Title: Hornby Ground Observations that Aren't Eagle Related - 2016-2017
Post by: boonibarb on October 17, 2016, 09:17:39 AM

Hornby has SUCH a wide variety of wild life.
i LOVE living here.
The variety changes with the time of year, there is always something to look forward to.
So, this is the topic for those sightings that we want to show you that don*t fit under the various Eagle territory Eagle behaviour observations!

Last year*s topic can be found here (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1609.msg167333#msg167333), & there you will find the link to the previous season*s topic as well.

Yesterday i was lucky to be outside at the right time to hear distant honking!
i have learned now that when i hear sounds like this, LOOK UP!
Sure enough there was a big flock of honking Birds flying over, heading south!
i could hear them long before i could see them.
There wasn*t time to run & grab my camera.
i was viewing them against the dull white sky, but i am pretty sure i saw the dark wing tips of Snow Geese!

(Not my foto)

Look at these cool things i found washed up to the high tide line on Tribune Bay today!
i asked Jackie Hildering/The Marine Detective (https://themarinedetective.com/) what they are.
& she has already responded!
Opalescent squid (Loligo opalescens) eggs.
They need to be kept wet to survive.
Some kind of egg sacs?
Are they still alive?
Sure hope so.
They were like squishy thick finger sausages.
You can see little white beings inside the sausages.

Spotted these two in lovely sunset light in the Tree across the road from me last evening.
The larger male on the right is preening the smaller female on the left.
She is making interesting vocalizations that seem to indicate please preen me some more!

There is a very good birder who comes to visit Hornby a few times a year; each time, he takes a walk around Helliwell Park and spots more bird species than anyone else.
Last year at about this time, this man phoned me to say that he had seen a Snow Bunting in Helliwell (and a Rock Sandpiper too) and that I should go and try for a photo.
The next day I walked to St John's Point, where he had seen his two rare birds. I did not see the Snow Bunting but did find and photograph three new birds (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1620.msg168915#msg168915).

Almost a year later...
On a rare sunny day in the middle of monsoons, I decided that a walk to Helliwell would be great medicine. It was at the back of my mind to keep an eye for those grassland migrant birds, and also for any Rock Sandpipers among the shore birds.

Just west of St John's Point, I saw what looked like a sparrow land low on a tree. I'm trying to learn my sparrows (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1661.msg175966#msg175966), so I took a closer look. Just the bird's head was showing, so what it was dawned on me very, very gradually.

Finally it came out in the open!
A Snow Bunting. A year later I finally found one.

Right after that photo, the Snow Bunting flew back down to an area of long grasses. I just sat down by the path, enjoying the sun and hoping that beautiful bird would eventually come out to where I could watch again.

And sure enough.
Here it is... Walking in a weird shuffling way, almost on its elbows. I read later that this is normal behaviour and characteristic of that bird.

I watched it for a long time, chomping at grass stems... So not after seeds, maybe some insects overwintering inside hollow stems? Look again how it's sitting right down on the ground.

Great photos and info Wren. I can see why you might think it was a sparrow. If I had come across it on the ground like that I would likely think it was an injured sparrow, unable to walk properly. Very interesting.

Wow, we had SUN today!
i forgot what it was like to have that.
We went for a walk along Tribune Bay.
The tide was right up to the logs so we had to walk on the grass.
There are always Scoters out there.
i poked my camera in their direction not expecting much as it was into the Sun, but got not too bad of a foto!

Looks like Hawthorn berries... Not the native Black Hawthorn but the European kind, which has naturalized in BC; there is quite a bit along the shoreline where you were I think.

Today i was out in the yard pulling grass out of my garden before it takes over & i heard this tap-tap-tap.
It sounded like a Chickadee opening a Sunflower seed.
i was focused on what i was doing but finally looked up to see what was causing this sound & i spotted this Bird!
It looked like they were eating from a suet feeder but i don*t hang a suet feeder any more.  :puzzled2
What the heck?
My hands were dirty but i grabbed my camera anyway.

i call this Tree a Black Willow.
When the pussies come out, they are black & quite unusual.
When the Bird had left, i looked closely at the Tree & there were these designs on all the branches at about the same level!
This Bird has been busy!
You can see the area around the holes is wet compared to higher up on the branch.

Maybe my Anna*s Hummingbirds will have something else to eat.
i saw one poking into flowering Red Currant flowers already.

What a sweet little bird - and pretty too.  :eclove Thank you for picking up the camera with your dirty hands Booni  :eceek- I hope it is easily wiped clean again. The pecking speed is so fast that I cant tell if s/he is actually eating anything, or just searching for bugs or something, but clearly the sap is coming out onto the bark.  I hope all those holes wont damage the  shrub. When  the bird pauses, do you see any tongue? I would expect (but have no knowledge)  :puzzled2 from the name sapsucker, that s/he would be using tongue, but didnt see that. Anyway a dear little thing,  :nod2 and thanks for sharing. :heart

Today we had a Polar Bear Swim!
Usually it is held at Grassy Point & you can hear it from the cam, but today it was WAY too windy & wavy, so it was moved to Sandpiper Beach instead.
This crowd includes watchers, Hornby Island Fire Department & soon-to-be-swimmers.
The bonfire is already lit.

i*ve been seeing these strange Bird shapes from the distance, & i can tell by the shape they are something different than i usually see.
This is uphill from Little Tribune Bay, next to the Winery there & the Nursery.

Two days later, & now there are TWO strange shapes, in pretty much the same area again.

january 9 2017 13:19 - pair of Red-tailed Hawks

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/381/32295294205_a9a612aa80_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/RcPPPk)

This is the one in the uppermost branch.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/579/32175630361_a6861dbba2_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/R2fvVB)

This is the one in the lower down branch.
Of course i am spotted, even though i am quite far away.
Sometimes i just roll down my window & photograph from inside, but there were branches in the way so i took a chance & got out.
Of course i am spotted right away.
i was just focusing when they flapped their wings like as if to leave & i thought that was it, i wasn*t going to get another foto, but the upper Hawk had flown off & startled the lower down one who thought they should leave too, but phew, changed their mind!

This one gave me a bit of a chance before taking off too!
Thank you!
Yesterday & today, these shapes are still in the Trees in that area when i drive past.

Oh!
i don*t see the red tail?
Except in that one foto that was dark that i lightened?
i sure don*t know my Hawks.
This ties in with a cry i heard the day i started spotting these, though.
We had gone down to Little Tribune Bay to document a dead Sea Lion reported there but it was super windy & the tide was already too high to walk the beach.
We walked along the road to the main road instead.
i was looking towards Beulah Creek, beside this road, when i heard the cry of a Red-tailed Hawk!
Then this gigantic Bird that had been perched down in the gully of the Creek flew off!

We went down to Phipps Point to get out of the wind for a walk on this stormy day.
Just in time, the rain stopped, there was a titch of Sun & even a rainbow!
These lovely Mergansers were against the brown/green water stirred up by the storm.

i tend to look at the Tree tops everywhere i go.
This Tree had something tiny that looked like a Bird but could also have been a part of the branch.
But from the distance i was thinking Bird, & sure enough, it was!
It was getting late, it was windy & the light was dull, usually i try to photograph from the car so as to not scare away the Bird but this little one took zero notice of me.

Three days later & the Owl is back!
This time the alarming of the Robins caught my ear so i went looking.
This appears to be the same individual.
Looking down again, rather than into the Robins* Nests.
i was reading about how the markings on their faces are each very different between individuals.
Someone on Hornby reported yesterday seeing a Barred Owl carrying a Snake twice, so they believe they have hatchlings now.
It doesn*t seem as though my nesting box got used this year, darnit.

We used to have larger variety of Owls on Hornby.
Human development made it easy for Barred Owls to move west & occupy the territory that humans occupy.
Other Owls didn*t cope so well.
Some people call Barred Owls invasive, but it is humans that are invasive.

i was treated to another sighting of the beautiful Barred Owl!
The Robins alert me every time.
The Owl always seems more interested in the ground than in bothering the Robins* Nests.
The first foto is skewed, so please click on it to see it properly.

I finally have a tenant in the beautiful bird house that Sandor gave me a few years ago. It had been empty all this time.

And now... A wren. A House Wren.
Like the one across the street two years ago, he's trying to get an overly-long stick into a small opening.
Unless the one across the street, he was unsuccessful; he dropped three sticks in a row, each time coming back with another one just like it.

May 8, 5:50 pm
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4168/34414669861_bb97938dbd_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4168/34414669861_6fa27a6673_k.jpg)

Finally made it into the house a couple of times, but without a stick. Here I caught him on the exit.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4185/34414673421_916bb69ee5_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4185/34414673421_53f28f81bc_k.jpg)

I write 'him', because as far as I know, with wrens it's the males who perch in prominent places and make all the noise.
This seems to be a favoured perch right near the nest box.

He also made circuits around the shop, stopping to catch bugs in my willow stash.

Gosh Wren - I havent seen one of those dear little birds since I was a child. There used to be many around our home back then. I think they are the cutest and most enchanting birds on the face of the earth! I hope  they have a successful nesting season in your  charming little house.  Lucky you!

We have Carolina Wrens here and the male perches on a light outside our back door every spring and sings his heart out to bring in a mate.   They don't usually nest in that spot but I do see fledgers so they nest somewhere nearby.  In the meantime I get to listen to him sing and sing and sing!!

Last year i went for a walk on Shingle Spit & i found this bizarre thing that seemed to be made of sand yet the shape was so amazing & thin.
i came to the conclusion that it was a piece of that paint stuff that you paint on that has sand or something in it for traction on boats.
i thought maybe the shape & all it was from a boat, maybe at the base of a vent pipe of some sort.
Then i saw this at our Natural History Center & realized what it was!
How amazing is this?

So i went to Shingle Spit again to see if maybe i would find another piece, since it is the same time of year as last year when i found one.
i found one almost right away!
Or a piece of one anyway.
Apparently the eggs are embedded in with the sand.
Now i wish i had photographed the other side as well.
i think it was just sand & the eggs were already hatched.

We went for a walk in the woods along the marsh in Strachan Valley.
There are nesting boxes for Wood Ducks & i wondered if we*d see any activity.
We didn*t, but a flash of yellow in the tall grasses & cat tails of the marsh caught my eye!
Yellow is very unusual around here.
So who the heck could this be?
They were making a lovely call, & the yellow made them a bit easier to find with my eye & then my camera.
Wow!
What a lovely Bird, one i have never seen & never knew we had here.

i have a big Cedar Tree in the back of my yard that has a cut mark partway up then a bare spot where the bark has been pulled away.
The First Nations People did this to harvest Cedar bark without harming the Tree.
A few years back, Pacific-slope Flycatchers nested in this cut!
They also nested under the eaves of my house, successfully!
The fabulous footage i got of them begins here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1245.msg135292#msg135292)
This may have been their second Nest?
Well, since then, there have been a few Nest starts but no nesting that i was able to observe in the following years.
This Nest on the Cedar had deteriorated & was sort of dripping down the Tree.
Then one day i went out there & the Nest looked brand new again!
Was i mis-remembering or imagining things?
It was in perfect shape again.
Apparently the male makes several Nest in hope of the female*s approval.
On another day i swear i could see tail feathers going up the back of the Nest & the Tree.
i zoomed in & sure enough, they are back!  :heart

On our drive down the mountain from the marsh i had my windows open & heard the alarm calls & fluttering of Birds!
i also noticed wings out of the corner of my eye.
i backed up & it was a Hawk with small Birds freaking out around them!
i was so busy staring at the Hawk, i never noticed the poor fledgling in their foot.

i*d gotten a Wildlife Rescue call about young Crows unable to fly, down on the ground at Grassy Point.
i posted about them here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1705.msg179245#msg179245)
i wanted to get down there & check on them & see them for myself!
i have heard that they have blue eyes & i wanted to see this.
i could hear two calling as soon as i parked.
One was standing in a driveway & the owner was expected in a big truck soon.
So i wanted to keep an eye on the little one as well as get some fotos.

i finally had to pick them up & move them to the shade, with the adult Crows dive-bombing my head!
i sure hope these sweeties made it into the air!

We were checking out the Nest #21 Helliwell Eagle Nest for Eaglets when i heard a strange Bird call & noticed movement nearby!
A Wren of some sort is nesting in this little box!
i thought maybe Marsh Wren, since the Marsh is nearby, but i think the tail is too long for that or for the Pacific or Winter Wren.
Bewick*s Wren or House Wren maybe?
She was feeding the nestlings steadily, looks like a Spider here.

i kept peeking at the Pacific-slope Flycatcher Nest & every time i looked at the foto there was that lovely big black eye looking right at me from the Nest.
Then suddenly every time i looked no one was there.
i did a quick peek with the close up of my camera, down into the Nest.
Woohoooooo!
Looks like three little ones in there.

i was reading on my bench in my garden, which i never get to do, & i noticed two flashes of bright yellow over my head in the Cedars!
Yellow is a bit unusual to see, around here, so it is very noticeable.
When i went back to reading, i heard a different call over my head, & it was a persistant call.
This Bird was flying from branch to branch, eyeballing me & making this call.
i don*t know if i was in her territory, or if she had a Nest nearby or what.
The other flash of yellow also had some red, which helped me figure out who these two visitors were!

(Most of the fotos are posting skewed, grrrrr...., so please click them to see them properly.

Back to June 28...
I was watching a family of Townsend's Warblers in the tall firs by my house. They were foraging quite low in the trees, and there were lot of little 'chip' calls to help me find them.

A bug fell from a branch to the ground.
A little ball of fluff followed: a tiny little bird.

This little fellow here. Now laboriously climbing around.

A parent delivered some food, confirming that this is one of the Townsend's Warbler fledglings. This one barely has any flight feathers. Short flights from branch to branch seemed fine, but to return aloft from the ground?
Best to just walk.
Now up on a twig by my net fence for a break.

Back in the sun, easier task for the photographer. Big rubbery gape, no tail to speak of, short little flight feathers; the beginnings of a Townsend's Warbler's markings on the cheeks. I like best the downy bits sticking out from the head.  :eclove

Adult Townsend's Warbler, watching that little fledgling from above.

They had 2 or 3 more fledglings to feed and soon moved on further down the yard.
The little one on the ground followed as well as possible... Then gave up and took a nap.

I kept an eye out. The next series of photos is through a window. It took almost half an hour for Mom to come back, but then there were a series of feedings.

Just a few seconds later, another feeding.

Townsend's Warblers, July 28, 1:13 pm
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4317/36016132716_aff0afa607_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4317/36016132716_f906a7ab3b_k.jpg)

She seems to have two bites for him at each feeding.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4311/35248749613_639f45fb10_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4311/35248749613_377742d800_k.jpg)

After this, the fledgling started moving around again so I felt a lot better about the situation. Eventually he found his way to a thicket where he was able to perch off the ground, out of view of predators. His Mom found him with location calls and delivered food regularly. That's where I left them.

Spotted this gigantic Slug when i was watering a friend*s flower pots for her.
These are called Banana Slugs.
Sometimes they have big black spots on them.

People call me now, when they see interesting Nature sightings, which i just love.
This Hornby neighbour wrote to me saying she had a Hutton*s Vireo nesting on her house, & wasn*t that odd, had i ever heard of such a thing?
Well, i sure hadn*t.
i*ve never even seen a Hutton*s Vireo, that i am aware of.
When i looked them up, i wondered if she might actually be seeing a Pacific-slope Flycatcher!
We definitely have those here, & i have had them nesting under the eaves of my house & on a Tree in my yard.
My album of these Birds nesting has three pages & can be seen here. (https://flic.kr/s/aHsjJav3HQ)
i asked if i might come photograph & she was quite eager for me to do so.
She described that the Nest was on top of a light, & how she had the area yellow-taped off so that no one would scare them away.
She also warned me that i might need to be patient, as the mother spent good lengths of time off the Nest.
Well, when it comes to photographing Birds at least, patience i have.
It turned out to be a bit of a dark rainy day, but it wasn*t raining too much when i got there.
The dark day meant not the best conditions for photographing such fast small Birds, but i wanted to see who we had here.
i waited only a short while, & the whole time i could hear the tiny familiar calls of who i thought were Pacific-slope Flycatchers.
After a bit, one landed on a branch near the Nest, eyeballed me, then landed on the metal roof above the Nest & then onto the Nest.
This routine was repeated every visit, only once she figured out i was okay, she skipped the Tree & went straight to the roof, then Nest.
So this gave me a heads up of when to be ready to catch a foto.
These Birds are very fast, & you need to be quick on the shutter button to catch them!
i saw her dip down into the Nest, but it was so fast, i figured she was just checking, but in this foto you can see she has at least one dark Insect in her beak, so there must be at least one hatchling!
They usually lay three eggs.

So fast, i missed the feeding.
You can see her beak is empty now.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4323/36089730585_d6e8b31234_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WZ8iye)

After that she did a quick spell of either incubating &/or brooding who is in the Nest.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4302/35280763223_9153013bfa_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/VKD8K6)

Perhaps she is scootching her feet, as we see the Eagles do as they settle into the Nest.

On a different day, we are out on the water in front of this same area where we see Seal pups with their mothers.
This is what a Seal pup should look like.
An over stuffed sausage.

i had gotten a HEART call about fledgling Crows down on the ground in a dangerous spot at Grassy Point!
The fotos taken by this observer are posted here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1705.msg179245#msg179245)
My own fotos & story when i go check out the fledgling Crows can be found here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1685.msg179692#msg179692)
So, as i was walking around, checking out the scene, i discovered that one of the fledglings had been hit by a car already.  :ecsad
i found them on the road & didn*t have the heart to just leave them there in the hot Sun.
The adult Crows sure made a fuss when i picked him up & put him in my car.
i wanted to photograph the beautiful details of this lovely young Bird whose life was wasted.
Goofy youngster was probably just standing there in the road & someone somehow just didn*t notice.  :mgritted
Here are some of the fotos i took of the youngster.
i donated the body to our Natural History Center to use as a specimen, but our taxidermist found them to be too deteriorated or damaged to use, unfortunately.
Look at all the fabulous wing feathers, still growing out of their sheaths.
Notice the rubbery commissure that gives away that this is a young Bird.
The tiles are a foot square, for size comparison.

i was sitting outside at a place that still has a small pond, even in this drought.
When you sit still for a while, there is a steady flow of Birds of all different kinds that i don*t necessarily get to see elsewhere.
But they are tough to get fotos of!
They don*t stay in one place for long!
They go from shadow into full Sun, so i keep needing to change my settings.
i can see them with my eye but then can*t find them with my camera.
So it was fun to practice & also to see who these Birds were!
These Birds come to drink & bathe in the pond.
i need something like this at my place!

i wasn*t sure how to *watch* the eclipse when you weren*t supposed to look at the Sun at all.
It was really hard not to!
i didn*t want to buy a pair of disposable glasses.
i guess i could have gone somewhere & borrowed other peoples*.
But it was early & i had the day off & i just wanted to enjoy it at home.
i thought i might photograph my garden in the unusual light.
But it is so treed around my garden that the Sun didn*t poke over the top til well into the eclipse.
i intended to watch the whole thing online via NASA, but it was BORING!
Two people sat in chairs & yakked at each other, i never saw the Sun once.
National Geographic was the same.
i finally found a Canadian news station that just had a camera pointed at the Sun & showed it live.
i turned off the sound of all the people yakking & that was cool.
During the maximum eclipse i went out into my garden & just walked around, looking at things in the very unusual light.
It wasn*t like smokey light, it wasn*t like evening, it was very lovely light.
But i wasn*t sure what to take fotos of to show it.
The garden was still in shadow.
Then i saw this idea on facebook to use a colander to watch the eclipse!
i wish i had known this sooner, i would have somehow documented the whole progress of the eclipse this way!
This first foto is about 14 minutes after the maximum coverage that we got, & you can see that in the shadows cast by the colander holes.

Almost half an hour later & i finally have some Sun in my yard i can play with.
& you can see now that the Moon has almost uncovered the Sun.
It never really got dark here, just kind of dim & lovely & very very quiet, which was really cool.

I love your photos Booni!  The colander worked for me too!  And I also used my binoculars, pointing them at the sun and looking at the sunlight through the lens cast on the shadow of me on the wall.  Very cool. I took lots of photos of the shadows of my tree on the garage door and the ground, and a video too that showed all the half-sun shapes moving!  Magical!  It was a very soft light, a great way to describe that reduced sunshine.... not like dusk at all....  almost like my eyes were fading....  and quiet, yes!  A lovely description!   Thanks for sharing! :eclove

Our next stop was Chrome Island & the Lighthouse Station!
The woman working there seemed happy to give us a tour.
It was hot hot hot.
While they were talking about the petroglyphs there, i was peeking over the ledge at the Cormorants down on the cliff.

In the bright hot Sun it wasn*t the best time to take fotos of the fabulous petroglyphs there.
But there were two that kept catching my eye that i don*t remember seeing the last two times i was here.
They look like Humpback Whales!

i tried fiddling in my foto settings to bring out the contrast or something, but nothing worked.
So i traced the line of the petroglyph to make it stand out a bit more.

Migrations time!

2 days ago, over Nash Bank, a shallow prolongation of Dunlop Point, several hundred Common Murres in all plumages, from worn breeding adults to moulting adults to juveniles.
Here's a small part of the flock. The gull is an immature California Gull.

Nash Bank, September 6, 4:40 pm
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4399/37078279955_f61bcf1aa8_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4399/37078279955_d57d2f66f4_k.jpg)

Here a Heermann's Gull, with the bright red bill snuck into the shot without my knowing.  I had been looking for these beauties; we only see them at migration time, and this has been a good year of sightings so far.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4395/36264595593_bf3bc274be_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4395/36264595593_bf3bc274be_b.jpg)

Here are two adults, still in breeding plumage, but it's a paler brown, worn by a summer of travels.
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4358/36907903832_c050ef17bf_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4358/36907903832_90d03cf33a_h.jpg)

I had several views of murres flapping their wings; most of the photos are blurry but all show the same weird shapes... An dinky little set of brand-new primaries with nothing at the tip! I hadn't realized that this is a moulting stop for the Murres. They would be flightless now, and dependent on the feed fish of Nash Bank for the high-energy process of growing new flight feathers.

More Murres...
This is what I think of as the Alcid posture, bill up in the air. Birds of that family are easy to spot at a distance... Swimming as if they own the world.  :eclove

September 6, 4:47 pm
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4397/37078283875_007c494fae_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4397/37078283875_376ac812d8_h.jpg)

The juveniles are the ones with a mostly white face and the elegant line curving below the eye. Winter adults will look like that too eventually. When they tip to their side to preen, they look almost all white, making identification trickier.
I think there is only one juvenile in this picture, if any, and it would be the first bird on the left. The rest are all adults in various stages of moult. One adult is fluffing up flank feathers and showing a lot of white.

Here's a nice close view of an adult with just a bit of white on the neck, and with wings tucked deep into those fluffy white flank feathers (like putting your hands in your pockets).

All summer i*ve been hearing the distinctive trilling calls of Cedar Waxwings.
i am always heading somewhere & can*t stop.
i would LOVE to get nice fotos of them.
Then one day i swore i was hearing the calls above my garden!
But the Birds seemed to have these big honking beaks like a Grosbeak, & i wasn*t seeing the familiar lovely yellow smooth colouring.
Now that i have time to examine the fotos, yes indeed, this is who they are!
Here is an adult in the lower right, but who is the stripey one?
Turns out this is what the youngsters look like!

Look at the lovely yellow tail tips on the adult, & you can see them on the fledgling to the right, too.

There is a Tree in my yard that is full of small red berries now, & this is why they are here.

i noticed these Birds in my yard that i have never seen before!
There only seemed to be two of them & they hung out together.
Noticed them over a couple of days & now they seem to be gone so maybe just passing through.
They look like Golden-crowned Sparrows but not quite.
i think perhaps they are the youngsters from this summer!
These fotos are through the window, so not that sharp.
Notice the lovely yellow on the forehead & even on the leg!

So many little birdies now, either passing through, or arriving to stay the winter, or else gathering to migrate elsewhere.

On Friday the Comox Valley birders came to visit. A treat to follow them for part of the day: out to Dunlop Point for the shore birds and a nice view of the red-billed Heermann's Gulls (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4422/36512171242_0368b82462_b.jpg), then after lunch partway around Helliwell Park; after which I had to leave and go to work.

Just after that, they saw a flock of Horned Larks! Everyone was really happy because they are rare at all times of the year here, though much more common elsewhere on the continent.

So on Saturday I took advantage of an hour of free time and went poking around in the area near St John's Point, with the 'firm plan' to find some larks. Which means I walked to shore, fell in love with the first little birdling I saw, and from that moment didn't care too much about what I saw or didn't see.

In one big thicket of pine trees, I found 9 different species of birds!
Song Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow (an adult and a juvenile), Oregon Junco,  Brown Creeper, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Hutton's Vireo and Ruby-crowned Kinglet, all flitting around.

Here are a few photos of them...
A Savannah Sparrow...

...And its almost-twin: a Hutton's Vireo, my first sighting of one. A little more drab, less contrasty, grey legs, and the bill is really different. Imagine both birds in the same tree!

A clearer view of the Hutton's Vireo but we can't see the bill here:

And then a whole lot of Savannah Sparrows in the grass. No larks, my time was up, but a really nice visit nonetheless!

So with all these little birds to look at (but no Horned Larks), I was late at my next appointment. After which I took a detour to Grassy Point, just to see what kind of a perfect boating day I had just missed.

So here I am right at the tip of Grassy Point, looking at that lovely calm water, letting the beauty take me.
And that's when I heard an unfamiliar kind of a cheep-cheep call, and three little birds landed nearby. Saying, probably, something like "Hi. You looking for someone?"  -- in Lark language.

Yeah, I know it's crazy. This sort of thing happens to me quite a bit.

Next they flew right to the flat part of the meadow, which meanwhile had filled up with picnicking families and dogs and little kids tearing around on bicycles. So here are my rare migrant birds right in the middle of the action, pecking at the grass, just flying on a little further when a kid threatens to crash into them. They had a funny kind of shuffling walk too.
Finally they got somewhere quiet enough for me to risk another set of photos without spooking them further.

You never know what you're going to find.

Catching up on fotos from this time a year ago, i found this one that really speaks of the Herring Spawn.

As does this one.
Someone down at Grassy Point had posted that they saw a boat driving right over Sea Lions there.
i*m not saying this is the result, but...
This fotos also speaks of the Herring Spawn.
