Nest 25 - Seawright - 2014 season
« on: May 14, 2014, 11:53:17 PM »
This thread is for observations related to the territory of Nest #25.

This nest produced one healthy eaglet last year, while the two adjoining nests were unproductive.

This afternoon, May 14, I paddled my kayak past this nest.
This was the second nest that I checked. Click here to see the first part of that outing.

As I approached this nest, at first I couldn't see anyone.
Then as my angle changed, suddenly this is what I saw!

The Moms seem to be the ones getting a dirty beak by working through the nesting material to aerate it... If this is accurate, then this would without a doubt be Mom Seawright.

From this angle we can see how huge this nest is. It is very old. Its foundation is below the thick green branches that hide most of the rim.
(Meanwhile Mom Seawright seems to be having a snooze.)

On June 9, we took a little paddling trip in the Big Canoe with the HIP Trippers.

We paddled past this nest. The light was right against us and there was too much movement, but I took a couple of bad photos. This one is blurry but still shows one eaglet standing tall on the right side of the trunk!
I'm wondering about the darker patch at rim level on the left edge of the trunk, too. Worth another visit.

For now, we know that there is at least one eaglet in this nest this year.

If any of the HIP Trippers came up with a clearer photo I would be grateful to see it.

My picture of the nest with an eaglet in it.  Taken while in the long canoe on June 9 around 5 pm.  The light was making it difficult for a sharp picture.

Thanks for posting it, Deb! It's still clearer than mine.

I returned to this nest, by land this time, on July 24. I was hoping for clearer pictures of that eaglet.

The nest is difficult to see from the beach, but I was able to find a view of the eaglet.
It was a bit tricky because a branch hid his face unless there was a gust of wind. So I had to time my shots.
(As usual, click on the pictures to see them better, then click again for the full size.)

In this second photo we can see some of the nest branches, white with poop-shots. Signs of occupancy...

I moved a little further along the beach, looking for a better angle to the nest.

I tried various spots but could not get past those thick live branches at the level of the nest rim

But then...
Hey, what's this!

 :eceek
A branching eaglet!

The same eaglet? Nope: a quick look back from my previous angle shows that the first one hasn't moved.
There are two eaglets on this nest!  :heart

Another gust of wind comes and she opens her wings wide again.

Look at these long, long primaries.

Meanwhile we can still see her sibling where we first saw him - so there are two eaglets for sure.
