Title: Nest 32 - Ford Cove - 2016- 2017 season
Post by: winterwren on April 25, 2017, 07:05:02 PM

This is the topic for Nest 32 and its neighbourhood and all the critters therein.

Nest 32 is very old and perched atop a small bluff near Ford Cove harbour. In 2013 the eagles moved to a different nest, a few hundred feet further inland. They used that new nest again in 2014, but in 2015 they returned to their old site in that huge conical fir tree that we can see from the beach. They had two eaglets there.
Last year the area was occupied but by mid-July I could see no sign that the nest was occupied. I never heard any eaglet sounds in the area. It is possible that this pair took a break last year.

I'm not sure how far toward Shingle Spit this territory extends, but this eagle pair seems to own Ford Cove Harbour. The rock in the picture here is just a little further north. At high tide, the water surrounds it.
Canada Geese nest on that rock every year.
The nest depression is just in front of the smaller goose (the male is usually larger than the female).
I was doing my monthly seabird count when I took this picture.

Now I'm really kicking myself for not looking down to the rock from the trail, a small detour I usually make.
Instead I walked straight to my second counting station, from which I could see birds all the way to Windy Point.

While I was there, I heard loud calls from Canada Geese. I wondered if some more had landed. They sounded pretty excited.

On the return I sought to correct my oversight... I took a detour to a place where I can peek around a tree and look at the top of the tall rock, right at the nest.
And I saw... This!

The nest depression is right under the eagle...

I've been spotted, or else the purpose of the visit is fulfilled. The geese are honking their protest again too.

Whatever was in that nest... it's gone. Just a few lining feathers still there.

The Ford Cove nest has been looking very empty, no evidence of new branches or poop shots or other traces of occupancy.

This is a view from the water, taken last week.

There was an adult eagle flying nearby, and again on my return a couple of hours later, but nobody visible on the nest. This pair has had a different nest, further back in the woods; I wonder if they are using it again.

We went for a walk between downpours along the path from the parking lot of Mt. Geoffrey Escarpment Park past Ford Cove & along high above the water to the waterfall bridge & back on this day.
My walking buddy spotted this Eagle perched VERY close to where we were walking!
i wouldn*t have noticed had he not pointed this one out to me.
It had been absolutely bucketing down all morning.
Look how wet this Eagle*s nape feathers are!
Looking down at the beach, where it turned out other Eagles were too.
We could hear one female gulling in the Trees higher up the cliff right over our heads.
Not sure how many Eagles were there but at least six.

He had a LOT of patience with me being so close!
We were eye to eye between the Trees, pretty much at the same level.
It would be a surprise to this Eagle for us to suddenly appear at his Tree level.

This Eagle must have been preening.
Note the wet down feather on the tip of the beak.

This individual was down on the beach, on top of very large rocks covered in seaweed that would be underwater at high tide, which it wasn*t.
As i was walking i saw two Eagles land out of sight behind a big rock down on the beach.
This one was perched nearby.
So i was thinking maybe a carcass on the beach out of sight?

These Eagles were down on the rocks, closer to where, i believe, there is a carcass, perhaps of that poor emaciated Sea Lion mishi spotted at Heron Rocks that day.
Not the best fotos.
It was very dark & my ISO is super high.

Well, I still don't know what the  Ford Cove eagles are up to this year, but one thing is for sure... They're not using Nest 32.

There is some grass growing in it!
We saw this a few years back also, when they were using a second nest further back in the woods.
Click on the picture to see that green grass even better.

Early this morning, heading for work in this territory, I'm pretty sure I was hearing screeps!
Obviously not from Nest 32, which, as I posted above, is still looking deserted.

The sound seemed to come from the other direction, across the bay, on the escarpment maybe?
Did the Ford Cove eagles move that far, or is this a new territory?

The plot thickens!

I asked the nest neighbours, and sure enough, there is a nest on the escarpment. The Ford Cove pair seems to have moved there, and is staging its habitual attacks on the backyard ducks from this new location.

Actually there was a nest in that area a number of years ago; not sure if it was the same pair or territory.

For sure at least one eaglet there. Reportedly the eagles have been busy.

Last week I went walking at the top of the escarpment, in an area where the eagles used to nest. I did not find anything. I figured that maybe the eaglet had already fledged; the Ford Cove pair is usually among the first to complete their nesting cycle.

This morning, coming in to work at some ungodly hour again, I heard screeps from the escarpment! The screeps picked up in volume and frequency: the characteristic sound of an eaglet when a food drop is coming in.

I soon spotted the incoming adult eagle. He or she was headed further west than the old nest used to be. Is this a perch that a fledgling is using, or is that the new nest? Certainly the tree where the eagle landed is enormous, rising above most of the others.
The other thing is... After the adult eagle landed, then promptly took off again, there were still some screeps, softer... If the eaglet was busy eating by then...  was this another eaglet, a second one?

i went down to Ford Cove on this evening for my yearly treat of fish & chips!
i ate where i could watch the water, hoping to catch some Whales going by.
No luck, but it was a lovely evening.
i sure could hear an Eaglet calling from the escarpment the whole time.
On my way back to the car i was eyeballing the Trees of the area, hoping to spot the Nest or maybe even the Eaglet.
At one point i thought i could see a tiny white head.
i zoomed in & sure enough, an adult Eagle, likely one of the parents, in the corner of the bay there.
i never managed to see the Eaglet or the Nest, unfortunately.

New nest!  :hearts2

Just where I had seen the food drop...
The nest is just above eye level, over the rim of the bluff, right above the northwest corner of Ford Cove.
One eaglet on a branch near the nest.
July 19, 10:04 am. Nest is in the lower right corner of the photo. Click to enlarge.

Definitely a new nest, still small.

The eaglet did a lot of shuffling around, especially when an adult was sighted, but stayed put on that same branch.  I spent a while there, looking for signs of a second eaglet but I think this is the only one.
