Otto is blessed to have you with him!

Thank you for the cat message. I understand the concern with the birds.

Today i spotted a Bird hanging out in my bird feeder.
They were very still, even though Otto & i were quite close.
i was able to go right up to the Bird & they didn*t fly away.
They weren*t puffed up, but they were sort of sleepy & their eyes stayed closed!
i should have just grabbed them right there, but i didn*t have a box with a towel in it or a net ready.
So i took some fotos & then they fluttered away.

may 9 2014 14:21 - juvenile or female Purple Finch

They didn*t fly like a Bird usually does, they fluttered slowly, then clumsily landed on a branch.
i guess because they could barely see!
So i went & got my box ready & my Butterfly net in my hand.
i wasn*t very good at capturing them.
i got a few tries with the net, but they always got out & away.
i thought i had lost them, but later in the afternoon i recognized their flight & they landed on my roof then one of my nut Trees.
i tried another net capture there, but again was unsuccessful.
They landed way up in another tree, so i went & got my ladder & net.
This time i put the net over the Bird & used it to grab the Bird with my hands.
Did they every squawk!
i ran down the ladder & into the house where i had the box ready for them.
i used a bit of tape to keep the lid closed, but not so closed there was no air.
They were fluttering away in there like crazy!
i called MARS & Reg answered.
He said they*ve had a lot of cases with these shut eyes.
It is called Finch Conjunctivitis.
More info is here.
i ran with the box to meet the lineup for the 5 ferry off of Hornby & lucked out to find a woman driving who knew where MARS was & would get the Bird in to them!

Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre has a post on their page about this, with a good foto, here.
