Nest Dunlop Point - 2011-2012 season
« on: May 01, 2012, 04:27:52 PM »

This is where we will post fotos, videos & discussion of the Dunlop nest.

This nest is right on Dunlop Point, at the southern tip of Tribune Bay.
i*d pick this nest for an eagle cam.
The vista is magnificent.
They have fantastic fishing grounds here, & the leftover droppings show some well-fed Eagles!
Last year, this nest had two eaglets!
Read about them & the last season of this Nest

i was at the chicken farm picking up a supply of chicken sausages for myself.
i*d planned on stopping at the Dunlop Nest, which was on my way home.
i was at the stop sign, about to turn left to go towards the Nest area when an Eagle flew over my head & landed in a tree across the road from me & low to the ground!
What was she doing?
She was looking around & hopping from branch to branch.
A Crow arrived & was dive bombing her, trying to get her to leave.
i was sitting there with my mouth hanging open when i remembered that i had my little camera on the seat next to me!
i turned off my van & grabbed it & rolled down the window.
She was harvesting a stick!
In this first foto, you can see she has chosen the one she wants & is about to snap it off.
She is ignoring the dive bombing Crow, who i didn*t manage to catch in the foto.
If you look close, you can see some dried blood on her beak.
As usual, the Dunlops are eating well!

In this second foto, she has snapped off the stick & turned to face me with it.
i don*t know how, when she is in amongst all those branches with such a long stick!
The broken off end is to our right, her left.

There she goes with her nice curvy stick!
She is transferring it from her beak to her foot & taking off at the same time.
Back to the Nest, where i found her later with my good camera.

Those two eaglets are indeed so different from each other!
I love the fluffy first down still remaining on their heads...

Nice full crops on them, too!
And Mom Dunlop is giving you that don't-mess-with-me look.

What a beautiful, crystal-clear picture, with soft gorgeous light.

Very nice photos and report, Boon!  It's so helpful to see the sequence Mom Dunlop followed in harvesting the stick, along with your comments.

Okay, last night i got home way too late to get at my fotos properly, but i was determined to post just one foto of those Eaglets before bed.
Now i will go back to the beginning.
After spotting Mum Dunlop harvesting a stick, i went to where i could see Dunlop Nest.
i set up my camera & almost right away, Mum started doing battle with a stick.
Look who popped up to watch!
(If you click on the Slide Show, it will open up nice & big)
