Little Tribune Bay Nest - 2015-2016 Season
« on: October 19, 2015, 08:45:48 AM »

Little Tribune Bay is a lovely spot!
A sandy beach with rocky shores at either end, a big River that comes pouring down through the beach when the rains get going, & fronted by lovely grassy farm fields that sometimes have Cows grazing, & usually have Canada Geese grazing.
& the beach is clothing optional!
In spite of the action in this territory, there is an Eagle Nest here.
There are very few large Trees down there, so the Nest Tree is relatively easy to spot.
Last year wren discovered that these Eagles changed nesting Trees, & there was at least one Eaglet.
You can read last season*s topic, & there are links to all the previous seasons here.

We went for a walk on this lovely day at Little Tribune Bay.
It is a nice flat sandy walk, & once the rain really comes, there is a River to cross to get to the long beach.
Right now it is dry & easy to cross.
These Eagles were in the corner of the Bay opposite to where we went for a walk.
There was lots of calling & flying off & landing again.
Not sure why.
Could hear calls from Nest #25 & Dunlop Nest too.
i*m still mixed up about which Tree is the Nest Tree now.
This was the smaller of the two Trees, i believe.

i sat for a while & tried to capture fotos of a small flock of Surf Scoters on this lovely warm, calm water day.
i would just find them, start to focus, then one by one they would dive under water & all disappear.
Then i would count to ten & wonder where they would surface, they would all pop up again, one at a time, then i would try to catch them all over again.
i wasn*t that thrilled with the fotos i got, but what the heck, they are such darn cool Birds.

Lovely female far left.
Look at her eye vs. all the males.
How do they even SEE out of that eye!

Now, what rescued these fotos for me was, look at what is in the bill of the male at the top of the foto!

& here*s a female with the same thing!
A gigantic Clam, i believe!, with the foot thingy sticking out!
They swallow these things WHOLE???

those Surf Scoter photos are amazing!  Thanks, Booni.  The male Scoter bill is grotesque!  Do they really swallow those clams whole?  And what happens to the shell?  Surely they couldn't digest the shells!

Today i was in a grassy field uphill from Little Tribune Bay when i noticed a small Duck walking along a fenceline there.
i thought maybe one of the neighbours* pet Ducks, but i could see pretty quickly that this was a wild Duck.
They were waddling along & falling over, looking tired.
i ran to get a towel.
Tired as she was, i had to run after her quite a while before i could capture her in my towel.
Then she went limp.
i wasn*t sure if the towel alone was enough, so i went in the house & looked for a container.
The best option was a fridge drawer.
i put her in the towel in the drawer then called MARS.
They said they have been getting starving Buffleheads in, & could i palpate the keel?
i did, & to me the breast area seemed full & round.
MARS said good idea to get the duck in anyway, so we loaded in the car & went home to get a proper kennel.
i took these assessment fotos of her in my house before i transferred her into a proper kennel.
You can see her size, compared to a fridge drawer.
This is a small Duck.
She was done in, resting her bill on the wall of the drawer.
Here feet were gorgeous, lovely orange & black & look at the eye!
She didn*t like being transferred & went from the calm she was in the fridge drawer, to trying to escape the kennel.
So i quickly closed the lid & put a towel over the kennel to relax her.
Then down to the ferry we went to look for a ride.
i was aiming for the 4pm ferry & i was really early.
Not one vehicle was in the lineup.
Then a truck arrived & i went running up to ask him.
At first people act like i*m an escaped mental patient, i am used to that, then as i yabber away explaining what is going on, they come around.
This guy was on it!
He was going to meet MARS in a parking lot in Courtenay!
The Duck would get care.

i called MARS yesterday to get an update on the Goldeneye!
Wings were fine, there was something on one of her feet, but not abrasions from being on land, & she was very under weight, just like the three Buffleheads they have in care.
All four were being picked up by Norm in his helicopter & taken to Wildlife Rescue Association in Burnaby, BC.
They have the water pools necessary for these types of Birds, who need to be in water, not on land, lying on their keel/breast.

i also got a phone message from my knight in shining armour who was so happy to take the Duck to Courtenay to meet MARS.
He had a schedule & was a bit worried about whether they would be there to meet him, but he pulled in when he said he would & there they were waiting for him!
He said what great people, & made a donation to MARS! :heart

I was told there was a sea lion carcass at Little Tribune Bay, and that lots of eagles were feasting on it.

I waited two days for decent weather before making it over, and there were so many humans taking advantage of that rare sunshine, all the eagles had fled. The carcass was right by the creek and showed mostly bones.

Inland a little way I found this lone eagle on a tree.
