Hi, I'm sorry if this has been discussed before but I'd like to suggest that since we're staying on this new chat location for a while, would it be possible to standardize on some things? It is very hard for my eyes to keep up with the many type styles and colors in the chat. I notice a lot of the HEG people put a "hornbyeagles" at the end of their nickname -- that really helps. Do all the HEG and "experts" do that? Could we ask all the HEG people and knowledgeable people to use the yellow background, to help them stand out? And then ask other people not to use it?

I would also love it if we could encourage people to not use the italic-style fonts and to stay away from the dramatic colored backgrounds -- stick with simple bold face type instead. Those wild colored backgrounds boggle my eyes. But that may be too much to try to control...  Again, I'm sorry if this has already been discussed. Thank you for your consideration! :-)

Hi Lida.

you are not the only one that doesn't like the colors and fonts.  You can turn all that off with the little "x" at the bottom of the chat box.  Hope that helps.

Also...the hornbyeagles folks DO use a bright yellow or orange color, Booni...AJL....Doug...Sparky.....however, if you have the colors and fonts turned off, you won't be able to see that.

But Hornby Eagles folks are not the only ones who use the yellow background. I like the "hornbyeagles" ending on HEG members user's names. It does help to clarify a bit.  :nod2

:gaah  i had a terrible horrid pornographic message/long story  sent to me through chatngo today. i dont think they are a eagle watcher as i did not recognise the name/numbers they were using. i have my profile locked down as far as im aware and only am supposed to get messages from people who are on my friends list. i only have one person on that list and she is a very respected lady on our nest so i know it did not come from her, even in another name. if anyone gets a message like what ive just received please report them because it tells me they will not get banned unless many people report the person. i have deleted the message and banned them from doing it again to me but it means they are still free to send to others.   :mgritted

For the first time, I'm not getting the Hornby Chat room either, although the cam is working fine and an eagle is on the cu cam box.   :puzzled2

The Chatango servers are down. People are using the WildEarth chat while we wait for it to come back: http://www.wildearth.tv/hornby-island-eagles

I’m offering some suggestions about chat. Today AJL was trying to explain some things in chat and was unable to make her points because chat was flying in spite of her asking for people to slow down. As is always the case, most people don’t see the request or are unable to sit on their fingers. What she was saying was important: She feels the fears raised in the chat room quickly spread to others and create panic, and this plays a big part in making mountains out of molehills -- which makes all problems harder to solve and some impossible.

1. Make a 2nd Hornby chat room for socializing, recipes, health concerns, talking about other nests, reminiscing, etc. and reserve this chat room exclusively for talk about Hornby Eagles. Make this clear in the labelling and all links to chat. Call it the Hornby Auxiliary Chat or The Hornby Annex or whatever.

This would require mods in the main chat room to firmly direct chatters to the 2nd chat room and then if they did not do so, kick/ban them. That means hurting some feelings. That is part of the deal when you’re moderating a chat room, you have to hurt some feelings sometimes.

I suggest that all mods be in a large bold font along with your yellow dresses, and require other chatters to NOT use that font, so that they stand out.

The mods can post reminders every five minutes or so, a prewritten script they can post into the chat reminding chatters to please take non-Hornby discussion to the other chat and that people who don’t will be booted without warning. (Obviously it would be impossible to eliminate all non-eagle conversations, but it could greatly reduce it and thus slow things down.)

It’s very easy to make another chat room in Chatango, and people are logged in already so they don’t have to log in again. A person can be in both chat rooms at the same time and can have both windows open side by side.

I would suggest the Annex would be unmoderated – clearly posted as such, that no attempt is made to moderate it and people enter at their own risk. Schools could load only the main page.

2. Mods can post an update “Today in the Nest” every five or 10 minutes, briefly stating what everybody wants to know when they join. Example: “Welcome to all joining. Today the eaglets have eaten twice. Mom brought a small fish which Alexandra got, both eaglets got some of the other fish. David flapped and jumped. All is well in the nest.”

I realize this is small potatoes compared with the current issues, but I am just offering it as food for thought, in the event that this all continues. No need to reply.

Thanks for all you do, all of you.

Thank you for the thoughtful suggestions, LidaRose9. A lot has been learned this year so I am sure that the chat will be better next year.
