Video from the archive of the above action.
In the first video, Mum gulls from the closeup camera box for the longest time

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvOXRou2ci4" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvOXRou2ci4</a>

In the second video, Dad flies in with TWO Fish for Mum!
He has a huge one in his beak which she grabs & swallows whole.
As soon as that one goes down, she grabs the one from his foot, too!
What a hero Dad is!

OK, we have nestorizing, grasses being brought in, Mom calling for food from the nest, gifts being brought. All signs of nesting behavior and possible eggs imminent. But we don't have the eagles staying in the nest, and we have intruders.

Is there a question whether the herring run was big enough this year at Hornby? There was one herring run, maybe two, but smaller than the last couple of years we've seen. Could this account for years when Mom and Dad Hornby haven't had eggs? It is really late now for eggs for them, is it too late this year?

EMC from an unprofessional point of view, doesn't look like there will be eggs. If Mom did lay maybe it wasn't strong & broke but i really have no idea on that, guessing. To me the herring run/s seemed small may or may not be a reason.

EMC, judging from what I've observed so far this spring and what Booni has reported, most of the other pairs on the island are on eggs. This is the fourth year that I collect stats, and from what I've seen so far, 2 or 3 or 4 of our productive eagle pairs seem to take a break or lose their eggs on any given year; this year fits the pattern. If the eagles were solely dependant on an abundant herring run to lay eggs, then the whole island would be taking a break this year.

Thanks for the informed input Wren. The eagles put a lot of energy into the eaglets each year. It makes sense for their own survival that they take a break now and then.  :eclove :nod2

Perhaps we'll worry less when we see them haggard toward the end of a season knowing this.  :heart
