I like Mind Your Line the best.  Just some other ideas here.  Anyone can make these posters.  Just need a good picture and either Paint or PhotoShop or even PhotoBucket if making small cards to reproduce.

Has anyone thought of contacting the Canadian Wildlife Federation for exposure across Canada with this idea?

I just spoke with my brother who is a recreational fisherman (goes every weekend), and asked him what would catch his eye. He said a poster displaying a bird/animal caught in a line (not a graphic one, but one that really shows what a line can do to an animal) would get him to stop and have a look. He is in Alberta, so only does lake fishing and mentioned that there aren't too many places a poster can go. I then told him about Bean's idea of a card and he said he would definitely take one if it was handed to him. He also said that he would probably take it and put it in his tackle box where he would see it each time he opened it... which I thought was great.

Here in Vancouver, I know at the Marina I go to, a poster would work well. Not to sure about the cards as I would think a lot would be thrown away once they are given out. Both may work though.... we should use both!!

It is all coming along....this is great!!

Hi canalview. Good idea but we have been trying to clean our beaches and streams for many years with the Streamkeepers and others.

Here is an interesting site with some pictures:

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is celebrating its 18th year this year.

Kristy - nice that your brother is so conscientious. Many people do care. I know the commercial fishing industry has changed tremendously. Today, they toss nothing overboard but pleasure boaters and sports fisherman have no 'big brother' watching them.

Thanks gzebear. Maybe it will help convince people when we ask them to promote the campaign.  wink

I've seen so many birds with fishing line injuries.  Hooks swallowed or caught on their wing or foot.  Probably see on a tiny fraction of all the injuries.  The birds that are brought to us are the lucky ones.  The rest die a slow, painful death.

Another sad and tragic story related to inappropriately discarded fishing line and rope.

Beached humpback whale dies in White Rock.
