many people present during their nesting season.
Last year the Eagle pair sure seemed to have at least one hatchling on the Nest, but we never got complete season observations after the last post, unfortunately.

Last year*s topic, & links to previous years can be found here.

We have had SO MUCH rain & wind & dark days since september!
So when the Sun breaks through & you can see blue sky again, it is a real treat.
After it had rained all night & all morning, it was a treat to see the Sun come out two days ago, just in time for us to go for a walk to Tribune Bay.
We walked through the woods & sat on the lovely bench that is right under the Nest Tree, looking down over the Bay & towards the cliffs of High Salal & lovely Tribune Bay with Scoters in the waves in the sunshine.
Twice we have been here & the female Eagle has flown in & landed, calling, in the Nest Tree.
Shortly after, the male joins her there, also calling.
There was also a  youngster flew past one day & disappeared in the Trees of the cliff.
On this lovely day, my eye was caught by an Eagle flying overhead away from the Nest Tree.
They had wet wide grasses in their feet, under their tail & trailing behind them!
The Eagle then circled back & landed in the Nest & began arranging their delivery.
We were so close we could hear the thwack of feathers landing, then the rustling in the Nest, then the adult took off again.

We were out walking on Tribune Bay to take advantage of this rare sunny day when i spotted this Gull picking at & picking up something from the beach.
i thought the foto would only be good enough for maybe identifying what the Gull had, but they didn*t turn out so bad!
i*m not sure if the Fish was alive or not.
Looks like they may have been.
i had assumed it was just a piece of carrion of some sort, til i saw the fotos properly.

Not sure what the battle was about, unless the Fish WAS alive, but then the Gull managed to swallow the Fish whole after this foto.

This Tree is across the road from the area where the Tribune Bay Tennis Court Nest is.
This territory might also be Lunar Rock?
So i am just popping this sighting in here.

How would one do the Hymleck (sp?) manoeuvre on a gull?

How would one do the Hymleck (sp?) manoeuvre on a gull?

I'd try pressing just below the chest area using three fast upward thrusts. I've done the Heimlich on several people and it works.  When you do it, the diaphragm forces air out of the lungs and the item pops out like a cork in a bottle of champagne.

The objects that caused the problem when I helped the people varied...meat, a jelly bean, and a piece of chocolate.  Each time the person was talking while eating.

It would be best to see a demo or look at diagrams and an explanation before an emergency occurs.  Usually the procedure is done standing behind the person who is choking but it can be done if the person is on their back on the floor.

There is  a modified version for babies.

We went for a walk along Tribune Bay on the grass at high tide.
We sat for a bit watching the water & the clouds & the Scoters.
When we got up to leave i just happened to look up & there were these two RIGHT THERE only feet above our heads!
SCORE!!!!
i am not at all sure who is who here, & look at the Eagle on the right with that dark crescent behind their eye, in other words a just turned adult!
So perhaps one or the other or both of this pair has changed to someone new?

The rest of this is just a portrait session.
These fotos are full frame, no cropping, that is how close they were to us.

Nice big fluffy down feather coming out of the Eagle on the left.
