Nest 36 - Strachan Valley - 2015- 2016 season
« on: December 28, 2015, 10:01:11 PM »
This thread is for discussion and photos of Nest #36 and its territory.

Nest #36 has the distinction of being the furthest inland of all the nests of Hornby Island. It is probably the only one without an ocean view.

On this map of the eagles' nests of Hornby, Nest #36 is toward the bottom, well inland.

This nest is in deep forest. The neighbours can see the adults come and go, and they can hear the eaglets, but the eaglets are out of sight until they start branching.
We have very little information on this nest, so it has not been represented in a forum topic every year.

The postings for the 2013-2014 season start here.
I believe last year this nest produced one eaglet, but I have to recheck with the neigbours because I forgot to write it down!   :couch2

I went to visit one of the farms in Strachan Valley because the people there get to see a pair of Common Snipes at every Christmas Bird Count. The snipes like one of their fields that gets partially flooded in the winter. I have never seen a snipe... So with the owners' permission I went on - yes - a snipe hunt.

That's what it turned into indeed. My mystery birds were nowhere to be found.
But, as on any self-respecting snipe hunt, there are plenty of other things to see, if one cares to look.

On a little pond I found this lovely Bufflehead, a female or a youngster.

And from one of the fields I noticed this tall tree, a lone old-growth tree standing proud in a much younger forest.
There looks to be a pile of branches in the middle of it, on the far side of the trunk.
The eagle nest tree?

It sure looks like an eagles nest to my unprofessional eye. Maybe a new pin on your map this year  :eclove

Not a new pin, just a confirmation of a previously approximate location... :)

On our weekly hike we often go past what used to be Beaver Lake.
There are no Beavers there now, but there are still marshy areas & ponds.
One week we were passing by & heard the strangest calling coming from the bullrushes!
We never spotted the Bird, but you sure could hear them.
i made two video recordings of their calls & it was identified as a Marsh Wren.

On our last hike, we were actually able to spot one of these Birds!
i only got one foto & i am thrilled with it!

Omg, you found one!  :heart

I had been told that Marsh Wrens do live on our island and had been looking out for them, but always in vain.

Beautiful photo!

We were hiking near this nesting territory, & i had my ears open for Eagle & Eaglet sounds, but nothing to report.
We DID spot these youngsters, however.

On august 4, the neighbour of this Nest told me that the day before she heard one Eaglet & from her description, she is not seeing them so they must still be on the Nest.
She said when they start flapping around in the Tree is when she sees them.

Today this same neighbour tells me she is now seeing the Eaglet which means branching has occurred!
She is still reporting only one Eaglet.
