Good morning all,

Depending on where the news comes from I am easily  :mconfused as to which of the two topics the news should go into.

To make it easier for all of us I have set up this new topic. Here we can post, add photos / videos and discuss the news and ask questions about 'La Diva' (Karula) and her new fourth litter.

By the end of today or Wed. morning I hope to have posts placed in the other two topics moved into this new topic.

I am glad to hear Karula is doing okay. I hope to hear about her new cub(s) soon!  :eclove

Late Wed. evening (Dec. 26) I posted on FB's group 'Leopards of Sabi Sands' and asked if there was any news about  Karula. Elin Fowler replied

Karula was seen pregnant in Oct, not exactly sure of the dates. I was just posting to another WE friend wondering if anyone heard about Karula giving birth yet. Great minds think a like BBe.

KARULA HAS GIVEN BIRTH

It sure paid off to ask the question if any news re Karula. My sincere thanks to Elin F. on FB's group 'Leopards of Sabi Sands' who communicated with several other folks.  Within 24 hours of my asking, there are now several comments / posts.

Rangers are saying they were born about 3 weeks ago.
The bush telegraph is spreading the word fast and furious.  :biggrin3

Jan. 1, 2013. The two photos of conversation on FB's group 'Leopards of Sabi Sands' would not show here. This is my copy of the conversation as it occurred.

KARULA HAS CUB(S) - WHOOPEE

Here in chronological order are the posts / comments on FB group 'Leopards of Sabi Sands' Dec. 26 between myself and Elin F.

Quote
BBE: My post asking re any updates on Karula. "I have not been here for some weeks now. I hope you have/are enjoying some time with family and friends. I look forward to 2013 and more news and photos about the leopards.
Speaking of which, has there been an update on whether Karula is pregnant and if so might she have had her fourth litter?
TY and :)"

Elin:  Karula was seen pregnant in Oct, not exactly sure of the dates. I was just posting to another WE friend wondering if anyone heard about Karula giving birth yet. Great minds think a like BBe.

BBE: Elin, thank you so much for the update. I followed Karula on WE from the time the drives started. Beautiful offspring.

Elin:  So did I Bbe, I just did some digging and have NEWS ON KARULA!! Someone heard from Ryan Johnston of Arathusa that Karula has had her cubs about 3 weeks ago although no info at the moment on how many or if anyone has seen them. Anat, Mika, Sy, great news, eh? Do you know any more about this?

Elin:  My pleasure to pass this news on. I just rec'd a response from Elephant Plains who said they did see Karula in early Dec. with suckle marks but don't know any details. I hope she will be seen more often now and maybe in a few weeks with the cub or cubs.

BBE: Elin, thanks, great news indeed. I will pass it onto my friends who will be ecstatic.

After the above, comments on the FB group 'Djuma Djunkies'
Sandi R.:

How exciting is this!!! Hope she brings them around to Djuma so we can see them!!
KARULA NEWS from asking around. Greg McCall-Peat heard from Ryan Johnston of Arathusa that Karula had her cub(s) about 3 weeks ago although nobody had seen them yet. She is keeping them hidden and no one knows how many cubs or sexes. I just wanted to pass this on since we just heard it. Pray for Karula and her new cub(s). ♥ Greg and/or Ryan will give us more info when available. Yay![/Fowler

Glad you posted this here, Sandi. The word is spreading . Deb, I am so glad I can share this with all the Karula lovers and it's all due to me asking at the right time...when Greg McCall-Peat saw my post and responded so quickly that Ryan from Arathusa knew she had given birth. I'm sure in the days and weeks ahead we will hear more. :-)))

Elephant Plains FB timeline Dec. 27 - Elin F. asked them if they had seen Karula?  Almost an immediate answer:
Quote
E.P. Rangers: Good morning Elin thanks we had a wonderfull Chritmas, hope you and your family also had a Merry Christmas. Yes we saw her the beginning of the month with suckle marks but don't know how many cubs.

So, there you have it - Karula has given birth to her 4th litter.  As we know Karula will keep her family well hidden from predators and keep moving them fronm den to den until she is sure it is afe to bring them out into the open.

I miss the drives too. Even if they were bouncing, boring at times, and some accents difficult to understand. I'd take them all back in a heartbeat.

Wonderful to hear about Karula. Looking forward to hearing and seeing more. Sure do wish we could be in a jeep walking along side her  :sigh

Indeed it is such fantastic news. It would be cool if Karula went back to Djuma, at least we'd have the waterhole cam just in case.  Four litters since February 2007.

I am thinking she will likely stay around EP or Arathusa ? All the reserves will soon know that there are oodles of folks on FB interested in seeing photos. Rangers/Guides will be armed with a camera when on drives.  So with luck we should see photos.

If I recall correctly it was about a month before Karula showed of her first litter Saseka and Tingana (females).  Mixo and Induna it was a little longer.  Have patience.

Happy New Year all

Someone kindly pointed out to me that the two photos in my Dec. 27, 2012 post about Karula giving birth were not visible to all.  I have re-done that portion of my post Karula Has Given Birth - Whoopee.   (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1290.msg124152#msg124152)

As of today no further information has been posted on FB.

Cam working at DPGR. The big male leopard Mvula has been around. He is such a handsome leopard. I have photos others have taken and will post them soon.

Note at 5:32 p.m. - I forgot that the PBS series 'Downton Abbey' resumes this evening.     Therefore editing, uploading and posting the photos may not be done until tomorrow.   :ecwink   :sorry

This is getting to be nail biting.  I have put 'Downton Abbey' on record for a few minutes.

Early morn (Jan. 7) CAT - a female leopard who appears to be lactating is near Vuyatela - looks like it could be Karula.  That might explain Mvula's presence. As he mated with La Diva several times; so ? father of K's latest cub(s).

Hopefully on Mon. I'll have time to post more pics.

Jan. 5 CAT - Mvula; male leopard.

More and more folks on FB who are well versed in ID of Sabi Sands leopards are saying it is Karula.  In which case that does likely mean Mvula is the Daddy and he has come to check on la Diva and offspring.  Which makes Karula's other mating partner the male leopard Tingana an 'also ran'. They both were seen mating with Karula.

BBE replied to MaggiesMom on Jan. 10, 2013

MaggiesMom, lovely to see you here. I am sure I speak for all who watched the game drives, when I say 'the drives, the wildlife and the crew' are all missed.

I realize this is not news about Karula, but to answer MaggiesMom question re Tara, Sebastien and Marc - - - - -

Tara continues to be a team leader at the Black Leopard Wildlife Campus.   (https://www.facebook.com/ResearchCam/app_106171216118819#!/) This is located in the Thaba Tholo Wilderness Reserve.   Tara is in some of the photos on this site.

She is seldom heard from, but did post on her blog site just before Christmas  HERE.  (http://tara-pirie.blogspot.ca/2012/12/seasons-greetings.html)

Sebastien finished doing some 3D work for WE and a video company. Then he and his long time lady love - Shannon went to to help manage the lodge and he is now heavily involved as the course director at Beyond Borders Film School ** .  (https://www.facebook.com/beyondbordersfilmschool)

In Oct. of 2012 he post two pieces of great news:
1. He and Shannon are expecting a baby in late April of this year.

2. He opened a nature film school and is the course director.  Click on the link in my first paragraph with the **   about Sebastien which goes to Schools timeline on FB and then click on 'About' for in depth detail.

Marc - has had short term positions in various places. I am not sure where / what he is up to at present.

April 3, 2013 - When I split the posts earlier today, it ended up in the wrong topic. So I copied it and added here after Maggies post.

January 22 eve. update re Karula

Well, confusion continues about Karula's activities  :eclol   According to Arathusa Safari Lodge's latest Rangers Diary two things are for sure, Karula:
'la Diva' obviously has the cubs tucked away so they won't be found / seen until she is good and ready to let them be seen.

For all the news about sightings of Salayexe, Karula, Mvula, Saseka (Thandi) and Tingana (Shadow) check out the
Arathusa Safari Lodge's Rangers Diary for Jan. 13 - 19, 2013 HERE.  (http://blog.arathusa.co.za/2013/01/rangers-diary-13-19-january-2013/)

With many thanks to Elin of the 'Karula and Family Photos' group on FB, this her post with a quoted synopsis of Arathusa's latest diary.  :ty

Quote
Arathusa Safari Lodge, Ranger's Diary - Jan 13-19, 2013

Sunday: We managed to find one of our female leopards, Shadow, walking through the bush, scent-marking as she went. We followed her for some time, before she eventually started contact-calling. We were then greeted by an awesome sight as her two small cubs came scampering out of the bush to join her. We sat and watched as she groomed the cubs, before they settled down to suckle from her right next to the vehicle.

Monday: We did, however, find fresh tracks of a male and female leopard and discovered them mating in a thicket close by. As we drove onto the sighting, we identified the big, dominant male from the east, Mvula, with the female Karula. What is interesting is that Karula displays all the signs of having one or more cubs as she is heavy with milk and has suckle marks. We have no idea though where she is denning her offspring.

Tuesday: It was still raining this morning, but we managed to go out and found Thandi resting in a Marula tree.

Friday: After sundowners we found Mvula lying at one of the small dams, and were lucky enough to hear him give one loud territorial call.

After Arathusa posted the Rangers Diary (in my previous post) Elin contacted them to ask

Today (Jan. 24 NA time) she heard back from them. This is what she posted in FB' 'Karula and Family Photos"

Quote
Thurs. Jan. 24 Posted by Elin:

Response 6 hrs. ago from my question Tues asking if they can give us any clearer info on Karula. "Arathusa Safari Lodge On Karula, it was obvious when we saw her December that she had suckle marks so we concluded that she'd had her cubs. We haven't had a confirmed sighting of the cubs yet, since Karula has been extremely secretive and we've had few sightings of her due to the fact that we have very few vehicles driving around in the area in which she operates. Also with all the young males around, she is keeping a low profile. We believe she has not lost the cubs, but we cannot be 100% sure. Time will tell."

Very wisely Karula is keeping any cubs well hidden and keeping us on our toes.  :nod2

February 2 - Karula is being a tease  :eclol

Posted in the last few hours by Mika Hak on FB's group 'Leopards of Sabi Sands' a report from Nkorho Lodge:
Quote

from Nkorho:
31 January 2013
Evening
Our drive started off with a herd of elephants on our driveway busy feeding and the young ones playing around with great energy. We spent some time with the herd before moving on with our drive. Then one of the guides spotted a female leopard (Karula) resting next to one of the pans, then she got up and decided to move in to thick bush for us not to folllow. We had a lovely sundowners and made our way back to the lodge, suddenly we got impala alarm calling not too far from where we were. It was a male leopard (Lamula) busy moving through sent marking while he was on the move.

February 6

After the above report from Arathusa, Rosie Lam (an avid viewer of the drives etc.) must have messaged Arathusa re Karula and how she was looking. She has posted their reply:

Quote
A reply I had from Arathusa 6 hours ago :-
Arathusa Safari Lodge Rosie St Lam - Karula has been seen again - with obvious suckle marks. She has been elusive though, and since she is moving around a lot in wet areas, our access and sightings of her have been limited. Watch this space...when the bush dries up a bit, we may have more to report.

I have to be honest I was getting concerned as to whether the cubs were OK ?

Fingers crossed that perhaps we will see the cubs sooner than later.  :eclove

Thank you for the reports, BBE!  I have also been worried about whether Karula's cub(s) are okay.  If she still appears to be nursing, maybe all is well and she is just being a cautious mom.   :goodluck

BBE, in the Arathusa blog there was reference to a large leopard "Mvhula", as well as reference to Mvula.  Do you know if these are just two spellings of the name of one leopard; or is there indeed a Mvhula as well as Mvula?

Nice to hear that Xivambalana seems to be doing okay on his own.  Sounds like him to scurry away when the large elephant appeared.  :ecsmile   I sure wish there was news of Xivindzi....  Hope she is okay.

Hello Luv,

Welcome back, nice to 'see' you here. I have also noticed the spelling and from my understanding and reading about him his name is spelled 'Mvula'.  I guess sometimes the person writing the report /post is unsure of the correct spelling.  :ecwink

FB Timeline for Mvula states:
Quote
Mvula/Leadwood Male was born in Lion Sands to the Outcrop Female, sister to the Warthog Wallow female, in 2005. Sired by Tumbela. He is now carving out his own territory in the North/Northwest of the Sabi Sands.

Mvula, which means rain, was named after first being spotted in a tree during a heavy downpour in Elephant Plains traversing area.

Estimated to be about 5 yrs old - Dec. 2009.

These two photos were posted today on Iren Juppa's FB page. She occasionally posted on the old Hancock forum's Africa section.

This was posted today on their FB timeline as well as the FB group 'Karula & Family Photos' (which is wehere I have copied this from)

Nkorho Bush Lodge
‎11 February 2013
 Morning
We started off with a huge breeding herd of about 300buffalo just east of our lodge lying in a open area. We stayed with them for some time then got told that just after we had closed down the previous night a female leopard had killed a python and dragged it in the road. We decided to head that way and see if it wasnt in a tree somewhere hopefully still with the leopard. When we got to the area we saw where the struggle happened and some blood stains on the road. We then saw tracks for the female walking away and a short distance down the road coming back again but with tracks for 2tiny cubs. We believe these are for Karula with her cubs, its the 1st signs besides her suckle marks of them and hopefully someone will get to see them soon. Unfortunately there was no leopard of any size around. We then decided to head further west where they had found a female leopard and her cub playing around. On our way there though we picked up our own tracks for a female, male and 2cubs. We decided to follow them and after some time the males tracks parted from the female and cubs. We carried on a little further and found the female with her 2 3month old cubs walking down the road, we watched them stalking her and playing around and climbing up and down the trees it was awesome!! Great start to the day!!

Regards
 Nkorho Rangers

Fingers crossed.  :ecsmile

A member of the 'Djuma Djunkies' group on FB posted asking Cheetah Plains where they saw Karula ad her cubs.

Andrew Khosa (the guide who saw them) responded with:

Quote
we find her at vuyatela that morning she was moving east in to Torchwood camp side. since the cubs are not too sure about car so i didn't get to see if was male and female yet, wihich we still sure that they around vuyatela side......

'Torchwood' is east of DPGR, but in the Djuma/Vuyatela area. So in fact Karula didn't wander too far away from home. http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=879.msg68548#msg68548 (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=879.msg68548#msg68548)

Cheetah Plains posted these two photos of our favourite female leopard (Karula) on Mar. 19. I think they may have been taken one or two days before posted. My captions are what was posted with the photos. There was no mention re cubs.

March 22 Morning = two sightings of Karula and her two cubs. No photos as yet.

First sighting was by the Nkorho Bush Lodge Rangers

Quote
22 March Morning

I have no other word to explain what a drive we had other than Awesome!! We found the 4ways pride sleeping on the road 10m from where they were last night.
After them we found 2 Buffalo bulls and about 20 Elephant all in one spot. The young bull Elephants was chasing the Buffalo all over the place.
We then Left them and came across 16 Wild Dogs playing in the road. They then ran into a block and found a female Knob Billed Duck with about 4 youngsters. It was not a good day for the Ducks as only the female got away.
We left the dogs sleeping and made our way to a spot to have coffee but the spot was taken by Salayexe and her cub posing in the sun for us. On our way back home we found Female Leopard (Karula) + her 2 Cubs. It was so awesome the see the 3 of them doing well.
 Got to Love Africa!

Kind Regards
Nkorho Rangers

AND and about 4 hours later they were seen by Cheetah Plains

Karin van der Merwe of Nkorho Bush Lodge took these photos on March 23. No mention as to whether the cub in the grass is the other cub??

La Diva de Djuma looks as beautiful as ever and her offspring look well. One maybe shy and one full of fun.  All her litters have had a shy one and a bold one.

Saturday, March 30 - what a beautiful surprise awaited my eyes when I logged onto FB.  :wub

When on a drive (on Friday) Andrew from Cheetah Plains saw 'Karula & Cs' (my abbreviation for Karula and Cubs).

Today he posted this beautiful photo of them:

And in another group on FB related to 'Leopards in Sabi Sands' two members discussed whether Mvula or male Tingana was their father, both had been seen mating with Karula.

I have numbered the photos as Andrew did.  On looking at the photos a second time I realized that Karula had obviously made a kill for the herself and the cubs.

Karula gnaws on a bone from the kill.

Friday, April 19 - Sighting from Cheetah Plains

While on a drive Andrew came across Karula and Mvula sharing a kudu dinner. Apparently Mvula had 'stolen' it earlier from Karula.  How kind of him to share the kill with the Mother of his latest children.   :ecsmile

Mvula certainly is a large leopard. It is when we see a male and female together that I am reminded of just how big the the full grown male leopards are.

You are all most welcome. I have just been looking at all the photos I have posted. The vast majority of them have been taken at Cheetah Plains.

Justin Granvill has done a superb job of taking and posting photos to keep all of Karula's gans current.   :ty

It appears that Karula and her boys are checking out the whole area  :eclol  One place today and another tomorrow. Some great photos.

Candice posted 11 photos in the DPGR timeline on FB.  I am including them as saved with my program. Two sets, the first of which you'll notice the first photo top left was included x 2.

Big decision needed  :nod2   Where to post this info for followers of 'Wildlife in Africa'.

On June 5th (not the 6th as per original posting) I will be heading away, bright and early. While I'll be home the 10th or 11th, I am unlikely to be on FB, ONZ etc. until the 14th. On my return I need to make room for a new washer / dryer and then re-organize the area.

Please post any news in the appropriate topic.  Behave - if you must   :eclol

Karula has been seen at various sites - usually mating with Mvula or male Tingana.  there ahsn't been an upated sighting of her cubs.

This morning as Candice (GM for Djuma Lodges) was heading to work she had a wonderful sighting.  No photos; but Sunday evening / night (CAT) leopard(s) were seen from the Waterhole cam.

Posted on DPGR Timeline on FB:

Quote
Happy Monday morning all!!

Its 9.30am and already I have had such an exciting morning.

On my way to work I bumped into two lions. They have been in the area for the last 3 days mating. She seemed to have had enough but he is still very much interested in her. The sounds of growls and snarls are such an exciting way to start your day.

So with a spring in my step I proceeded to begin my daily tasks and check rooms in preparation of our new guests today.

You can imagine my surprise when I heard a growl and a grunt coming from Vuyatela room 1 deck. Karula and her cubs have killed an impala about 5 meters from the deck!

All three were lying very low watching me as I walked back and forth on the deck trying to locate where the noise was coming from. Eventually Luzile ( the chef) spotted them and the kill. The two of us at a safe distance, watched them... watching us.

What an incredible Monday morning. ONLY at Djuma!

Some of you may remember when Karula and either Mixo and Induna or Xivambalana and Xivindzi were on the deck of one of the rooms.   :eclol

Karula and her latest two haven't been seen too much of late.  With all the recent sightings and 'to do' with the various lions in the area; I am sure she is making sure her two cubs are not being seen too much. A good mother is Karula.

Thandi [(Saseka), one of Karula's twin daughters from her first litter] and her male cub have been seen quite often around Nkorho. They were seen again today - no photos.

Quote
Karin van der Merwe - 8-15-13 -- Nkorho
I have not seen Thandi's cub for a while, so this afternoon when Bernhard found him close to the lodge, needless to say...all of us at the lodge were very keen to go there! What an awesome sighting of him and Thandi ...a small kill in a tree and 3 Heynas waiting around to see if they could get lucky.

I have decided that when Karula and her almost one year old sons are seen on various areas - I am placing them here as it is for 'Karula and Her New Family'.  :nod2

On Nov. 15 or 16th Sean Gilbert (Arathusa field guide) posted this photo of the boys at play; but : they were at Arathusa or ??

Elsewhere, as on Nov. 17th   they were seen with La Diva strolling doen the road by DPGR waterhole.

Thank you Barb MacL.

Regardless, it is wonderful to see them looking so strong and healthy. Now if 'someone' would name them.

From Djuma Private Game Reserve: Jan. 23, 2014 comes the news we have been waiting for since December 2013.

An exciting morning as the decision has been made and Karula's cubs have been named!!

They are not quite independent yet and will continue to stay with 'MUM' for quite some time to come, however they are venturing off on their own allot more lately and so we felt it was time.

Quarantine Male, is certainly living up to his name as he has been hanging around our quarantine area for the last 3 days. He is the more aggressive of the two males which at the moment is one of his distinct characteristics. I believe he is going to grow up to be one fierce male.

Kunyuma (one of the Tsonga meanings for ‘shy’) is definitely my favorite of the two. He has a very meek and placid nature. Kunyuma will often avoid eye contact with the vehicle and slink off to seek the safety of a branch or shrub.

I will endeavour in the next few days to try and get a close up picture of each boy, so we can... as they say.... "put a name to a face".

I am excited to see what Mother Nature has in store for these two beautiful boys..!!

Candice

As Karula and Mvula mated several times at DPGR; the cubs were named by team at DPGR.  Candice is the General Manger of the Lodges.

Update from DPGR re pronunciation of Kunyuma.  It is pronounced 'Kun-you-ma'. (The beginning part, Kun is a deep U, like Uno not like the word umbrella).

Thank you Candice and team.

These photos are from Jan. 23 / 24th of Karula and boys at the waterhole.  When leopards are seen 'playing' or 'grooming' there is likelihood of one leopard being Karula. As if you look closely one is smaller and thinner than the other.??

Today (Jan. 31, 2014) in the FB group 'Karula and Family Photos, there was discussion regarding the name 'Quarantine Male' for one of Karula's year or so old boys.

One comment and then a reply from Claire-M. Lepage (who has been watching WE cam since its inception) who knows a lot about the leopards we have seen. She is the 'go-to' person for answers.

Comment: Wish they would have found a more regal name for Karula's son. She's royalty and her cubs are always spectacular.

The part of Djuma, near Gowrie dam, called Quarantine is very important in the history of the development of Djuma as a private game reserve.

At the beginning it was fenced to give the time for the imported Blue Wildebeests to feel at home in their new environment.

For Karula also, it's an important place, it's where she met and mated with Jordaan's male (Yambilu-Jordaan) and the result was Shadow and Thandi. And Karula had to conquer Quarantine from Beacon female to become the Queen of Djumaland. Try to see Quarantine as a Duchy and Quarantine male as a Duke.

And I remember so many beautiful sunrises from my years with WE morning drives when I sat with Pieter Pretorius in the dark waiting for the first morning glows to appear and the sun appearing slowly shaping the Marula trees and sometimes a giraffe ... It's also there that we spent great moments of excitement with Somalie the beautiful one tusk elephant cow and her inquisitive calves. Many great memories are attached to Quarantine for me.

I did not know the parts that:

Hello,

Sorry to say, but I am taking a break from 'Wildlife in Africa'.  All the computer time required to enable posting the info here is further upsetting my vision.

If anyone spots/hears any major news from the cams, Facebook, or websites etc. leave a post for all to read.

So many years later, and it has been along time as Karula has had 4 litters (8 children, some now with their own children) since I first started watching.  :eclove

Well, here I am in Africa to continue the Djuma story.  I am in my second day at Arathusa Lodge just next door to Djuma.  Our first night we spent almost an hour of our night drive watching Mvula and Thandi (Karula's daughter) mating.  And we watched them again last night.  in some places people would call Thandi a not-so-nice name.  I would call her a hopeless flirt.  When we get home I will post video of the two of them.  The noises they make are amazing.

And today we saw the herd of blue wildebeest that are mentioned a post or two above!

We've also spent time with the Styx pride of lions with their three lovely cubs and seen innumerable hippos, antelope, warthogs and so on.  This is a beautiful place!

Our guide Roy knows Pieter, Marc, Tara, Patrick and Rex well.  His home village is near to Rex's.  I feel like I am with old friends after all the years of watching Djuma on WildEarth.  On tonight's drive Roy has said he will take us to the big Gowrie Dam where the camera is still broadcasting.  I don't know if our jigga will be visible on cam but what a thrill!

How many more exclamation points can I use?   !!!!!!!  I think the only thing comparable would be to go on the Hip Trip.

Hi MM,

How wonderful that you have been/still are in Africa. I had heard via Fol-di-rol that you had been on Chat and had seen Mvula and Thandi doing what animals do!!

I do envy you and have fond memories of a safari in 2008; but it didn't include Sabi Sands.

I look forward to seeing your pics/videos.

While I haven't been watching the cam I do have some photos to load at some point - mostly Feb. and march.  Finding the time to do so has been an issue, as has uploading to Flickr. Not to mention company and enjoying new people and activities in my new home.

All the best MM and enjoy the rest of your trip.
