Title: Ground Observations - 2016 - 2017 Season
Post by: boonibarb on September 23, 2016, 09:01:40 AM

A new season with the Hornby Eagles is beginning!
Last season, Em(?) came back on september 21, surprising us all with her earliness.
She hung around, but there were also a few other females who tried to win Dad & his territory.
Dad was just not himself.
i think he was a bit lost without Mum!, waiting for her perhaps, & not sure what to do.
The Herring Spawn came & went, & it was a good one, & after that Dad seemed to kick in with Em & there was mating & Nest building, way past the normal season.
They seemed to be gelling as a pair finally.
You can find last year*s posts here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1604.msg167143#msg167143)

august 2, we had a powerful thunder & lightning storm come through, such as i have never experienced in my whole life.
At 4:24 am, the cam went dark & came back by itself 20 minutes later, but we no longer had sound from the mic or the ability to move the camera via the ptz.
The system is in for checking & repair & we are hoping to get it all back again, as this could be an interesting season for watching Dad & Em!

Good summary of the situation Booni. I am looking forward to a rewarding year for the eagles and all of their fans. Hopefully we will have one or more nestlings to visit on our 2017 HIP trip! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️

Back on june 12, the power was out on Hornby all day.
We were warned about it ahead of time, & we had some say in which day would be the least painful.
bc hydro had to replace a worn pole that i believe serviced Hornby & Denman both.
While the power was off, they were going to fix all sorts of other things, too.
The power was due to be out 8am-8pm, but we were lucky when it came back on at 5:30.
Well, remember that lightning storm when we lost our cam?
Turns out this new hydro pole got struck by lightning too!
& now it needed replacing again.
So in order to prevent a long power outage in the winter, when the blasted pole ended up having problems anyway, they let us pick another day for a 12 hour power outage, while they again replaced the pole.
This time we were to lose power at 7:30am.
i made sure & set my alarm so i could get my water boiling for coffee & oats before we lost power for the whole day.
i have an old fridge, the kind where the freezer frosts up so that you can barely close the door.
Last time i defrosted it was the last 12 hour outage, well, guess what i needed to do again today.
i wanted to take Otto for a walk, but i needed to tend the defrosting of the fridge or i would come home to a HUGE puddle.
So, poor Otto waited in the car til i was done.
The power came back before i had all the ice out!
It was really thick this time.
FINALLY it was done & wiped & turned back on, but now it was after 4pm, starting to get dark, & i was pooped.
Probably Otto would be happy to just come in & have his dinner & call it an early night?
Oh, but he has been waiting in the car all this time, okay, let*s go somewhere, but where?
It is high tide so the Niner steps will be underwater.
Grassy Point?
But i am tired & he will be dragging me all over to sniff everything, it would be nice to let him loose.
Hidden Beach maybe?
We can see if anyone is there, & even on the leash he is happy to just sniff every third blade of grass on the path to the beach?
Okay!
Plan made.
We went down there, no one was there, so i just threw his leash over his back & told him to have at it, i was gonna sit on a log & look at the water for a bit.
i sat down with a huge sigh, then looked up at the water & movement caught my eye in the sky.
i looked up & a Bird was flying from Sandstone Point right into Hidden Beach!
& the Bird was an Eagle!
& they landed in Mum & Dad & Em*s perch Tree in Hidden Beach!
Who was this Eagle?
i hadn*t brought my camera, grrrr, so i ran back up to the car to get it & my tripod & set up.
Oh, wow, i think this might be Dad.
This is what i thought down on the beach, & i am really thinking it, looking at the fotos now.
Will wait for better light, & a view of his back to see if the distinctive feather is there, but i am pretty sure.

i don*t have the best vantage point here, there is too much greenery in the way, but the tide is right up to the beach & i am not sure i can get a better view than this.

Well i moved, & when i looked up at the Tree, the Eagle was gone...
Darn.
But i kept looking.
Was that a white tail maybe?
i zoomed in.
YES!
i am glad i moved.
This is a much better angle.
Look.
Has Dad got a basketball in his crop?
& is that his white tie of down feathers showing through the brown feathers?
There is also what looks like a petticoat feather to the left of his head!  :mhihi

All he needs is a down feather stuck to his beak.
The petticoat feather will have to do.
It looks like it could be his.

Ever handsome and stately Dad returns and I am filled with hopefulness for the new season. We used to wait and look to the nest and chart the date/day that Mom and Dad returned. We knew, with trepidation, that one day things would change. And they did. Is the eagle with the hole in her beak Mom? Is Em actually Hope? We will probably never know for sure. What I am sure of is that this experience of knowing all of you and Mom and Dad and Em and all the eaglets changed me forever!

Thank you from my heart to you Booni for your willingness to share with us. Made even more precious each post.

Today at 1:30 i was scanning the Nest neighbourhood when i spotted an Eagle perched in The Peters* Tree!
Seems like a LONG time since i have seen an Eagle perched there.
It looked like Dad, but it was just a quick peek.
When i went by later to see if he was still there, the perch Tree was empty.

It was a lovely sunny day so i went looking for Dad today.
& i found him!
In The Babysitting Tree.
From the cam, this is a nice spot to see Dad, but from the ground, that big short branch is in the way.
Had to wait for him to peek out from under it.
He was in a perfect spot & perfect light to show us his specially marked feather that tells us it is him.

i did a drive through the Nest neighbourhood & was thinking no Eagles were home til i thought i spotted a white head in The His & Hers Tree.
Yes!
i was thinking this must be Dad, but right away, i am seeing it is not.
Dad appears to have a shorter neck than this Eagle.
& this one*s head feathers are more fluffy.
& the body feathers seem more dark, even in the bright sunshine.

Definitely a longer neck, & fluffier head feathers.
& they are looking with elongated neck (rubbernecking) in the direction of Niner territory, where i spotted an Eagle perched on my way by later.

There were no Eagles in the other Trees closer to the Nest, that i noticed.

It rained almost all day today, but finally around 5 pm the sky cleared partially and I was able to go outside.

After a while I heard trills!
That was a surprising sound, and I realised I hadn't heard that sound in the neighbourhood this fall yet, even after Dad returned. Mind you I haven't been home much.

Time to investigate!

Didn't take me long to find the source...
Sweet!
Two eagles on the babysitting tree!

Imp, on the chat, said right away that the female's neckline looks like Em's. What looks familiar to me is the little double track of dark on the tip of one of the tail feathers.

Both eagles had their chest feathers puffed up and were alerting from time to time, but I wasn't able to find any other eagle in the area.

On thursday evening, the wind started howling, rain was pouring down, then our power went out!
i was lucky i got mine back by 4pm friday.
saturday it rained all morning, hard, then got a little nicer at the end of the day.
i had seen an Eagle in The Babysitting Tree on my way by, & was determined to get out to photograph them.
But i got waylaid by other things & never made it out.
Today was a beautiful sunny day, so the last thing on my list was to do a drive by through the Nest neighbourhood to look for the Eagles in the lovely setting Sun light.
There they both were!

Yikes, all the Trees have grown up & i had to keep looking up to spot them through the Trees to get my best views.

Now, i don*t have any real way of seeing in my fotos that this is Em, but what tells me that it is is Dad*s comfortable behaviour with her, noticeable in wren*s fotos last night, too.
They finally bonded after the Herring Spawn last season, & Dad would not be like this if the female were anybody else other than Mum.

i got a call from a friend who lives near me in the Nest neighbourhood.

I saw two Eagles, they had apparently been perusing my chickens, but I didn*t realize that they were up there, & THEN I heard the whir of wings. About thirty feet above my house they grasped talons & they did a tremendous corkscrew twirl dance thing over the roof of my house. It was wonderful. I wondered what these Eagles were doing above my house. Was it a mating ritual they were doing?

i explained to her that likely an Eagle other than Em or Dad was in the territory & that they were being challenged & that the grasping of feet & twirling like that was like a game of chicken to see who would let go first.
They had let go of each other & flown away just before they reached my friend*s roof.
i have also been hearing the Niners screeching a lot, & today they were in the Tree across the road from me, two Eagles screeching away.
So perhaps there is some vying for Nest territory going on?
i am putting a little video on the Niner topic next.

Okay, so i was heading through the Nest neighbourhood looking for Eagles, but hadn*t spotted any.
i was just turning up the hill from Grassy Point when an Eagle went beaning over my head & out towards the water.
So, i turned & went back down the hill to the water.
It was a beautiful sunny blue sky day & a ways out over the water i spotted what looked like feeding activity.
There were a bunch of Gulls flying around over the water & i spotted two Eagles in amongst them.
One then the other came flying back in over my head before i could get a video, & landed in The His & Hers Tree.
These fotos are taken from the Water side of the Tree.
Now, i assumed these were Em & Dad til i looked at my fotos.
Now i am not so sure.

Now, the one on the left COULD? be Em, but the one on the right just doesn*t seem like Dad.
Look at those two white feathers showing on the back.
Could just be feathers from under the tail showing through?
Or a reflection?
This Eagle has their wings open & airing a bit, so maybe that is what is causing the two white ones to show?

The Eagle on the right is all fluffed up, making them look not at all like Dad.
The neck seems long for Dad, & the head feathers too fluffed out.

Thank you for all that amazing detail Booni. Do you think the first two may have been passing through on their way to their own territory? Have there been any ongoing disputes to your knowlege? I sure hope we dont have fighting anymore.

thanks booni.  i agree, that first set of pics on H & H sure doesn't resemble Dad.

So glad you found him though.  I know you all are having dreadful weather.  Hope he and Em are faring ok thru all the wind and rain.

A little walk after work... A little check on the nest territory. I could hear trills from the Hidden Beach area. Nobody on the Babysitting Tree. I checked the nest perfunctorily... Just in time to see an eagle land silently on it and disappear below the rim.

A minute or so later, just this one view, in bad light, blurry:

(https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5689/30289232061_bd7c7377da_z.jpg) (https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5689/30289232061_a9e42635ed_k.jpg)

I think the eagle probably dived off the far side of the nest at that point or shortly thereafter. More trills from Hidden Beach. I walked around to get a different angle, nobody visible. It started to rain and the light faded some more. That's all there is to my story for today.

Around 5 pm, I decided to go lurking in the nest neighbourhood.

Found no eagles around, except 2 perching in the favourite perch of the Wiig territory, on Sandstone Point.

I got captivated by the shore birds all crowded on Grassy Point, hemmed in by the high tide: a couple dozen Black-bellied Plovers, maybe a hundred Surfbirds and as many Black Turnstones. The gulls were Californias, Glaucous-winged and Mews. I haven't seen any Thayer's Gulls yet this season.
Then on my way home around 6:15, the light fading.

A trill!
Nobody on the BST...
But an eagle on the old wide-angle cam just above the nest!

Blurry photo... those telephoto lenses aren't designed to take pictures at dusk.

I waited in the deepening dusk, hoping to see where that one would fly to!
15 minutes later, still there... time to go home.

Another late-afternoon walk...

First check of the BST... Nobody... A peek at the nest... Hey!!!
October 18, 5:21 pm
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8418/30419509575_ba4999053e_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8418/30419509575_68dbfd63f7_k.jpg)

Within a minute, a furling of black wing signalled a move to the runway... But by the time I got to the other side, the eagle was gone.

I check the seaside trees and enjoyed the last rays of sun...
Then returned, and surprise! Here they both were.
6:03 pm
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8571/30333207571_24f6e67afb_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8571/30333207571_f8460669d8_k.jpg)

This is sort of a side view, across a long distance. I returned to my favourite watching post, but from there it was impossible to see if the eagle was still in the nest bowl.
The one on the WA cam was still there... Preening and scratching and looking around.
6:07
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8137/29787734363_f28f1611fc_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8137/29787734363_5adc20c381_k.jpg)

Then another quick shadow of dark wing: the eagle from the nest bowl dropped out on the far side and flew toward Grassy Point, where I heard some trills. Then back closer, somewhere on my left, invisible, but those clear high trills sure sounded like Dad's!

Then the remaining eagle joined in: Em at her lowest and chuffiest, confirming her identity.
6:09
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8631/30333192341_9df61d2b84_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8631/30333192341_764a4b6ff1_k.jpg)

She stayed where she was while the light faded again and I made my way home.

It has been raining raining raining & WINDY!
i drive through the Nest neighbourhood on my way home, but i haven*t spotted any Eagles at all.
Yesterday i was just turning homewards when i saw an Eagle overhead & then i heard calling, so i went around the block again.
Found THIS Eagle in The Peters* Tree!
More to come later.
This is my first test foto, before i adjust my settings properly.
It is dark, but i like it anyway.

i was there about 45 minutes, & i had to pee REAL BAD!
But there she was & she was magnificent, so i stayed & took portraits of her.
People were talking next door & at one point i had to stretch so i waved to them & they said they were wondering if i was real because i wasn*t moving at all.  :mhihi

When i left, he was just taking off.

Today we were going for a walk at Grassy Point & we were just heading down hill on the driveway when i heard a whoosh of wings!
i looked up & Dad or Em was just landing in The His & Hers Tree, calling all the while.
Another Eagle who was close to adult was being *encouraged* to keep on going, & flew towards the Niners* territory.
This Eagle had a band of dark along their tail tips, so not quite adult yet.

Hi Rajame.  Which eagle had a hole in her beak?  Did it look like Mom?  I missed that.  Thanks, Sandy :)

Made even more precious each post.

nubchai, Rajame is referring to an Eagle i spotted during the Herring spawn this past season.
There were Eagles all over the rocks during the lower tide of this day & they were waiting for Herring to jump out of the water onto the rocks at their feet & then they would try to nab one.
One Eagle had a deformity or damage to their beak, but i didn*t think they looked like Mum at all.
The ground observation pages here (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1604.msg171623#msg171623) show this Eagle.
You can go to the page before & the page after to see more of this Eagle & how i discovered her.

Driving through the Nest Neighbourhood today, I saw an eagle fly across the road toward Mishi's tree. Then I could hear two eagles calling from that direction. Stop that truck!

It was nice & sunny on my way home so i swung by the Nest neighbourhood on my way home & spotted one Eagle in The Babysitting Tree.
As i turned around the corner to go to the back side of that Tree, i noticed there was another Eagle atop Gregg*s Tree!

Yesterday it seemed to rain rain rain, but then in the early afternoon the Sun came out!
It was already low in the sky, so the light was fabulous.
We did a drive through the Nest neighbourhood & stopped at the top of the hill down to Grassy Point just to enjoy the view.
The Sun was catching white all the Gulls on the rocks during the high tide.
Most of the rocks were under water, the tide was so high.
There were Sea Lions snoozing in the water & slurping past the rocky point, they seemed to be feeding!
People went around us & down to the water & it turned out later they had spotted Humpback Whales spouting along, very close to the shore, maybe four of them i heard.
& we were right there & never noticed.
Later i came back with my camera to catch the lovely light & whatever i could spot down there.
The Humpbacks were far out, spouting closer to Texada, but i never saw them.
But there were still lots of Sea Lions, swimming past & snoozing.
At one point, over to the left towards Niner territory, there was some sort of feeding frenzy with Gulls & at least two Eagles diving at the water.
The Eagles flew away screeching, i think someone wanted what the other had caught, & i heard that screeching for quite a long time after.
Oh, it was just lovely down at Grassy Point.
There was a Kildeer piping beside me on the Grass, Gulls & Oystercatchers resting on the rocks in the Sun, Sea Lions snoozing & leaping out of the water.
It was high tide, so perhaps this brought in some feed for everyone, including the Humpback Whales, who had been reported going past very close to shore.
Here are some snoozing Sea Lions for you, while i go through the rest of my footage from that day.
Notice they actually have their eyes closed!
You see their tails & their flippers above the water, then watch as they come up for air, still asleep.
i suspect they have full bellies!

Yesterday we were down at Grassy Point again & there was DEFINITELY no Sun at all.
The dark grey clouds were thick & extended right down to the water in all directions.
There was the odd Sea Lion swimming past, one or two snoozing, & we saw a family of Otters swimming from right to left!
Suddenly i spotted an Eagle flying in from the water.
She called a female call & landed in The Glass House Trees.
When we got closer to the Water & i looked to the right, another Eagle was on Big Rock!
Dad?
At one point, that Eagle flew towards the one in The Glass House Tree, she took off & i thought they would both land in The His & Hers Tree but only Dad did.
He called & she headed inland a bit towards Niner territory.
So now i*m not sure if Dad was chasing off a visitor, or was this Em, heading towards their boundary with the Niners.

Oh!
& there was also a youngster flew by inland towards the Nest Tree, & neither Em nor Dad made a fuss at all.

November 26, 10 am...

Just now... Heard eagle calls close by. Stepped out of the house to see a raven flying across my clearing, with an eagle in pursuit. The raven landed in one of the tall firs on the edge of my yard, the eagle in the next tree. Raven croaking nonstop, and then I heard two sets of calls, high and low together... There had already been an eagle perching there!

After a few minutes the raven took off inland, and a few seconds later one of the eagles followed.
I heard a bunch of eagle calls from Niner territory after that... Then that was it.

The second eagle is still perched on the edge of my yard as I speak, preening. He or she is just visible as a silhouette in the grey rainy morning.

10:25...
I just went back to check again and to look for a better angle of view... And the second eagle took off, also inland. There are calls from what I think might be the back of the gravel pit. This is the designated spot for people to dispose of animal carcasses, a quiet place where the eagles and vultures can feed. Some hunters I know dropped some offal from their recent deer hunt a couple of days ago, so that would explain the commotion.

Big commotion up my road this afternoon, dusk just starting to dim the view so all the photos are grainy.

3 eagles circled the big clearing up the road from me. I could see them through the trees... they were LOUD!

I ran for my camera and walked up there. By then they had each settled onto a perch.

One on the left side of the road, teetering in the wind. At first I thought this was Em, but the neckline looks different.
December 1st, 3:53 pm.

On the opposite side of the road, one eagle low in a tree. Closer to where the argument seemed to happen.

The eagle across the road took off around that point, I didn't see which way she went (I think she, from the low voice).
That's when I realised that there was another eagle just below the one in the last 2 pictures above, to the left.

This eagle soon took off toward the nest.

Then the other eagle took off, also toward the nest.
I got luckier catching that one.

A neighbour came by just after this... He told me there was a big altercation above that same field early this morning, with two eagles grabbing talons and whirling in the sky. Serious business! Not sure what's going on. Lots of action in that area this week.

i was on my way home & i thought the Sun was gone til i spotted this Eagle in The His & Hers Tree & the light was GLORIOUS!
i had been talking to cali about digital zoom.
i read ages ago that you will get way better fotos just using the optical zoom & turning the digital zoom off.
All the digital zoom does is digitally enlarge your foto.
You are way better off to zoom in full with the optical zoom & then blow up your foto from there by cropping it.
It gives you a way better foto.
But cali uses digital zoom for videos, which had never occurred to me.
So i had my digital zoom on & was catching fotos using it without realizing it.
i definitely should have been using my tripod, & i will next time, but i thought the light was just about to disappear & i was in a rush.
So some of these fotos aren*t super-dooper, except that the light is fabulous.
i am not absolutely sure who i have here, Dad or Em, but i am currently leaning towards Dad.
This one shows the glorious light, but i am on digital zoom & should have steadied the foto with the tripod as it is not sharp.

This one again is with the digital zoom & i am not holding it steady enough to get the eye sharp but look at the lighting!
The turn of his head just catches the light while the rest of his head is in shadow.
He was watching a bicycle go down the hill.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/115/30748526593_3ff5682d7a_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/NR9eGe)

He has turned his head to watch so the face is now in shadow.
The back of his head has lovely light & so do the feathers.
i need to up my ISO to show those.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/84/31558031295_51344ff704_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Q5FaeR)

Okay, i have upped my ISO by one notch & look how it shows his feathers so nicely now.
He is still watching the bicycle.
Hmmm, does this foto look kind of skewed to anyone but me?
Not sure why it does that.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/743/30748616903_2dac7a1679_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/NR9Gxi)

Here i have turned off the digital zoom & just used the maximum optical zoom then cropped it, & you can see it is a much sharper foto this way.
i suppose it could also be because i am not zoomed in so far so the shake is not so noticeable.

I'm still hearing various degrees of eagle commotion above the field next door every morning.

Today there was some decent light and I followed when I heard calls from next door, then soon after saw one eagle heading over to that field from Dad and Em's nest.

The light was right in my face and I had to walk up the road a ways before I could get some decent photos.

Usually there are a couple of ravens on the edges of the eagle kerfluffles, but this time at least, they were on an unrelated errand, stealing great chunks of the apples still hanging on the trees. This was during yesterday's commotion, and the light was so poor, this was the only photo I got.

Once again today, whoever had caused the altercation had vamoosed by the time I got up the road.

Two eagles were peacefully sitting on a tree at the back of the field, one at the very top and one below.

By the time I got out of the sun's glare, the lower one was taking off.

Check out the broken tip of the 3rd primary on the right wing. This is starting to look very familiar.

In this photo the two outer primaries are almost out of view behind the third, and we can see the edge of the broken tip clearly.

This morning as i was getting in my car for work i heard calls coming from the Nest area!
i had to resist the urge to go there because i was late for work!
When i got to the corner & glanced through the Trees i thought i saw an Eagle on top of Gregg*s Tree.
i decided to make myself 15 seconds even later by driving past.
There was indeed an Eagle there, plus there was a dark youngster on the tippy top of The Babysitting Tree!  :hearts2
But i was late & couldn*t stop!  :lumphammer8

I heard quite a few times something like Dad's Happy Trills, especially in October-November, but I have no way to be certain.
I'm busier these days so the lack of data does not necessarily reflect a change in the situation.

Well.
I don't know what to make of this one, speaking of what we were speaking of...

This afternoon I arrived home, walked into my gate, then heard a single high trill really really close!
I looked over, and there on the skinny top of a fir tree was a confusion of wings, two eagles trying to find their balance.

I honestly couldn't tell if they were on top of one another or side by side.  :mhihi
By the time I ran back outside with my camera, one was flying off.

Check out how much room there is on that treetop!
This has to be Em. The distinctive neckline, the two little strikes of brown on the outermost tail feather.
She had to fly in while grabbing the tree's vertical terminal stem and allowing it to bend under her weight as she landed. Quite a balancing feat!
Now imagine two eagles... In whatever order...

I'm trying to find gaps between all those little alder twigs. Still, this is the best view of an eagle I've ever had from my yard!

Just after this, Dad trilled again and flew past from behind that tree and left, and toward the nest. I hadn't known he was still close by!
Then Em followed.
The series is blurry because of all the branches between her and the camera, but it's worth posting just to show how she negotiates her takeoff - and how the tree unbends back to its vertical shape, giving us a clearer view of what she landed upon.

We were walking on Grassy Point yesterday when i spotted this lovely youngster!
After taking these fotos, i checked again & there was a second Eagle there!
Had they just arrived, or had i just missed them while looking at the youngster?
We were walking along & i kept looking up, wondering when to stop to get the best foto of the two of them.
i thought the second one was maybe Dad or Em, but then they both flew off & i think that second Eagle was a sub-adult.
Maybe this youngster was the one i saw in The Babysitting Tree the day before?

i was in a rush, again, when i spotted this Eagle in mishi*s Tree!
i wanted so badly to spend a bit of time trying to photograph this Eagle to see who they were, but i only had time for this one foto.
i thought it was interesting to see the dark markings on the tail tips.

It feels like it has been forEVER since i have been able to do any ground observations.
Today i was doing a Nest neighbourhood driveby & spotted an Eagle in The His & Hers Tree & actually had time to stop & take some fotos!
From the ground i wasn*t sure who this Eagle was.
Seemed like Dad, but i don*t have a view of his distinctive feather from where i am.
But now that i am looking at my fotos, i am pretty darn sure this is Dad.
This is his lovely soft Dad look.
Darn, the forum is still somehow skewing & squishing my fotos.
To see them properly, click on them & go to my flickr postings of them.

I was finally able to go out for a short walk in the nest neighbourhood today.

This is what the road looked like, looking down to Grassy Point.
February 7, 12:54
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/318/32734709296_6b0a93a0ce_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/318/32734709296_5d32c9be3e_k.jpg)

I could hear calls from the nest area... Sure enough, found Dad and Em at their post on the BST.
But the tree looked different!
12:59
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/664/32734732996_c23e30418e_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/664/32734732996_cc1cc80d84_k.jpg)

Deb was pointing out the thinned out bark in the areas where our eagles perch a lot!
Now watch that thinned-out spot on the left-hand branch!

1:01

Ahem!
That youngster just appeared out of nowhere.
Both Dad and Em are calling, but they're not leaving their branch.

The visitor stayed about 20 seconds, neither adult moving but they did a good deal of calling.
My lens had some dirt on it, dammit, so the pics are not very clear.

Off that one finally flew. In the larger sizes, we can see tassels on the secondaries, so this is definitely a first-year bird, not a relative.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/353/32734923886_bb193e7d85_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/353/32734923886_353279f433_k.jpg)

Now let's look again at the BST and that new scar.
The fallen branch is still hanging below!

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/619/32395640010_9a849ceec6_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/619/32395640010_e2f6eb3133_k.jpg)

Don't go walking under that tree in windy weather, that's all I'll say.

Just a quick check on the nest before I leave... All seems to be well.

On day two of our snow arrival, our power had been out half a day, i had slipped in the ditch getting my propane cookstove over to the house, but at least i had hot coffee!
Now on to taking some fotos of how beautiful it was that day.
It is not often that we get snow, & it is still lying all over the Trees & bushes.
The Bird feeder shows how much snow we have gotten.
That yellow Buddleia is so heavy with snow that it has gone from upright to leaning on the feeder.
The Birds seem to like it that way.
sandor*s mister made me that lovely tray for underneath the feeder to catch the seed spill!  :heart

Beautiful laden Firs across the road.
All the tops were leaning sideways.
Every time i was awake during the night i was hearing cracking of limbs & thudding.
i had a huge branch fall on my California Lilac & leaning on my clothesline!
i had to remove that before it broke my line.
A 30' Willow is lying on the ground right from the roots.
& an Alder & a Sea Spray are broken & lying on my other driveway.

Yesterday I walked to Grassy Point at sunset.

I could hear a lot of trilling coming from the far end of Niner Territory; at least one eagle was visible on the horizon line.

Then I spotted the passing eagle that was getting trilled at....

This eagle flew closer, closer...

And landed in a tree near Grassy Point. I wondered who this eagle was, looked like planning to stop over for the night?

I didn't expect much when I took a few photos, but look at the broken primary feather, and at the neckline...

It's Em!  :ecsmile

A visit to Grassy Point at the end of my day.

Around 5 pm, an eagle comes in from the ocean and lands on one of the Grassy Point fishing trees. There was already another eagle there... They both started calling...

I tiptoed closer with camera... Sure enough, it's Dad and Em.

I was hoping he'd bring back a gift for his sweetie, but he came back 3 minutes later, not carrying anything, and flew on to the nest area.
Both eagles called out a few times. Em's looking back toward the nest and BST, where Dad is.

i was near the Nest Tree so i took a peek & saw one Eagle perched in The Babysitting Tree.
Then i heard a duet & looked up as another Eagle flew by overhead.
i went back to the BST & there were now TWO Eagles, calling like crazy.

i did a driveby through the Nest neighbourhood this afternoon & spotted two Eagles in Fosters* Fir!
Took me a bit to even remember the name of the Tree it has been so long.
i figured Dad & Em but even from a distance i could see the lower down one was a dark youngster.
The upper one seemed to have something wrong with their tail, it was so short!
But now i can see it is dark tips on the tail feathers.

Okay, here is the start of cam installation day!
Finally!
Firstly, everyone is wondering what the heck the red thing is in the upper right corner of the cam when it is broadcasting.
Well, here is a great foto of it on the shed computer.
There is a yellow bell, which signifies motion/action & a clapper board like they use when making movies, which means we are recording.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/631/33061793462_8faf81da0e_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SnykkL)

The Securco fellas should have arrived at the shed shortly after 10am.
By 10:20 i was getting worried.
i hopped in my car & drove back to my place & found out they had just left there!
i drove down the road & there they were, sitting in their van, making phone calls.
i waved to them to follow me & we drove back to the shed.
Phew!

To the left is Dan*s climbing gear, ready to go.
To the right of that is our new cam, still in the box, the old mic tube & part of the grey box.
Then the Securco van, with Moses in his reflective vest.
He is the guy who put together this fabulous new microphone we have, & he has a vested interest in giving us good sound with it!

Here is our Tree team, Nick, Master Groundsman, Dale with some of his climbing gear already on, & Dan who has had a sore throat for three days but showed up on this one good day to install the cam anyway!
Oh, & Dale*s dog.

While driving around looking for the shed, one of the Securco fellas was sure he heard Eagles calling & said they should head that way to find us.
Well, he was hearing Em & Dad screeching, & he was right.

Dan Dale & Nick.
You can see Dan looks sick here.
There was a long wait for the Tree team, who had showed up at 9:30 & gotten ready to climb.
When the Securco fellas arrived, it was realized that there was quite a bit to be done on the technical end to get ready for the cam & mic to go up the Tree.

(https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3674/33091074291_f315673efa_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Sq9pvD)

Moses under the table in the shed, probably connecting the mic wiring.
i shoulda asked him to turn the heater on while he was under there.
We were all freezing.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/718/33062420322_d8cf281529_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SnBxFG)

There was still lots of squawking going on out there, so i kept looking to see what was going on.

i got busy doing something or other & for some reason looked up Gregg*s Tree & perhaps THIS was the reason Dad & Em were screeching!

Okay, we are finally getting close to Tree climbing time!
Here is our new mic inside the old mic tube.
You can just see the tip of it through the screen.
You can see there is now a grey hairy animal covering the mic to help improve the outdoor sound!
WE dug out the tights mishi bought for the end of the mic tube years ago, but now there is a new plan.
They have drilled big holes in the side of the mic tube to let the sound in to the sound-cancelling baffles i believe is the terminology? on the sides of the mic.
This is a shotgun mic, & apparently being closed off inside the tube like the old mic was meant the mic wasn*t working properly.
The whole thing is then covered in window screen & zap straps to keep Birds & Bugs out.

Look at the time!
We*ve been here since 9:30 & we haven*t even climbed the Tree yet!
Here is our new cam, attached to the lid of the grey box, with protective foam padding still around it to protect it going up the Tree.
Sometimes Dan climbs with this all attached to his waist!
Not sure what the plan is today, but there are now lines attached to our cam for hauling up the Tree somehow.

february 27 2017 14:07 - cam attached to lid of grey box

(https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3882/33178177046_09c878636c_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SxQQ8h)

The guys are preparing for the strenuous Tree climb.
Our orange climbing rope is behind Dan going up to near the top of Gregg*s Tree.
We left it there when the cam came down, not knowing it would be hanging there this long!
Normally our rope is replaced by a finer nylon twine that stays in the Tree for pulling up the good rope which gets stored in a dry tote out of the Sun while we are not using it.
The orange rope goes right up to the top of the Tree then back down & has been tied to the Tree on the right.

(https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3786/33063136882_64236f17f4_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SnFdGb)

Dan puts his foot into this gadget in order to use that leg to push him up the rope.
His hands grab the blue gadget on the orange rope above his head & he uses his arms & one foot to haul himself all the way up the rope to the top.

Notice the time.

Notice the time!
Cam wrapped in its protective white foam packing & attached to the face of the grey box has been hauled up to the mounting site.
Wires in the grey box from the grey wire mesh tubing going up the Tree from the shed are being attached to the cam now.

february 27 2017 16:20 - cam being connected

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/724/33238200285_be5f28d3c8_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SD9sWH)

In the shed, Simon, with the lovely Irish accent, & Moses are connecting wires behind the dvr & monitor, trying to get the video feed from the cam to show on the monitor.
They were a lot calmer than i would have been.
Look at the time!
The last ferry leaves at 6pm.
Nick is ready for a nap.
He is a new father.  :heart
The painting in the background is done by Gregg*s Mum.
He hung it to make it nice in there for me.

february 27 2017 16:49 - in the shed with Simon Moses & Nick

(https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3892/33081561832_0a2f6e314d_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SpiDMJ)

The monitor still says NO VIDEO.
Why don*t we have video?
Simon is working on the wires.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/703/33109802861_b75848d90a_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SrNoS2)

We are all chilled to the bone & tired.
But still no video.
Simon is talking to Dan in the Tree via walkie talkie, telling him to switch some of the wire connections in the grey box.

We finally get video!
This is our first view from the cam.
The dome is still wrapped in protective wrapping.

february 27 2017 17:01 - we have video!

At this point, Dale & Dan*s boots are a sight for sore eyes!
Moses & Simon clean up the shed for me & take away all the packaging & make a pile of all the bits & pieces that we own but no longer need.
They debate heading to the Gasbar for a coffee & decide to run for the ferry instead.
It is 5:30pm & we are all glad to have had success & be heading home in warm cars.
Dale says how proud he is to be involved in all this.
Dan goes home sick & has a fever & a hoarse voice the next day.

i took too long to get out there & missed all the millions of Eagles in all the Trees in the Eagle territory this morning.
On my way back i did a driveby through the neighbourhood & there were two Eagles sitting very close, side by side in Fosters* Fir so i pulled over & rolled down the window to photograph them.
Dad on the left, Em on the right.

i thought Dad was yawning but they started calling so i turned on my video but it wasn*t focused so i turned it off & started the video anew.
Then i had trouble finding them in my viewer & when i did...

Tuesday March 7. A very wet eagle on the Peters' Tree.
Wings open, floating in the breeze.

Hard for me to tell who this is. After a few minutes, a second eagle, who had been perched lower and out of my view, dashed out, so I'm pretty sure this is one of our pair.

i did a driveby through the neighbourhood on my way home this afternoon & i thought i could hear Em making her *is there food for me?* call.
She sounded like an Eaglet squawking excitedly for food coming in.
i looked up & an Eagle was flying overhead & it looked like they had food or a small stick in their foot.
Em*s calls continued & when i looked nestwards i could see an Eagle on the wide angle camera.
So i decided to make a quick stop.

Hornby Island Conservancy is holding a Herring Festival this weekend, with speakers & boat trips, a dinner & a dance.
They are raising money & collecting data to make Hornby a Marine protected Island.
i*m all for it.
The Hornby Island Photographers were invited out on a boat trip on the lovely Sun Corona to take fotos of the spawn to be used for the Festival.
It was a lovely sunny day, cold, but there was no Herring spawn to photograph.
We headed from Ford Cove over to Norris Rocks where every inch of the rock was covered in writhing sunning Sea Lions.

We hear them regularly, flying over, around Herring spawn time.

Yesterday from the cam we could see the beginnings of a Herring spawn on Hornby Island, finally, over towards Tralee Point.
i went to see what i could see.
The band of blue went from in front of the Brigantine Nest & over almost to Whaling Station Bay.
It wasn*t a very robust band of blue, narrow & spotty, but the fish boats were right in there against the shore trapping the breeding Herring in their gillnets as they made their way to shore to set their eggs & spray their milt.  :eccry
The Eagles were on hand to take advantage of the situation.

Yesterday i went down to the area between Brigantine Nest & Tralee Nest, both to the right of our cam view, which is where the above video was done.
Here is more from yesterday.

A panorama foto that goes from Sandstone to the far left to Tralee to the far right, showing the milky blue colour a bit & some of the fish boats.

The skiffs that they use to reel out the nets & floats then beat the nets of the Herring catch have a very shallow draft & they were placing the gill nets very close to the shore.
This is Tralee point & there were loads of Eagles of all ages there.
i believe the Herring were hopping out of the water onto the Point & the Eagles were waiting to nab them.

Lots of Eagles in the shadows there.

Yesterday i went out to check on the Herring Spawn & it was MUCH more robust now.
We were seeing it from Hidden Beach & all the along the north side of Hornby, through Whaling Station Bay & around Cape Gurney & way out to Helliwell Park!
Here i am, between Cape Gurney & Helliwell & there is that gorgeous blue.

March 15, the first day of the spawn on Hornby...
Still no spawn at Grassy Point at that time, but the territory was full of eagles!
I pulled in at the point and found 3 eagles in His-and-Hers Tree.

Every few minutes, some eagles fly in from way out of view offshore. And a few more launch out of the trees and fly out.

Here's one of the ones returning.

mishi, yes, i meant to mention that something looks wrong with the Eagle*s eye there.
It is definitely there, but it doesn*t look right.

My next stop on this day was Whaling Station Bay.
There was definitely Herring spawn activity going on there!

Next we went looking along Anderson Drive.
Lots of spawn activity along there, too.
This is near the old Belcarra Nest #16-19.
We are looking east towards Cape Gurney.

You can also see the gill nets set in the water, they have small white floats all along them & big coloured buoys at either end.

On this day of heading out to capture the Herring spawn i went down to the beach in front of Niner territory!
It was dull lighting & raining, i am high up on a bank tiptoeing close so as not to scare anyone who is down there.
i see all these shapes in the distance, a dozen of them?
What the heck are they?
They look Eagle shaped but they are black against the blue of the Herring spawn water.
They are all Eagles in silhouette!
Waiting on the shores at low tide for a Herring to jump out of the water in range for nabbing!

Oh, wow, did i ever hit the jackpot yesterday!
i got invited over to Nest #6/7 territory, apparently the Sea Lions were really something.
i*d asked the day before if i could go check it out, then got distracted by something else, so this time i figured i*d better head over there & take a peek.
i parked & then walked through the sunny warm grassy field, & the sounds were amazing!
Gulls, Sea Lions, Eagles, a cacophony.
Then i started seeing Eagles everywhere, in all the Trees, some perched on the edge of the cliff not much higher off the ground than the top of my head.
i made a point of slowing down & looking at the ground so as not to scare everyone away.
There were Eagles air drying!

When i can see the beach, i am blown away!
The tide is out & the beach is COVERED in Eagles!
i have never seen so many in one place, dozens & dozens of all ages.
Are they all waiting for Herring to jump out of the water onto the rocks again?
On the bank the Trees are also full of Eagles.
i look to my right, tons of Eagles on the beach there too, & to the left, Eagles as far as i can see.

Well, i*d love to stay in this place all day, but i feel the Eagles are well aware of my presence & i don*t want to interrupt their chance to eat any longer, so i begin to slowly make my way away.
One last glance at the Eagles way out at the tide line.

On this same boat ride past the Sea Lions on Norris Rocks, three branded Sea Lions were spotted.
i managed to get fotos of two of the individuals.
i have been kindly sent a database of all the brands so we can now look up this history of these individuals.
There is a page about this here. (https://www.orcanetwork.org/marinemammals/sealionsightings.html)

This one says -  ST. GEORGE REEF/SOUTH SEAL ROCK, which is Northern California!, july 13 2002 & this is a female!
Looks like they were branded as pups on the same spot one day apart.

I hate that they are branded  :mgritted. It seems very cruel to me. Sort of dark ages.  :ohno Hopefully this no longer happens and they are microchipped instead.  :really
I had no idea that sea lions could live that long!  Quite a migration also.   Good thing they are so fat - need the energy!  :nod2

On March 16 and 17, while the herring spawn was happening near Grassy Point, I found about 200 Harlequin ducks in the little bay west of the point. Usually through the winter there might be a dozen there. Someone else reported a similar gathering near Tralee Point.
I didn't even dare get out of the truck for fear of making them all fly away. On the second day the tide was high, the water was all pale turquoise from the spawn, and the light was much better. I was able to take a series of photos just by parking at the bottom of the road and rolling my window down. Why birds tolerate cars so close but would fly away at the sight of a human twice the distance away is a mystery to me.

Some of the Harlequins were engaged in mating displays, mainly racing around like speed boats, chasing each other around.
March 17, 10:35 am
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2888/33424917642_497812173b_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2888/33424917642_2cb852032f_k.jpg)

More chasing, and a male doing a neck stretch on the right.

(https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3762/33198504450_47217a799c_z.jpg) (https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3762/33198504450_a2e1e41eeb_k.jpg)

They also have a way of swimming while displacing a whole lot of water, maybe part of their display also? Look at the bow wave climbing right up to the males' necks.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2919/33424920712_faca30f875_z.jpg) (https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2919/33424920712_20d64c240a_k.jpg)

A larger wave came crashing in, from the wake of a boat. Some of the boys just played with it; Harlequins seem to like doing this, even so close to the rocky shore. A lot of the ducks used the same wave to land all in a line on the shore.

Interesting observation Wren. I am so happy you point out such details, as I would likely not have noticed. :eclol If I had noticed I certainly would not have known that bow wave was not the norm. :eceek  I Love the close ups and opportunity to clearly see what you are describing. Thanks for all of that.  :eclove

Today was a bit of an Eagle day in the neighbourhood.
We went for a walk to Grassy Point somewhere around noon & there was an Eagle that sure looked like Mum from the ground with my eye, but i didn*t have my camera with me!
She was low down in the His & Hers Tree, not a place i usually see Eagles, she was adult & she had that shaggy head of Mum.
She didn*t fly away at the sight of me but sure looked at me.
Then another adult flew out from the Nest area to way out over the water & i lost sight of them.
Then i saw them coming back & heading to the Nest area & i heard a female call from that area, while this adult was just sitting there in H&H.
Then another Eagle flew from the Nest area & i watched them fly waaayyyyyyyy out over the water to the left where i could see other Birds, perhaps Eagles?, circling over the water.
Still this Eagle remained in H&H.
We continued our walk towards Niner territory & there was a young Eagle, just turning sub-adult, white head feathers but lots of dark still in there & soaking wet in Trees where i have also seen Dad & Em perched, this side of Niner territory.
i wish i had had my camera with me!

Later in the day i was just heading out when the Niners flew in with a great display & lots of calling & landed in the Tree across the road from me.
i was intending to go out on an errand but got distracted by them & ended up heading out into the Nest territory to see if maybe that H&H Eagle was still around somewhere.
i first spotted THIS Eagle in mishi*s Tree.
She is looking towards the Niner territory.
(Darn, these are all posting looking skewed & wrong, you*ll need to click on each one to see it properly.)

Next i checked out the Nest area & found these two in the upper left green bushy branch of The Babysitting Tree.
i see them here on the cam & am not sure if i am seeing greenery or Eagles.
Now i know why.
i can barely see them through the branches from the ground, either.

We were seeing some Eagles perched in white-trunked Trees yesterday, from the cam.
i went looking for what they might be, today.
These are on the far edge of Hidden Beach & likely Wiig territory.

These are around the corner of Sandstone, definitely Wiig territory.
There is fresh water running onto the beach near these.

Yesterday we went down to Grassy Point just in time to catch dozens of Eagles in the Trees & in the air there!
Then an Eagle caught my eye, flying overhead & intently way out over the water.
i could see a spin of Gulls way out over the water!
Suddenly all these Eagles were flying out of the Trees & heading out that way!
A feeding event, likely Herring!
Try to count how many Eagles here!

Made a spur of the moment trip to Hornby yesterday.  After lunch we decided to go to Grassy Point...there was a great number of gulls still feasting on herring roe.  A sea lion carcass had the attention of a pair of juveniles.  This shot looks like a four legged eagle!

(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2816/33480516950_e8e1e30142_k_d.jpg) (http://)

Here they are seemingly enjoying the windy, wet and bitterly cold weather!

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3698/33823932636_5a31bd6fff_k_d.jpg) (http://)

We gladly hopped in to our vehicles to warm up and took a drive past the nest and found Em at home.  Looks like she had been feasting on herring.  We later heard that she had been in the nest for quite awhile...promising news!

Another great visit to Hornby!

There is a dead Sea Lion that washed up on Grassy Point when the Herring fishery started.
The carcass is attracting LOTS of Eagles!
This one was at the top of the hill down to Grassy Point perched on a Tree right on the road!
An unusual spot.
So we pulled over & took fotos from the car.
This looks like an Eagle who is four just turning five!
Only a small amount of darkness left in the head feathering, beak is fully yellow, eye yellow with a hint of brown still, too bad we can*t see the tail feathers!
This could be Hali!
