Wiig Nest - 2014 season
« on: July 09, 2014, 10:08:17 PM »

This topic is for documentation and discussions (and tall tales and arguments) about the Wiig nest. Here are boonibarb's notes about this nest:

The Wiigs are the first territory to the right of Mum & Dad Hornby*s Nest territory, as we look out of the cam.
Their Nest is near Sandstone Point & they have two perch trees on that point too, from which they also fish.
We often hear the Wiigs calling in the distance, & two summers ago we heard their two Eaglets & even saw them flying out front of the webcam Nest!
Mum & Dad had to gently escort them back home, & Hali even flew with them.
So these two Nests are close neighbours.

This nest has always been difficult to see. It is high up and very deep. I had very little information about its status, but from the cam we can see the Wiig pair as they go about their days. They were seen perching together right through the period when they would have been incubating. So it looks like another fallow year for the Wiigs.

On June 26 I spent a while in the area just to make sure. I heard the adults calling from the beach, but that was all. A week earlier I paddled past the nest and watched from the water for a while; I saw the two adults, but no sigh of activity from the nest either.

Here's the nest tree, from the road. I love that tree, with its huge rounded top.

The green boughs have grown even more, so we see even less of the tree from the ground. Still, I'm looking for signs of occupancy: down flags, poopshots. I'm not seeing any of that here.
