Nest #22 Helliwell - 2011-2012 season
« on: December 21, 2011, 09:11:13 AM »

Here is the place for information, videos, fotos & discussion of Nest #22 Helliwell for the 2011-2012 season.
This Nest has a beautiful location, in a forest, but with LOTS of waterfront perch trees & views nearby.
Anytime you walk Helliwell, you see Eagles.
So this Nest pair is often not the only Eagles you will see there.
Last year, these Eagles had one Eaglet that wren & i observed.
i think i still have fotos & videos to post of our sightings?
In august of last season, we got a call about a young Eaglet down in Helliwell & went looking for him in the dark, with no success.
The next day, winter wren got another call about him, & with a volunteer*s assistance, was able to capture him & get him into MARS.
wren called the youngster Helliwell.
The story of this Eaglet begins  here
Once he got to MARS, he got renamed Shredder, as he had a habit of relieving stress by shredding his bedding!
The story of what happened with the Eaglet*s care at MARS begins
 here

Here is winterwren*s map of the Hornby nests, so that you can see where it is.

Here is the second edition of my nest map.

This map sums up our observations of the nests of Hornby Island for the summer of 2011. The information was collected from direct observation by Booni and myself, and from conversations with the nests' neighbours.

It was a lovely sunny day so my friend & i went for a walk in Helliwell Park.
We headed straight for the sunny bluffs there.
We were just cresting a rise when i spotted an Eagle in a low tree near a bench next to the path we were on.
i was carrying my camera, & hoping the Eagle would wait til we got there so i could photograph.
But they flew off further down the trail.
As we got closer, i spotted the Eagle on a lovely conglomerate rock in the water next to the bluff.
You almost always see Eagles in Helliwell, so this might not be one of the Nest*s pair, however where they were perched is not far from the Nest.

A lovely, pensive eagle - it could be Shredder's parent - maybe.

That is a beautiful eagle picture, Booni.  I really like seeing them in around where their usual environment.

i was watching the Eagle & tiptoeing closer & closer with my camera.
My eye was caught by movement in the water to the left of the Eagle.
An Otter!
& this one had caught a nice fish!

Turns out there was a whole family of Otters!
Here you can see three of them swimming towards the shore rocks.
The one in the middle has a nice fish!

The Eagle carried on about his business, seeming not to notice.

The Otters were still doing their thing in the water next to the Eagle*s rock.
i love watching Otters move, whether in the water or on the land.
They*re so *slinky*.

This Eagle has interesting spotting on the left side of their head.
If it is permanent colouring, it will make it easier to identify this particular Eagle in the future.

We carried on on our walk & got to the point of Helliwell & were looking out at Flora Island.
i spotted this little fella swimming nearby.
From what i learned today, this is a Seal pup born this year.
You can tell by the way his nose sort of sticks up.
Older Seals have a straight slope from the top of their heads to the tip of their nose.

On the beach near the Seals was this gorgeous Oystercatcher, in amongst the seaweed covered rocks.
