Chapter 9 - Phoenix Memorial
Hatched: Apr 29, 2010              Death: Jul 14, 2010

Doug and Sheila Carrick, the Hornby Eagle Group and friends, are shocked and saddened to report the sudden collapse and death of our beloved Phoenix. A rescue effort was underway, but the eaglet's decline was sudden and swift. We ask that you remember Phoenix by supporting the work of rehabbers all around the world. The work they perform is invaluable to the health and welfare of all wildlife. We love you Phoenix, and we mourn with Mom and Dad Hornby.

The members created so many nice screencaps and videos. :) It was very, very difficult to narrow it down to just do some highlights to tell the season's events.

You should all be proud of yourselves and what you have so generously shared.  :eclove

It was an interesting and educational season on the Hornby nest as these screencaptures, photos and videos depict.  We are so fortunate to have a ground crew on Hornby Island to give us a fuller dimension on the eagles' lives.

Now, our little eaglet has her own storybook to go down in history.

What a wonderful record of the 2010 season!

I am new to writing about Phoenix...I've been watching in silence...just reveling in the beauty of these magnificent creatures and reading what everyone else was saying....I'm sure there are many more like me out there, who didn't feel the need to write...just quietly enjoyed...of course I blabbed about this to anyone who would listen and shared with friends who were also watching but not necessarily writing...but now, with her passing it was just not enough....With the country and the world in such shambles, I so looked forward to watching at night, eastern time between llpm and 1 am....Phoenix's time between 8 and 11 pm- to see nightime meals, Dad adjusting the nest as soon as Mom wasn't looking, Phoenix going potty after dinner and nestling in close to either parent....Sometimes I fell asleep in my darkened bedroom watching on my laptop and listening to the sounds of nature amidst the evening breezes...I will miss that terribly and I will miss knowing that she would have been such a welcome addition to her world and connectively to my own. I will never forget the three of them and will look forward to another season....but this first experience will remain, in my heart, the epitamy of everything good in our world..and hope that it's enough to outway all else that seems to be wrong....Thanks for reading, whoever you are out there....Judith

Bumpeynite, you've expressed feelings we all share.  Thank you.

I just looked up the date where I first saw a thread with the link for the web cam that was posted on an unrelated board, and it was May 19th.  I clicked on it immediately, so this was what precious Phoenix looked like (at least on the 21st) the first time I saw her, and I was instantly under her spell  :eclove:

Who could not love a face like that?  :heart

I'm a widow living alone, so I spend a lot of my time checking out what's happening online.  I post on 4 forums, and with emails, blogs, facebooks, etc., I would check them periodically.  And then there was P.  I couldn't stay away from that nest... I had it minimized while I was on other sites, but with the speaker on pretty high, I could hear any movement of the parents landing, or Phoe moving around, and I would instantly bring up the screen.  I always maximized it when I was watching TV, then I could see what was happening.  Of couse everytime the little message came on about cutting me off in 30 seconds, I'd have to dash over and click the green "OK".

It was wonderful seeing the pics and videos, and reliving Phoenix's short life.  Thanks to all involved in putting it together.

I've seen the "hot spot" of my fave P memory... the day the little brat bit her mom on the leg, and mom had to shake her off.  So sweet!  She wanted that fish.  :mhihi

I know I'll fall in love with another little eaglet next spring if we have one.  But I'll never forget Phoenix.  :sad

I, like many others, have been lurking, watching and learning, but not posting.  I began watching just before Phoenix hatched.  Who could help loving this wonderful creature?!  I managed to check in at least once every few days, or sometimes more often.  It was such a shock to tune in Friday evening and discover Phoenix had died.  While this tragic turn of events has broken my heart, too (I can literally feel a tightening in the chest and tears beginning to form at times :eccry), I try to remember that this is sometimes nature's way.  It's easy for us to attribute human emotions to wild creatures, but in this case, I hope the parents aren't feeling the devastation that we are feeling.  I have registered with the forum because I intend to continue following the Hornby eagle family and I hope Ma and Pa continue to thrive and produce many more little eaglets.  :heart  Best regards and many thanks to all those responsible for allowing us this fabulous opportunity to have a glimpse into the eagles' world.  :binocs :clap

Beth ... thanks for the welcome!  I found out about the web cams last Spring from a friend in another (totally unrelated) forum.  She lives in Australia, but she was telling me about something that is practically in my back yard!  =)  Gotta love the internet!

Since I heard this sad news about Phoenix on Friday, I have spent a good part of this weekend reading everything I could find to get more background info, etc., so I felt comfortable enough to post here.  I live so close to Hornby, but had no idea about these live streaming cams.  It's so fascinating!  I was surprised to hear that there was actually a nest and cam right in the city of Vancouver, at the Lafarge concrete plant!  Anyway, thanks again for the welcome, and I look forward to watching more and participating here in future!  :ecsmile

Hello,   I work with someone who's good friend resides in Vancouver, thus how I got so wrapped up in these eagle's lives & the world of Hornby Island.  I live in Massachusetts and and even though Hornby & the eagles are on the other side of the country, I felt so close to the eagles and the regulars on the chat forum.  I was fortunate enough to actually witness Phoenix hatching and could'nt believe it when I witnessed her take her very last breath.
I want to thank everybody for letting us into the lives of the Hornby eagles. I will keep visiting all the links related to them.

Much gratitude and appreciation goes out to the Carricks - keep up the exceptional work - I know this time must be very stressful for you too but please know that thousands of us are in your debt.

Well said, bumpeynite.  Many lurkers are now members, because of Phoenix.  Thank you lawnmowerman, humility and tears for all of us no matter who we are and what our lives have seen.  It was still a blue weekend... why couldn't we have just had our Phoenix fly and be well?  Is that too much to ask in this world gone mad, for this spot of wonderful.  I guess, a 76-day-old eaglet's destiny was to make thousands of people around the world humbler and a little kinder on that day in July.  Thank you Carricks and the HEG, thank you everyone here for your pure hearts and glorious nature.

"I guess, a 76-day-old eaglet's destiny was to make thousands of people around the world humbler and a little kinder on that day in July."

Trixie, what a wonderful way of putting our sad event into perspective.  Thank you.  I know Phoenix and her parents gave me a new respect and love for wildlife and nature, especially bald eagles.  It's easy to take these majestic creatures for granted, but now we see how fragile their existence can be.  They work hard raising their offspring, and I feel in my heart that they are as grief-stricken in their own way losing Phoenix as we would be losing a child.

I just hope God gives us the opportunity to experience another darling eaglet or two from Ma and Pa Hornby come the spring.

Thank you for posting all the photos of the various stages of Phoenix's birth...and unfortunate death.  I had just discovered the Hornby Island Nest Cam just about a month ago and all seemed well.  I would mostly  see Phoenix...I thought Phoenix WAS the mother...I had not been to this forum then.   I really thought "she" Phoenix was getting reading to lay eggs...then just a few days ago...NOTHING!...Where is everyone? I said to myself.  "Mom" decided to go out a bit to stretch?...Hmmm...it's only today that I learned that "Mom" WAS the baby and that he had just passed away.  Life is a bummer sometimes.  I was saddened to learn the news.  :ecsad

Thank you, barberella.  As I was watching the "viewer" numbers climb during Phoenix's recovery, I marvelled that there were at least 2,600 people who would be melancholy and likely a little placid from the grief.  Feathers less likely to be ruffled that day, just because of Phoenix (maybe pun intended?).  Tighter hugs, smiles, maybe manners and lower voices?  Phenomenal really.

For all the devastation, I don't think there could have been a better end scene.  The longing for Phoenix to move dammit, hearing the voices and ladders, waiting, listening.  Seeing the perfection that was the very brave, best of humans, Dan Hamilton, his tenderness and trepidation and his brilliant wave to us, the receiving of Phoenix's body by the Hornby Island Nest elders, the post-recovery story of the climb and the picture of Dan in the trees with a face that spoke to everyone about what was being experienced, the moving of heaven and earth for a 76-day-old eaglet.

Seeing pictures of Mom and Dad Hornby helps today, and posts by Doug and others closest to the heartbreak.  I like to think thoughts about the minor celebrity that Dan, and the MARS group, has become.  How he will forever have a grand story to tell.  I wonder how many times he'll tell it.

And even today, the preliminary cause resting most assured that there was nothing that could have been done, nothing that we need second-guess ourselves about.  It helps to know that the end of the life of Phoenix was about as glorious as an end of life could be.  We know how special her life was and how special could be the effect of her death amongst the secret society of Phoenix.

This is my first posting, and I like many, started watching Phoenix shortly after she was born, and had no idea how hooked I would get on the site.  I checked the site several times a day and sometimes just sat there and watched the interaction as if in a trance.  It was such an amazing gift to be a part of their lives.  When I didn't see her in the nest the next day, my first thought, was that somehow I had missed her first flight, so starting searching frantically to see what and when that had happened.  I was so shocked to learn that we had lost her.  I had no idea how much I could cry over a bird that I had never physically seen, but felt as if she were part of my life.  I, too, thank everyone of you who keep the site going and all the wonderful comments that are made.  I keep thinking if I look close enough she will still be there.

Thank you , it was truly a labor of love.  ( OH, at times we'd have to console each other, "what do you mean, cut more pictures out", NO... I can't do it, and the other one of us would be able to. :) )

Thank you for the beautiful tribute to Phoenix and Ma and Pa Hornby.  The pictures were beautiful!  It was a wonderful memorial for Phoenix.

Phoenix was not with us long but she taught us so much.  :eclove  ((Hugs)) to all.  Phoenix will be remembered with love by all of us who knew her.  She was a wonderful, beautiful bird.  She is now free to fly as close to the sun as she wants and never has to worry about her wings melting.

Thank you so much for these pictures!  I didn't start watching the nest until Phoenix was a few days old (a friend sent me the link), so I missed seeing Mom and Dad readying the nest, incubating Phoenix and Dudley, and Phoe's entrance into the world.

The picture of Mom and Dad Hornby in the nest with the heart between them, and another heart in the sky gave me goosebumps.  What a 'once in a lifetime' picture!  Worthy of framing I would say.

Thank you again - your love of Phoenix and her parents is evident in every frame you included.  :heart

Thank you everyone. emc and I cannot tell you how happy we are that you have been touched. Please note that there were many contributors, photographers and supporters in this project. Nothing in the world is more pleasing than knowing that you were able to see the two hearts and even more love too.  :heart

Hi everyone,

I am so saddened by her loss.  Watching this is such a gift - to peek into a world I would otherwise never see.  I only learned of this link a short time before she passed but feel as if I watched and loved her much longer.  I am surprised at how attached I became to Phoenix and her parents.

I am a bit concerned - if the cause of Phoenix's death was an infectious disease - where did she catch it and could this affect future eagles?

I am so thanful to see both Mom and Dad Hornby flying close by.  I believe spirits share this world with us and that Phoenix soars next to her mom and dad.

My heart goes out to the Carrick's and everyone so much more involved - thank you for loving and caring for her.

DKF:  we're waiting for more results from the necropsy.  Perhaps then, some of these questions can be answered.  We'll post them in the "What Happened to Phoenix" topic.

Tragically, one of the 2010 Nesting Season Highlights for me was Dan Hamilton.  Does the HEG have any follow-up information about him and how he has been recuperating since his brilliant recovery?  I've been to the MARS website and can find no biographical information, though I do realize it is a very busy time and wouldn't expect speedy updates.  Maybe this has been covered somewhere else.  I will never forget Phoenix and I hope for a grand future for brave, beautiful Dan.

Has the eaglet left the nest already?  I was trying to maybe catch it testing its wings in the nest before leaving.  It's been about 2 weeks since I've last viewed the site.  Thanks!

Dan is a very brave man and we were so fortunate that he agreed to climb the trees to get Phoenix and bring her down in a timely manner, which was very important in order to make sure the tests were done right away.

Dan is not employed by MARS.  He lives on Hornby Island with his new wife and works with a partner in their business which involves climbing trees. Boonibarb apparently met his wife when they both stood on the ground as Dan climbed up and up and up to the nest which is 120 ft. above the ground in a tree that is not stable at the top.

Many people agree with you that Dan deserves our thanks and the best life has to offer in the future.   :eclove

One of our members, Trixie in Ontario, approached me about lightening my foto of Dan, so that his face is more visible.
i eagerly accepted!
Thank you Trixie!!  :eclove
Here is the lightened version, with his anguished face more evident.  :heart

First of all I am thankful for the updates.  Secondly, I want to apologize for posting incorrectly. I am so new at this that I kept posting to "ground observations."  I finally figured it out. I hope I am in the right place now.

Tigerlady, thank you for the clarification and information.  Yet another reason to visit Hornby Island.  I am glad to know he's among all the love there.

Thank you boonibarb for posting the lightened picture of "Our Knight" for everyone.  His face is priceless!

fk2618, there is no easy way to say this, but our dear Phoenix died suddenly on July 14th; about a week or so before she would have fledged. She (that has been confirmed) had appeared alright about two days before, then the next day she wouldn't eat and was sneezing. it was sensed that she was in trouble and a rescue plan was put into effect. Sadly she died before the plan could be acted on. For more details please check AJL's post What Happened To Phoenix  (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=355.msg17665#msg17665)

There are two threads here for sharing memories etc. Memories of Phoenix  (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=353.0)  and Sharing Memories of Phoenix (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=351.0)

Doug has seen Mum and Dad around since then. Phoenix is greatly missed by all of us here.

Just when I didn't think I could possibly cry anymore I saw the link to the "Gone too soon" video.  Of course I had to go there, it was so beautiful and I am still crying like a baby.  It is really quite amazing that with all the stresses of everyday life and how rushed we all are to get through the day, this tiny little perfect eaglet could give us so much peace and contentment by just being born.  I just can't imagine after all the pain everyone is feeling over Phoenix's pasing, how uplifted we are all going to be when we see new life again in the nest.  I can't wait for the next hatchling to arrive, it is going to be a long winter while we wait.

Your welcome.  If Mom and Dad Hornby are true to their routine, we'll see them back on the nest around Oct 2 for renovations starting. Then they visit on and off fixing up the nest.
