Nest #9 West Carmichael - 2015 - 2016 Season
« on: October 01, 2015, 10:52:21 AM »

This is where we will post observations, videos, & fotos of the Nest #9 Eagle territory.
This territory is right next to Mum & Dad Hornby*s, to the left as we look out the webcam.
This Nest is hard to view, it is in a huge, beautiful old Fir Tree, so the Eagles are more often spotted in their perch Trees in their neighbourhood.

The 2014-2015 topic for this territory can be found here.

2013-2014*s topic, a highly-detailed map of Hornby with all the Nests marked on it made by wren, & links to previous seasons in this territory may be found here.

There is this weed that grows on my driveway that an admired gardener told me was a real pest, so i have always worked on pulling it out.
This year, i just didn*t, & now i am glad, because perhaps it is one of the native species to this area that benefits the local Birds!
i spotted this carpet of moving Birds on a rainy dull day, all feeding on this plant.
i knew the Oregon Juncos, both male & female, but was trying to figure out what the Sparrow-like Birds were, with those hints of lovely yellow on them!

Looking through my Bird book, i believe these might be Immature Golden-crowned Sparrows visiting my yard!
i have no idea what the little plant is, however.
These fotos are all through a window.

Wonderful message about the non-native plant and the feasting birds.

Hugs Booni!

This Eagle was perched on the Niner*s perch Tree on the water, the one we used to be able to see from the cam, that the top broke off of.
They seem interested in something in Mum & Dad Hornby*s territory.

love the video! We kill and cut more native species each year, starving the fauna that depends on it. I dont think we have Golden-crowned Sparrows very nice.. I hope niners arent looking to expand their terrritory  :really

Last evening, Eagles in the Niner territory were screeching so loud i could hear them from inside the house!
This continued for about two hours, & i heard the same kind of calls this morning as well.

This morning, again, from 9:00 to 9:30, there were those screeching upset calls, one time right over my house!
i looked out at the Tree across the road from me, & TWO Eagles were perched in the top.
Then one & the other flew, screeching again, towards the Nest Tree area.

Yesterday i was at Grassy Point & there had been an Eagle in The His & Hers Tree for a little while, but as soon as i started to focus my camera in their direction, they flew off & i missed the flyoff so was searching for the Eagle for nothing.
It seemed the Eagle had flown towards the Niners* territory, & there were those upset calls for at least 15 minutes, coming from their water side perch Tree area.
i finally spotted one, from a distance.
Not sure what is going on over there, but there sure have been some upset calls these past few days.
wren reported hearing some too.

i think there had been two Eagles here, but i missed all the action, only hearing it.

So i went out with my camera to investigate.
The stuff hanging down is kinda like foam.

The lovely neighbourhood Raven pair were perched on their usual spot in the Tree across the road from me in lovely setting sun light.
i think the one with the white bib is the male? the larger of the two?
Look how lovely & glossy their feathers are!

He hopped up into the branches to our left, while the female had a good scratch!
i LOVE seeing the sole of the foot like this!

Here*s the male, blinking his nictitating membrane!

The female, still on the perch branch.

The male, above & to the left a bit, in the branches.

The female flew off from the perch branch, & here is the male still in the branches & they are calling back & forth.
She has gone over towards the Niner Nest area, which they seem to share with the Eagles.

Paddling from Collishaw Point back towards Grassy Point, I crossed this territory.
As I approached i could see a whole lot of seabirds around the corner.
They were Mergansers for sure. Those birds are usually so shy... But they were busy fishing, and it soon became obvious that they were coming my way. So I just drifted, waiting for them, with my camera ready.

October 23, 5:15 pm

Red-breasted Mergansers. They seem to arrive later than the Common Mergansers. These may well be the same flock that Booni saw here.

I didn't see any males in white plumage either. The skinny, orangeish bill and the crazy hairdo are pretty good identifiers, though, once you get close enough.
They kept coming my way!
The water was full of little fishes and the mergansers seemed oblivious... Lucky me.

Meanwhile I'm drifting, drifting... The rocks get closer, closer... with a little swell crashing on them...
No choice now, I have to grab my paddle and move out of there and suddenly they realise what I am and they all fly away. Sorry, lovely birds! Thanks for coming over!

Meanwhile there has been an eagle pair perched above that little rocky point, in what seems to be a favourite fishing perch.

I get a few quick photos and then paddle away so the mergansers can return to their supper.

This is probably the Niner Pair.
