Title: Mac self help group
Post by: emc on November 10, 2009, 08:49:40 AM
A place for us mac users to help each other and pass on info too.

This is a great website with lots of info on capturing pics, etc with a mac.

I use SnapProX, but the Screentool looks interesting. And cheaper. I don't know how good it is, haven't tried it.

EMC, thanks for starting the thread for us!  I was wondering if one of us should, and here it is done for us! :eclove

Regarding the zoom feature with the new WE player.  The zoom worked normally before their change.  (Expanded whole picture.)  Now, as you have found, the picture size remains the same, but area enlarges.  Hence, the ads are out of the picture.  While this is a nice byproduct of the change, I think that WE will likely fix their player to work with browsers' zoom features.  I want them to, as I use the zoom a lot, but won't be happy to see the ads once again. :nope  I had checked both with Safari and Firefox, and they both are doing the same thing.

I also noticed that some people using pc's were also having the problem with their % enlarge feature according to the reports in ning trouble reporting area.

BTW  Now that WE is broadcasting the Djuma drives on Justin.tv, I checked the view there.  The zoom feature works as always!  Odd.  And there are a lot fewer ads on the screen as I recall.

Agreed, EMC.  At least the no zoom lemon, is our no ad lemonade.

In order to move the ads lower, I did what was suggested and zoomed in on my Mac.  It put them just below the cam screen, so that works fine on my laptop.  Thanks for the idea.  :eclove

Yesterday the colon ":" disappeared from my laptop's keyboard!  When I tried to use it, it showed as a dash (-) on the screen and in my work!  That was so very odd.  It is working properly today.  Has anyone else on had this happen? :question

I am on a MacBook, OSX 10.5.8.  I was working titling screen caps on my desktop and saving to my pictures file.  My photo title times look like this:  "12-00"  instead of this "12:00".

I did not restart my computer after it happened.  Weird.  :Jaisigh

I seem to recall this happened to someone else sometime???

LOL, had to change parens around the colon to quotes, forum made it look like this: (:)

guess I will have to find the option to not translate certain things to smileys......

Yes, Luv, it happens to me when I'm typing a title or the time in the "save" feature in the word-processor at times.  It substitutes the "-" for the colon.  I don't know why. :eceek

I find that at photobucket especially while naming things.  Titles seem to be particularly tricky.

you could use 1300hours, using the 24hour clock works well for things like that, or you could use 1_00pm.  underscore will work, I think - but dashes won't for most file names.

File names can be a bit picky about what characters are allowed.

In the Reply box there is list of Additional Options under the smilie box.  Expand the list and tick the box that says Don't use smilieys.  That will apply only to the post you are making and prevent the software translating your characters into smilies.  But it will also mean you can't post any real smilies you wanted to in that post.  :biggrin6

Does anyone know how to make clickable pictures using a Mac?   Boonibarb and BBE explained how to do it using a PC in the Technical Forum, and it also would be nice if Mac users could do it, too.   :nod2

I  use Flickr for my pictures.  I know where to find the URL and HTML codes.  Just need to know how to link and make a thumbnail clickable the way the PC users can with the instructions Boonibarb and BBE gave them.   :ecsmile

I think that I'll check on the Flickr Help pages and see if they can tell us how to do it.   :nod2
Title: Re: Mac self help group
Post by: cercis on November 27, 2009, 06:59:30 PM
Tiger, if you hover your cursor over one of your thumbnails in Photobucket some link codes will be displayed under it.  One is for putting a photo in email or instant message.  Another called "IMG code" is for putting the photo in a post.  Yet another called "IMG thumb" is the code for putting a clickable thumbnail in your post.  All you have to do is copy the code and paste it into your post.  If you get other links besides these, you  can customize the ones that come up for you by clicking Image Options which is displayed under the links.

To give credit where it is due - I think it was Madrona who taught me this, but it might have been BBE.   :puzzled2

If you use the 'Img code' option our forum software will resize it to keep it from scrolling our screens, but if you want us to be able to click for the larger version use the 'Img thumb' option.

Cercis, thanks for responding to my question.  I use Flickr, rather than Photobucket.  I know how to get the codes for posting, but I've never used them for doing links to anything other than within Flickr and now here (birthday cake picture).  I want to make sure that no one will have access to my photos there unless I give them permission.  We have several levels of permissions available in flickr, so I guess I could make it the 'Public" one if I park something that will be clickable there, like a puzzle.  (I'll try it out and see what happens.)   I found the "clickable image" buttons here, per your suggestion.   Thank you.    :ecsmile

Tigerlady, my Photobucket account is private.
But i can still post fotos from there, without my whole album being visible.
The b*day card for Dotwad is an example.
If you click on my card, you don*t see the rest of my fotos.
Maybe flickr is the same?
i notice when i upload fotos there, the first thing you get to choose is your privacy setting for that foto.
Maybe at that point is where you can choose who can see what?
There is also a privacy area where you can adjust the privacy for all your fotos at once.

Yes, I can do that now at Flickr, Booni.  I usually put my photos and screen caps on private there.   The way to make clickable links may be different though.  I'm going to try using the buttons here when I get back home and see how that works.  Thanks for your comments and interest in helping me.   :eclove

Hi tigerlady,

I do not believe that the font size can be changed in the chat no matter what you are using. That is why some choose to use "bold" or "caps" to help them see what they have typed. Doesn't help visually challenged people to see what others post though.  :ecnono Even some find the colored fonts helps. That would be another thing on our "wish list" for WE, I would think. I would much rather have a size option than an italics option.  :nod2 Sure wish I could tell you how!

Thanks, BV.  I have been using bold and blue, but you're right about that not helping to see other people's posts.  I'm going to ask Raptorman if he can include that request when he talks with Peter and Graham about several things he will request.

It's very nice of you to respond to my question...I hope we can find a way to enlarge the font for anyone who wants/needs to have it bigger.   :nod2

Thanks for the suggestion, EMC.  That "zoom text" option enlarged only the other text on that web cam page, but NOT the chat room text...   :eclol  It may be something that WildEarth.tv has to do, if it's even possible.

I vaguely recall someone on one the WE Chats asking about the 'size of type' and the answer was unable to enlarge. ??  Even with my PC if I click the text size - it only enlarges web or forum page type.  That, the speed it moves at and my schedule = the three reasons I am seldom on the WE Chats.  :eclol

Hi, BBE.  Raptorman suggested that I send a request to Zaplive.tv, asking that they consider addressing the type size, at least in their next version for the chat rooms.

I did send them a note, so we'll see what they say about it.

From what I can tell, there are quite a few people who are regular watchers of the WildEarth.tv live cams who find that the type is too small.

Here is the message I sent to Zaplive.tv:

"Would it be possible to enlarge the type font in the Chat Rooms you provide to those of us who watch the WildEarth.tv live cams?

Some of our regular viewers have trouble reading the posts because the type size is quite small, especially for older viewers or those who are disabled.

We have quite a few older viewers who watch the WildEarth.tv Djuma cam and the Hornby Eagle Nest Cam.

It would be wonderful if this could be addressed, at least in the next Zaplive.tv version, if not the current one.

Sincerely,

Cathy G."

I would like to learn how to make greeting cards that I can post, using pictures I take and adding words.  Do any of you who use a Mac know free sites that have the instructions, software, or whatever is needed?  I can use my Flickr photos, but don't know how to add text to them.

I have the newest version of Photoshop Elements, but haven't learned how to use it yet.  Will that allow me to do what I want?

Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated... :eclove

Tiger I don't use photoshop on the Mac, but if it has a feature to "add a text box" that would do it for you.  I use Graphic Converter (it's free) on the Mac and one click will add a text box to your picture.

Tigerlady, i don*t have a mac, but i do have flickr.
Click on the foto in flickr that you want to make into a card.
Above your foto is *add note*, * send to group*, etc.
Go to the second one from the right, the pencil *edit foto*.
This opens an application called picnik, in which you can add words & stickers & all sorts of things to turn your foto into a card.

On the mac in Appleworks, under starting points there is a choice of templates. Two of the choices are greeting card and post card. I haven't used either of these, but they should work for you I'd think. And then put a picture from your desktop or iphoto.

All this talk of flickr and getting photos to forum brings up a question I have.  I have photos in iphoto.  I can crop and enhance them.  I did that today with a photo I was going to post on the forum. When I upload from flickr, i cannot go to the iphoto library (even though it is is my Picture area, it was not clickable).  Export in iphoto did not give me a direct way to my other files or to flickr.  So, I dragged the photo to my desktop and uploaded it from there to flickr.

Does anyone know of a more efficient way to get a photo (or hopefully all my photos, way too many to drag!) from iphoto to flickr or at least accessible on my Pictures area?

Thanks for you help.  Still new to putting photos on computer and online.

I would like to find a good and easy-to-use greeting card software program for a Mac.  My MacBook Pro OS is 10.4.11.  I have a new copy of Photoshop Elements 8 and soon will open it and start learning how to use the features.  I'm not sure yet what it can do re greeting cards.

If there is a another good application you use and like, that is specifically for making greeting cards with a Mac, has frames and text, etc., please let me know.  If there is a program on a site that is free, that would be nice, but I will buy one if it does what I want.

I would like to be able to make and post things like birthday cards, holiday greetings, etc. on the forum, using my photos and/or public domain pictures.     :eclove

I looked at a software review site and also at Amazon.com...the one program that was recommended on the review site unfortunately received many bad reviews by customers at Amazon.com.   It was supposed to do many things but apparently the latest version is a big disappointment.  I wish that developers would make more software for Macs.  I love mine!

Appleworks and iworks are the same thing, depending on the version you have.

We need a new tutorial for photobucket. I thought the one we had here in the forum worked for us mac users, but it's been updated, and no longer fits our use.  I'll get to work on that. Look for it in the tech help index.

Keep looking for new software out.

To put a picture into iphoto, you have to have it on your desktop.  Can't even be moved from the pictures list, at least in my version.  So move to desktop. Import to iphoto, work on it. Export to desktop, or there is an email option for export too.  But for other uses, export to desktop, and then to other hosting site, flicker, photobucket, etc. and then post here, or whereever. It's a lot of steps if you want to enhance, change a photo.

I have iphoto 8 .

When you want to export photos from iphoto you can highlight as many in sequence as you wish, even the whole album to export at once.

You can also import  similarly in sequence from your desktop. For this, you would click the first pic, shift, and click the last one to highlight them all. This works in photobucket also to download a group.

We have discussed the zoom feature some here. Thought it might be a good idea to go into detail for anyone new.

If are using Firefox

Go to View
Drop down menu, Zoom
choices Zoom in, Zoom out, Zoom text only.

Zoom in -out changes the whole page, larger-smaller.  Zoom text only enlarges the written word on the page. (there are times when this won't work, it has to do with the coding of the web page youare looking at.)

There is also FullScreen under View
If you use it and can't figure out how to get out of it, go to the top right corner to find arrows and click there. lol

There is also another option.

Go to Window
drop down menu
Zoom
enlarges the whole page
minimize puts the page on the tool bar below (what is that called??  lol )

I have found that if I am using email, I can enlarge and bold the print using
Format
drop down menu
style

I notice tonight that Tools and View have Options for Adblock Preferences now.

View
Adblock Plus: blockable items
shows what can be blocked on that page

Tools
Adblock Plus Preferences
you can block or unblock individual sites from ads

Example: To view a site that you have to have adblock turned off/disabled ie: WildEarth.tv
Tools
Adblock Plus Preferences
Filter
Add Filter
Type in url or copy/paste
Check the enable box to the right (if it isn't already when entered)
Click OK at bottom of page

Ones that we know need ad blocker off to be able to view the cam:

Re: Adblocker

There is a very easy way to turn it off (disable it)

If Adblocker is on, you'll see a red stop sign in upper right hand corner of that page. Click and a selection comes up that will include disable Adblocker for .... site. Click that, the stop sign changes to green, all done.

The questions have been here for a long long time... sorry about taking so long to get to this part of the forum.

I upload photos directly from iphoto to flickr all the time.
iphoto does not even have to be open. The process is simpler, however, if you empty the trash in iphoto before uploading pictures on flickr. This is because even the discarded pics will show in the Finder window that you'll select your photos from.

In flickr, click "Choose photos and videos".
You get a small Finder screen.
The magic place is "Pictures > iphoto Library."

"Pictures," on my computer, appears at the bottom of the leftmost column in Finder.

Under the Pictures menu, you'll probably find any photo you have on your desktop. Don't be misled. Just keep scrolling down the menu until you find "iphoto library" and click that.
You will get another column with a bunch of years. You need to find the date you took your photo. The system makes a new folder for each day you've taken a picture!

(If you don't know the date, open iphoto and control-click the picture you want, and click "get info." The date will be somewhere in there.)

Once you have clicked on the right day of the right month of the right year, the photos of that day will appear as a list. A thumbnail of each picture appears when you click on it.

Select pictures one by one, or select a group of them, as you need.

Then click on "open" (or hit the "return" key). The selected pictures are now on the list to download on flickr.

You can click "add more" and select pictures from a different date.

When you have all the pictures you want in the flickr menu, click "upload photos and videos" and you're in business.

There is a special trick for uploading videos to flickr from iphoto.

If you click on the video as I described above, all you'll get is a cover photo.

In the Finder window, you need to continue down the list of photos taken that day. At the bottom of that list you'll find "Originals" and "Thumbs". Click "Originals."  Then find your video on that list. You'll know when you have the right file, because when you click "Open" and it lands on the flickr upload list, you'll see the file size is much larger than a single photo.

Then proceed as above.

Caution! Next time you use the uploading part of flickr, it will take you to the same spot in Finder where you quit last time. If you were in "originals", this is where you'll end up - in your un-cropped and un-tweaked photos. I did a whole long posting that way once -- and wondered why my pics were looking so washed-out. (My camera tends to overexpose everything, and when that happens I fix it in iphoto before posting.)

Bless you, Wren!  That will really help me move photos I have from iPhoto to flickr.  I haven't tried to learn how to do it and now I can follow your tutorial.  Many thanks!

Emc, I really like flickr.  It has many good features.  It takes awhile to learn some of the possible things you can do because there are so many.  I keep finding new ones as I explore there and I've been using it for about five years or more.   :ecsmile   Please ask us here if you want any help with flickr.  You can try the free version first, but eventually I switched to the "Pro" version and it's well-worth the $25 per year cost.   :nod2

Can someone please list the directions to put a picture in the Avatar box that I can print? I have tried a couple of things, but alas, to no avail. I always end up with the blue question mark...a.r.g.h.h!! Also, where do I get the pictures? When I try to get one from my computer, all I get is the jpg.(and a number), no pucture. Frustrating. I have a MAC powerbook, running OS X 10.5.8.

Thanks...Guess I'll know if whatever I get works, when I see a picture on my profile.

We'll work on instructions for avatars (tutorial).  Meanwhile: to have a picture show up, you need to have the picture either on your desktop or in a server like photobucket, tiny pic, etc.( sorry, can't remember right now, but will look into it today.) We have a tutorial on photobucket and others here in this section.

cawinecruzer:  sorry it took me so long, but here are the directions.  1 Caveat,  I couldn't test it out or loose what I have. So if your picture in the Pictures doesn't work, move the picture to the Desktop and try again. Let me know how it goes, please.

How to  Get an Avatar

Go to Profile at the top of the page. It will take you to your own profile.
Choose Forum Profile Information from list on left side of screen.
You can choose to Upload My Own Picture, click that button,
Browse is on your right, click that
If you are on a Mac, have the picture you want either in Pictures, or Desktop and scroll to see the one you want.  Click it  and it will load unless it is too big.

Don't forget to go to the bottom of the page and click  Change Profile now it is saved. :)

emc (Beth),

OK, I tried your directions, but to no avail. Took a picture from my 'Pictures' folder. Everything looked OK, and it showed the name of the picture (grapes.jpg), but no picture. I thought that was how it was supposed to go, so I clicked the change profile button at the bottom of the page. Looked like it was going to work, then I got a "Session Failure" and  "Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again. " did that, but when I tried logging out, got the same message. I'm at my wits end with this. Am about ready to try removing myself from the "system" altogether and starting over...assuming I can get out of the Session Verification loop. It is about as frustrating as calling some state office and getting into the phone loop. I'll give  it another go later today. Have to go teach the munchkins a little math and English. Thanks, I'll  keep you posted.

Cawinecruzer:  Would you put the pic on your desktop and try that way, please.  I'm sorry my memory is foggy on that part, lol, and wasn't able to experiment further.
That may be it.  If so, let me know, and I'll change the tutorial.
You may indeed need to reboot first..   :mhihi
The avatar size wanted is 65 x 65.  You can set this size when you move it from pictures to desktop.

cawinecruzer:  I just read where another person reduced the size of their photo and it loaded for them.  In Iphoto you can export and request a size. Choose small or 65 x 65

Try again and let me know. Other wise I'll get one of our guru's over here to help out. lol

I still can NOT SEND a PM.  I can RECEIVE them.  I DID notify chatango, but they may never answer me.  Does anyone know how to correct this?  P.S.  I have a MAC if that makes any difference.

This was posted in Tech help.  Can someone help this person with PM's in the Chat? thanks

Mac Malware alert - a good friend sent me this warning about a new serious problem that is making the rounds in the Mac-users community.

There aren't many malware or viruses that have been created to infect Macs, so most people aren't prepared for something like this one.  It's called MACDefender...

Here is the link that explains what to look for and how to avoid it:

Welcome Bluewing to the forum and to our macworld.  :mhihi

Sorry Bluewing, I haven't figured out how to post a link or pic on chat, using a mac.  Maybe someone else knows. I have put in a link by manually typing it. Wonder if that can be done with a pic. Just type the url you see instead of copy/ paste. Tedious, I know... :ecsad

Birdvoyer mentions adding a space after the copy/paste before hitting return/enter. Maybe that will make a difference?  :mconfused

Thank you emc for the warm welcome and advice. I gave it a try with the space and it doesn't work either. I think it may be a something to do with the firefox or safari program on the mac. I appreciate your help and I guess I will do the "long hand method" if I want to post a link. Thanks again .Bluewing4 ( having lots of fun here though)

Bluewing, do you use photobucket, flickr or other photo storage program? I know that you must use one of these or something similar to share/post pictures in the chat.

I am sending a PM to luvthebirds to alert her to this issue. She has Mac, iPad andiPhone and seems able to figure these things out easily. Perhaps she can help you.

chat just might not be mac friendly.     :sad

I am very seldom in the chatango chatroom.  (makes me too dizzy, even with the colors off setting  :sad)
However, I will try to stop by there soon and attempt to post a link and a photo to see if I have problems with that as others are.  If I am successful, I will note what I did in this thread.  If not, I will at least say what I tried. Hope I can help Bluewing.

Well, I stopped by the chat and did a little test.
I copied a url and posted in the chat.  Link worked fine.  Just did a regular copy and pasted in to the chat talk box.
As far as getting a photo to post in the chat.  I was able to post a url and the link did work to go to the photo on flickr.  (just used grab the url.  doesn't seem to work with grab html or bb code)
However, I was not able to see how to post the photo so that the image would be in the chat.  Someone in the chat said that she uses Photobucket and posts pix in the chat by choosing "Direct Link".  So, for people on photobucket, that seems pretty straightforward.  I could not find anything in the flickr sharing options that sounded like that.  :ecsad  I suppose there may be some flickr help info available on the flickr website.  I will take a look.  I don't think the issue is Mac Related.  It may instead have to do with where your photo resides and whether there is an option that gets the photo in the chat.

ETA:  I didn't find an answer in the help area of flickr.  I submitted the question of how to post a photo in the chatango chat to flickr support.  We will see what, if anything, I get back.

EMC, Last night I used my macbook pro.  I would not be able to do it with iphone/ipad as the chat is not accessible in skyfire.  The only way I think I could get the chat would be to use the splashtop app, as it is essentially my computer on an ipad monitor.  But I suspect the actions would be seen as from my macbook.  Using the Justin tv app I can copy and paste a link into the chat (on Justin).  I just did that with my iphone, then checked justin website on my macbook and my post is fine and link works.

fwiw On iphone/ipad, I tend to use Justin app quite a bit, followed by Skyfire at WE site or Skyfire at ustream or justin websites.  It is nice to have some options!  :ecsmile Now, if only we were on the ustream app.....  but the only WE cam currently available on the ustream app is Pete's Pond.  The others are listed, but not viewable in the app.  :sad

HI.
I am part of a group that uses a chatango chat room (next
to our Eagle webcam). The chat has the capability of having
people post photos in the chat for people to view. I could
not find a way to do this with flickr. i saw that I can
post a link which, when clicked, would take the use to my
photo on flickr. That worked fine to get someone to my
photostream, but not to view the photo in the chat room.
And the bb code and html codes did not work for this
purpose. Apparently, for people who use photobucket, there
is a "Direct Link" option for sharing that gets their photos
into the chat. Is there a similar sharing option on flickr?
If not, can it be added? The chat room where people can
post the photos is located
here:www.hornbyeagles.com/chatpage_wildearth.htm

Thank you for your help.

~ snip I removed my email, IP etc that was here ~

Perhaps some Flckr users may want to post a request for the capability to post a photo in the chat in the forum they suggested.
I do not think the problem is unique to mac users; birdvoyer has the same problem using a PC.  Those of you who frequent the chat may want to ask if anyone is able to post using Flickr.

still haven't figured out how to post an image either from iphoto or from flickr - can only post the link it seems

Nan, if you can post a link, you can make it an image by surrounding the link with the second from left icon to show the image, or third from left, for clickable image.

Above posting box, are icons:
You tube, show image, clickable image --- in that order. You can click on the icon first, then insert the link in between; or post link, highlight it, then click on the icon.

Hope that helps, let us know.  :ecsmile

Ok, I missed the beginning of this discussion, but here's how I post photos directly from flickr to the chat from my Mac laptop:

Go to your photo's LARGE size, but the smallest of the large sizes. If the photo is bigger than the screen, it will not post (if you see some blue sliders on the side or bottom, go to a smaller size).

(If you don't know how to access the bigger sizes, let me know.)

Control-click on the photo (is that a right-click on a mouse? I just use the touch pad).
Select "Copy image address"

Go back to Chatango. Paste (apple key + v) the link into the chat.
That's it.
I prefer flickr to Photobucket because you can post the photos in original size on the forum. But the originals will not post directly on the chat.

After much trial and error, and much gnashing of teeth, I finally found a good way to be able to post photos and word games on the ONZ forum, using a Mac, is to do the following:

1.  Use Preview in iPhoto to create a jpg image.

2.  Upload it to flickr.

3.  Access and Copy the BBC code.

4.  Paste the BBC code into the appropriate forum thread

click here for my practice post (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=4.msg157019#msg157019)...
