This territory is about five territories to the right of Mum & Dad Hornby*s webcammed Nest, also on the North side of the Island.
There seems to be one pair that uses more than one Nest in the territory.
Last year they perched on the Belcarra Nest Tree, but did not use it for eggs.
They may have built up one of their inland Nests, but they didn*t produce any fledglings last year.
They have a nice stretch of waterfront, & a good few perch Trees.
To read about last season in this territory, to find the links to previous seasons & to see the fabulous map wren has put together marking all the Hornby Nests that we are aware of, click here.

A week ago, the neighbours of the Nest reported that one Eagle had come back ten days ago, then two were around a few days later.
Today, walking in the neighbourhood was eerily quiet.
Then my ear picked up the sound of trilling nearby!
On one of our walks, i definitely heard two separate trills, so two Eagles around.
In a Tree near the Nest, i spotted this Eagle.

Here is the back of that same Eagle.

Later in the day, it is getting dark, when a bit of sun hits the Tree tops & i manage to catch this same Eagle again, still in the same perch Tree, only facing the other direction now.
i really like the lighting, so i didn*t try to fix it at all.

The old Belcarra Nest Tree has lost it*s beautiful top with all the perch branches!
Supposedly this happened two nights ago, so monday night sometime.
This is about thirty feet of Treetop, & it is lying across the road about thirty feet from the base of the Tree!

This is what the Treetop used to look like.
The Eagle to the right is perched on the one dead perch branch that is left, while everything to the left of them is  now gone!

Both Eagles are perched on the branch that remains, in this old foto.
Everything to the left of them is gone now!
It doesn*t look like much, but wait til you see the pile on the road now!

Here*s what the pile across the street from the Tree looks like.
Good thing all this fell here & not on the house which is in the other direction!

october 29 2014 10:58 - old Belcarra Nest Tree top

This foto shows you the girth of the piece that broke off!
& this chunk is quite long, too.
A lot of good green stuff came down with the dead top.
You can see where the red open stub matches the top of the Tree where it broke off.

The old top, later in the day.

The top of the Tree now, later in the day.
There is a Flicker in there, feasting on bugs!

A closeup of the remaining top & the Flicker.
You can see that it is quite rotten inside there.

It was a lovely day, & where i was spending it, there seemed to be lots of visitor Eagle activity!
This young Eagle was perched here for hours.

Hopefully later today i*ll post fotos & a video, but yesterday before noon, there were huge groups of Eagles of all ages soaring lazy circles over the yard i was in.
At one point, i counted three dozen!
This went on & on, for a few hours.

There had been another one of those Eagle feeding frenzies today, in the same spot as reported above!
Spotted these two air drying in the old Belcarra Nest Tree a bit later in the day.  heart  heart

Thanks Booni! This explains all the sea lions and Mew Gulls I could hear from closer to Whaling Station this afternoon!
There were a number of sea lions in Whaling Station Bay but they were just resting. I suppose they must have parked themselves there to digest their meal in peace.
