:ecsad No little chirping of youngsters in the nest?  How sad.

Those last rays of light on the tree before the sun slides over the earth's curvature, make for a lovely photo boonib. Nice catch!

No little chirping being heard.
This is getting depressing & worrying...

We have a nice new Gas Bar at the Hornby Co Op & my favourite part is the wooden structure over the pumps.
So i was looking up, admiring the under-structure, when i noticed poopshots dripping down which led me to realize there was a Nest up there!
i saw little beakies poking out the top, but didn*t manage to get fotos of that.
But here is an adult, perched on the edge of the Nest.
i have never seen a Barn Swallow before.
Look how lovely they are!
Apparently they are not near as common as they used to be or should be, so i am happy to see this family here.

Here i am, still trying to get a good foto of the Black-Headed Grosbeaks in my feeder.
They are getting a little more used to me lurking behind the window with my camera, but you can see they are still keeping an eye on my every move, so i must stand still.
& if they fly off, i must stand still for a long time to wait for them to come back again.
Look at the size of her beak, no wonder they are called Gros(large in French)beak!
She has beautiful colouring, it doesn*t show as well in these shade fotos.

Even though this doesn*t show all of her, it is nice lighting to show you her lovely colouring.
i LOVE the little black stripes!
& there is some yellow in there with the orange.
& is that a parting down the middle, where the incubation/brood patch is??

Okay, now we*re getting there!
Isn*t she fabulous?

lovely grosbeak!  I have never seen one!

The little barn swallow is adorable.  That is ONE species that is plentiful here in Illinois.  The other night, I was outside and there were as many as 50!  Up high in the sky above my house, swarming and feasting on bugs!  I hope it was skeeters!

i have PILES of Towhees in my yard this year!
i just LOVE them.
They are so colourful & their sounds are interesting to hear.
They are here year round.
All spring they were watching while Chester ate, then they would come in & clean up any leftovers that were around, particularly the males.
They got well fed!
This is one of the youngsters.
i am not at all sure how this works, but i think the Towhees have more than one clutch of eggs & youngsters in a season.
It seems to me that i see a set of the youngsters around, then there seem to be another set.
Their feathering changes are fascinating.
i am trying to figure out if they are changing from youngster to more adult colours over the summer, or are these yearlings who have come back.
i suspect the former theory.
i put fresh bark mulch under my feeder to keep it clean & get rid of the old stuff, but these little fellas like to scritch it around with their feet, so the fresh stuff is always getting pushed aside.
Behind this youngster is my creek, which is dry now.
i have those buckets in there to block where the neighbourhood cat likes to lurk. (  :soap  :lumphammer8 )
The fresh bark mulch & old seeds get scritched into these buckets.
So this little fella is getting at the seed on the ground, then hopping into the buckets down in there to get at seed!

Here you can see him disappearing into the bucket then hopping back out again!
This was fun to watch.

i am checking the Nest for any action, every chance i get!
i am hoping to see some little beaks poking out, or an adult still incubating the eggs, but this is what i am seeing every time i check!

Look in this foto how one of the sparkling neck feathers is flying open!

Here, too.

Here, the wing is moving so fast, it is see-through!
