With the entanglement of the Sidney/Saanich eaglet, known line in the nest and the publicity its getting, what can be done?
Can the Canadian Enviornmentalists get something going re: regular cleanup of fishing line?
We know line will get free, snagged, etc. There is no way to stop that happening by accident. So what could be done?
Put your thoughts together on this to "think out of the box" and come up with some solutions.
Regular shoreline cleanups? Could there be such a thing as line that dissolves/breaks down after a length of time?
-
Anyone who has ever fished knows a line can be broken and lost. I don't know that there is a solution to that part of the equation. To me the answer seems to lie in awareness and action. Educate the public on the dangers of fishing line, plastics, and all kinds of garbage that people either leave, or see and think - it's not my problem, I didn't do it. If we could get people, and a good start is with children, to pick up and dispose of anything that does not belong there, it would be an ongoing clean-up. It is possible to do, look at the strides that have been made with pet owners "curb your dog" campaigns - and how many people do clean-up after their dogs now. If we can expand this to include all garbage - especially the plastics and line - it would be such a tremendous step forward.
Wouldn't it be great to have Flyer as the "Poster Eaglet" promoting picking up fishing line that is found? Is it possible to start such a campaign?
-
MJ I think that would be up to HWF to use Flyer as a campaign, great idea.
-
One thing we can do is increase awareness of the danger of fishing line, along with plastics and other man made debris.
Mr emc thought of putting up posters in places near beaches and rivers and lakes, reminding people to look for these items and remove them.
Like Smoky the Bear, only you can prevent forest fires.
Only you can prevent..... ( what? Needless suffering...)
-
If we could at least get these ideas flowing and spread to the media. While this subject is hot, we might be able to be effective.
-
I mentioned the idea of a "Flyer Poster Eaglet" on the Ustream chat during the rescue. Quite a few of the HWF people were there and commented that they thought it was a good idea. I hope they will follow-up on it, but you are right Nancy - we could not do it, all the videos, screencaps etc are all under HWF copyright.
-
We could still create some posters using pictures of line causing birds problems and perhaps plastic also causing suffering. There are plenty of examples of both and we would just need to choose and then contact whoever has the copyright to ask permission to use their image for this wonderful assist for wildlife. I'm sure we could find some people willing . :biggrin6
Come up with the slogan :
" Only you can prevent needless suffering" Pick up and dispose of plastic and fishing line.
Just a possibility. Need more ideas ...
-
I am a fisherperson, been since I was small. Just recently have I discovered the consequence of "fishing line" can be!!!!! I think posters with pictures would help! If the pics are copywrited-get permission!! Spread the word!! If they care about copy writes----let them join in and use the pics as if it was their idea!!
-
Slogan for posters: MIND YOUR LINE
with info as you have already been mentioning
-
Luv, I love "Mind Your Line." Good one IMO. :heart
-
"Mind your Line" sounds good to me too .
Anyone find some images to consider?
-
Hello,
Once a poster is finalized, I would be more than happy to volunteer to put them up. I am a teacher at a school right on the shore line in Vancouver and I know my students would be happy to help if needed too. I also have access to a busy Marina where they would been seen by many.
My question is, is there any legalities that are out there that is needed to post flyers in public?
If you need volunteers, I am in, please just let me know!
:heart
-
Thanks for volunteering to post
We'll have to look into how/where they can be posted.
-
May I suggest "Mind Your Line" to International Bird Rescue Research Center, too? We are always trying to get people to pick up fishing line. We've had so many seabirds wrapped in line. Many swallowed hooks, which our vet retrieved during surgery. Heck, we had a Great Blue Heron two years in a row! (we banded him the first year)

Beans, do you think they might want to work on this with us? I think they have images that would be effective.
-
Beans, I am happy to give them permission to use "MIND YOUR LINE"! I hope it will help.
-
This is a google search for animals/birds caught on fidhing line. Perhaps someone can look these over and see if there is some to consider for the poster " Mind Your Line"
http://www.google.com/search?q=animals+bird+caught+on+fishing+line&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari
And from the first page of results, out of 77 pages. :eceek
Wonder if this is a real problem?? :sigh

I see this as a world-wide plea. For Hornby Eagles. For Sidney Eagles. For all birds everywhere.
Perhaps we could use one of Booni's pictures of the Hornby Eagles. And David Hancock could use a picture of the Sidney Eagles, taken by ground crew. We don't have to use the same poster, but we can certainly share the idea. After all, it's not about us, it's about the birds.
Edit: this picture is an example only, taken from the internet. We won't be using this one. Emc

I sent IBRRC the picture of the duck with fishing hook (successfully removed) and another picture of a Great Blue Heron, who was with us twice. And released twice.

Great ideas beans! :biggrin3
Websites is a good idea, and of course ours. :biggrin3
I'm thinking some recycled paper posters for stores that would sell fishing supplies and licenses, any other indoor place.
And some permanent signs at Harbors, Lakes, Piers, other popular fishing spots. Eventually any shoreline....
-
Beans, those look awesome! And I feel honored that they may use the mind your line slogan!!!
-
Now if we can just get moving on this....
-
Next step seems like to find a place that can print posters on recycled paper. What size for the paper posters do you all think would be good?
Get permission for pictures.
-
I was thinking
Fishing Line Kills Birds
Don't Leave Your Line Behind
But when Luv offered
Mind Your Line
I concluded Luv's line is the best, but the three go well together, with hers on top!
-
You have permission to use my foto for this campaign!
-
Beans, I love how the two phrases work together! Your samples are crisp and to the point. Nice work.
-
Thanks, Barb! I don't know where we go from here....
-
Kristy, the poster images in post # 17 and # 20 are ready to go.
If you could print these images out and show the manager/harbor master at the Marina to get permission to post would be great! You might ask if paper posters in windows, etc are acceptable. Also ask if a permanent sign on a stand outside , at their choice, would be acceptable. You would be posting the first one and setting a precedent! :biggrin3
If the manager/harbor master says more permission is needed, note who should be approached next.We are going for it.
The same person may know who we need to talk to re: permission for the shoreline.
We as a group and as individuals could send letters/ emails to the officials. :ecsmile
-
Beans, can you see about getting permission for us to use a heron or pelican image from IBBRC?
We don't have eagles at our beach marina, so a heron or pelican would be better.
However, in Ojai, there is a new ( first) pair at Lake Casitas, so the bald eagle ones should be great there!
Everybody put on your thinking caps and think what possibilities are in your area... Fishing tackle stores, marinas, places where fishing licenses are sold. Any place near water that might place a poster.
We need to come up with a poster for the non fisherman to look for fishing line and plastics to save a life.
How about FIND THE LINE
FISHING LINE KILLS...etc
-
Those poster suggested are great especially Mind Your Line. We need to keep it SIMPLE so they get the message with just a glance, not have to read a lot of information. Posted at Marinas, Public and Private boat docking places, where fishermen put their boats in the water.
I live at a marina, over 150 boats and a public docking station, where many other boats come and go. We need to have them laminated or printed on plastic that will not be damaged by wind and rain. In the US every year they have a River Sweep day where volunteers clean the banks of inland waterways. It could be made part of the advertisement for volunteers to be sure and pick up fishing line, hooks and lead sinkers when they clean the banks.
Just some thoughts....
-
Great ideas Teros! I was looking on line at signs and found some outdoor ones with frames that weren't that expensive, imo.
If we found a site that has many locations, the signs could be ordered from the local person and not have shipping be an issue. The images could be at the site or sent to the local person putting them up. How does that sound?
Teros, can you print out an image from post # 17 or # 20 and approach the marina harbor master for permission?
-
Also, we need to figure out who to approach for the waterway clean ups to ask them to use the images.
I think every area has these clean ups at least annually.
For other countries, we can have them printed up in their language. Perhaps tweaked to fit their language better. This is a world wide problem!
-
:biggrin3 You can move Mountains!! this is a great idea!
-
Kristy and Teros: let us know if you are not able to print out the images from here. If you can't, we'll figure out another way. :ecwink
Anyone else needing help on this, let us know.

-
I am able to print the posters but they turn out too small... As small as the photo in the post. Should I save the photo first and then try and print? We will definitely need to make them bigger.
-
Perhaps one day...a small handout can be issued with every fishing license bought. A great introduction to the new and the young fishermen.
Lots of kids need to do Senior Projects for school and I think this would be a wonderful idea for a scout looking for an Eagle Scout project.
We have seen individual kids do some wonderful things...some of them gaining nationwide participation.
-
I'm thinking we need to make a separate thread for the poster images that are ready to down load. Before we make them available we need to be sure we have permission to use the image. I'm thinking that for Booni's photos we need to add ©Boonibarb 2011 at the bottom of the image. We probably need to add the © information for all of the images.
Once we have this information for sure, I would be willing to download it and put it in photoshop and adjust the image size. I am pretty sure Booni will allow us to use the original image for any of the photos she gives us permission to use.

That is gorgeous beans. Who do we add for copyright? Who is the one from # 17?
We need to add copyrights for each one.

Mary Jane, you read my mind! I was just looking on my PC for that pic! Naturally, I have the original one on the wall, but I could not find the scanned copy. That would be a good picture to use, too!
The problem is making the pictures larger. They can lose resolution and look terrible. I wish PB allowed me to upload high def pictures, but it doesn't :( And I add the text with the PB tools, as I no longer have Photoshop.
-
I think I have the original somewhere on my computer, which is very large. If anyone is interested in using this image - for those that would rather print black/white copies instead of color, I can look for the original photo of the drawing.
-
I think the poster should be uploaded as a thumbnail of a large high resolution picture. It can then be printed to a large size without losing the clarity. One of booni's or wren's photos at high res with the text added.
Next problem is the largest size most home printers can print - that is usually 8 1/2 x 11 or 8 1/2 x 15. Staples could print enlarged copies from the 8 1/2 x 11 inches.
-
An 8 x 12 would be big enough to give the idea to potential sites. Then if allowed, we'd have bigger sizes perhaps and the outdoor signs too.
-
Beans, in the Tammy the Turtle book, is there a good image of the turtle with plastic in its mouth or something similar? ( preview doesn't show one)
Would we want to try to get permission for the image?
-
Personally, I like our posters better than the HelpWildlife.com ones.
This link tho, has a great pic of a turtle with plastic in its mouth.
http://www.helpwildlife.com/plasticbags.html
There is a lot of info in these links sited by AJL and posted by Mary Jane. Another link is given inside one of these articles at Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program.
http://mrrp.myfwc.com/
They have a list of some of the animals harmed. This info could support our cause.
-
One of the worst things for wildlife, including sea creatures, fish, diving birds - are the plastic rings that hold 6-pack cans together. They get their head through one of the holes. Lots of seals are found that way.
These things drift around forever in the water.
-
I have not been following this thread very well, but have looked through all the suggested posters this morning. While the ones with beautiful birds (eagle, pelican, heron) are nice, I really think that an image of a bird tangled in fishing line would be far more effective and harder to ignore. I can imagine fishermen just walking past the lovely pictures - nothing to grab their attention.
-
I was thinking the same thing Nancy! A tangled bird may catch their eye more to stop them to have a look and get them to think about their own habits.
Are there any photos out there we may be able to use?
-
At the bottom of this page there are some photos. Some are too yucky, imo. And we'd have to get permission to use them.
http://www.helpwildlife.com/index.html
IBRRC has some photos that we would permission . I'll look at some and see what we might like.
-
I'm being very picky. Imo, the pic should catch the eye, show the line clearly, and not be gruesome.
Here is one to consider:
From hardrainproject.com
(http://www.hardrainproject.com/thumbnail.php?im=SP1114810.jpg&type=U) (http://)
Comment : this line not seen clearly enough
-
This one is from HelpWildlife
(http://www.helpwildlife.com/_wizardimages/turtle.jpg) (http://)
-
I don't care for gruesome, but such things will catch the eye of people, especially teenager boys - and we really do want to reach them with our message too. :puzzled2
Maybe we can find some that show the distress and injury without being too graphic. The pic above shows the line clearly but one has to "look" at it to see the terrible injury to the leg. At a glance it doesn't convey the message - and I think a glance is all the posters will get - at least to get attention.
-
This is a site I found, there are 6 pages of pics if someone would like to look and see what they like.
http://tinyurl.com/42h5tvu
IBRRC, didn't have any pics on their website that would work, imo.
And a google search page

At the HelpWildlife site, there are some, "What to do"
One is, how do you get line down from a tree. Would be good to put in our tips topic, imo.

After looking thru all the pictures & suggestions, I think you have it with # 17 & #20. Showing the beauty of the bird with the succinct message seems like the best idea. We could ALL make enquiries to post this where fishing tackle and licenses are sold in our area, sporting good stores, marinas, etc. I can make some calls to a couple state & county areas in Southern California and see if they already have something along these lines or who I would have to discuss this with further. More to come.
~~tarvena~~
-
Thank you Tarvena. #17 was just an example. We won't use that one, we don't know who to credit. #20 is booni's and we have her permission to use it. :biggrin6
Look forward to hearing what you find out, :ecsmile
Something to consider:
Do we want one image only to represent our poster?
Or
Do we want a few different ones, including plastic? ( ie: some sites may be more appropriate for eagles, some other sites, non- eagles- we don't have eagles at our marina)
-
I'm thinking we want several - we can post ready to print posters in a thread and state that we have cleared the permissions to use them. This way anyone can print them out and post them in their own areas.
-
OK, lets get some finished and in their own topic. :biggrin3 :eclove
-
I think we need to check with beans to make sure some of these images are ones she has taken and that we have permission to use them. :ecwink. Then we'll have several ready.
-
We need some more input on slogans. Some ideas.. Need more please :biggrin6
For the fisherman or non fisherman

emc, beans, booni and all the contributors, THANK YOU! This is a worthy cause and we can make the difference here. And all you who are volunteering to help put the posters out (Kristy) you rock!!
I think these pictures are impactful.

This week I'm going out to the marina to take some pictures. If I'm lucky, I'll find a brown pelican. Most like it will be gulls, but they are always getting entangled in fishing line, too. I'll get a high def pic suitable for printing a poster. None of my pics are copyrighted, so anyone can use them.
Does anyone know of a picture hosting service that will allow uploads a big pics? PhotoBucket has a limit (I think it's 800px wide) and we need a site that will allow 2000 or even more.

We need a big pic of eagle above to blow up to poster size.
Another idea is to simply print up small cards and hand them out at docks, etc. Here's an example: I imported the pictures to MsWord document. I can put cardstock in my computer and print out a few pages. Then I get a paper cutter and cut them apart. Voila! Small pictures to hand out. One does not need to start with a big picture to do this project. And anyone with access to a color printer could do this. Even black and white might work.

On my pics, I would print "fishing line kills birds" so the people I give the cards to would know that I'm trying to save the birds.

"Find the line" does not work for me. Mind Your Line tells fishermen/women to watch their line and carry it out. Find the line may be a lot of things - the line for corn dogs? :ecwink :heart.
-
I like Mind Your Line the best. Just some other ideas here. Anyone can make these posters. Just need a good picture and either Paint or PhotoShop or even PhotoBucket if making small cards to reproduce.

Has anyone thought of contacting the Canadian Wildlife Federation for exposure across Canada with this idea?

I think Flickr allows big downloads.

I just spoke with my brother who is a recreational fisherman (goes every weekend), and asked him what would catch his eye. He said a poster displaying a bird/animal caught in a line (not a graphic one, but one that really shows what a line can do to an animal) would get him to stop and have a look. He is in Alberta, so only does lake fishing and mentioned that there aren't too many places a poster can go. I then told him about Bean's idea of a card and he said he would definitely take one if it was handed to him. He also said that he would probably take it and put it in his tackle box where he would see it each time he opened it... which I thought was great.
Here in Vancouver, I know at the Marina I go to, a poster would work well. Not to sure about the cards as I would think a lot would be thrown away once they are given out. Both may work though.... we should use both!!
It is all coming along....this is great!!

Kristy, that is terrific input from your brother! Thanks!

Hi canalview. Good idea but we have been trying to clean our beaches and streams for many years with the Streamkeepers and others.
Here is an interesting site with some pictures:

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is celebrating its 18th year this year.
Kristy - nice that your brother is so conscientious. Many people do care. I know the commercial fishing industry has changed tremendously. Today, they toss nothing overboard but pleasure boaters and sports fisherman have no 'big brother' watching them.

Lidarose posted this video in chat of a whale been saved that was wrapped up in fishing net, nice ending. TY Lidarose

Thanks gzebear. Maybe it will help convince people when we ask them to promote the campaign. :ecwink

I've seen so many birds with fishing line injuries. Hooks swallowed or caught on their wing or foot. Probably see on a tiny fraction of all the injuries. The birds that are brought to us are the lucky ones. The rest die a slow, painful death.

Another sad and tragic story related to inappropriately discarded fishing line and rope.
